Chapter 113
Chapter 113
When Josephine looked at Lisa, she quickly sat down obediently.
Alexandra pulled Josephine’s hand and said coquettishly. “Josephine, just trust me! I came to Highclere City because I know you’re magnanimous and open–minded! It’s not that Lisa doesn’t want to get married. She just wants to find the right person to marry”
Lisa nodded again. “Yes, yes, yes!”
Josephine glanced at Lisa. “Why do you think your parents are so anxious? If a man doesn’t get married, he’ll age like fine wine. However, if a woman doesn’t get married, the older she gets, she’ll not have any suitors. It’s best to marry when a woman is in her thirties. If not, in a few years, she’ll have to marry someone who is poor or divorced.”
Lisa scratched her ear. The words were harsh but she didn’t dare to get angry. “Grandaunt! Are you forcing me?”
Josephine raised her voice. “I’m not forcing you. I’m trying to reason with you. All of us want you to marry into a good family. Do you really want to marry an old man who is divorced or widowed with a child?”
Lisa was upset and raised her voice. “Marry an old man? My ultimate dream is to become a rich cougar and hook up with a handsome man to be my husband!”
Josephine was stunned for a moment before she turned to Alexandra and asked, “Cougar?”
Lisa could not take it anymore.
Alexandra explained obediently, “A cougar is a term used to describe an older woman who has a younger boyfriend.”
“Oh!” After hearing the explanation, Josephine turned around and stared at Lisa. “I think your plan to become a rich woman is easier to fulfill.”
Seeing that Josephine was not convinced that she would succeed, Lisa stood up straight and said, “Grandaunt, please wait and see! I’m a woman of my word!”
Josephine smiled calmly. After all, she doted on these children.
She replied calmly, “I’ll give you half a year. If you can really find a younger man you like in Highclere City, I’ll help you reject the marriage that your parents have arranged.”
Lisa stared at the old lady in disbelief for a full three seconds. “Are you serious?”
Josephine glanced at her arrogantly. “My parents and grandparents loved me the most in the Abbotwell family. My brothers always listened to me and let me have my way!”
“Grandaunt, I love you so much!”
Lisa immediately rushed forward and hugged the old lady, almost hurting her waist.
Alexandra became worried for Josephine and quickly pushed Lisa away. “Lisa, let go! You are hurting Josephine!”
Lisa happily sat on the other side of the couch and looked at Alexandra who was checking if Josephine was okay. The expression of concern on her face was genuine and impossible to fake.
Thinking of Alexandra and Julian’s fake marriage, Lisa clicked her tongue a few times.
When he got home from work, Julian opened the door with his key. Before he walked in, he heard lively sounds coming from the living room. It was unusual.
He took a look inside and realized what was going on.
He changed his shoes and walked in. The living room fell silent.
Josephine was the first to speak. She asked, “Julian, were you the one who stopped Liz from visiting me? Did you also ask Alexandra to hide the fact that Liz is in Highclere City?”
Lisa winked at Julian.
Alexandra, on the other hand, felt guilty and lowered her head without saying a word.
Julian knewmmediately that he had become the scapegoat.
He knew that Josephine must have seen Lisa earlier. Hence, Lisa had to push the blame onto him to prevent Josephine from reprimanding her.
Alexandra must have also done the same.
He threw a glance at Alexandra and walked over with a smile. “Grams, I’m just afraid that you’ll worry. Lisa has found a job and a place to stay in Highclere City. Nothing is too difficult for her.”
Julian had tacitly acknowledged that he was the one who told Lisa and Alexandra not to mention anything about Lisa being in Highclere City.
Alexandra rolled her eyes and looked up.
Josephine said in a more serious tone, “In the future, you’re not allowed to hide such things from me! Do you understand? No matter what happens, as long as it’s related to family, you have to let me know!”

“Yes, Grams,” Julian answered as he nodded.
Feeling satisfied, Josephine nodded and said, “Alright, it’s time to prepare dinner. Liz is having dinner here too.”
The family chef nodded and said, “Yes.”
Then, she went to prepare dinner.
After dinner, Lisa took a taxi and left.
Before she left, she promised Josephine that she would visit her often at the Ranford Mansion. Josephine also promised Lisa that as long as she worked hard in Highclere City, Josephine would help her deal with her family in Culver City.
That night, Alexandra took a shower early and climbed into bed. She sent Lisa a message on WhatsApp to ask if she reached home.
Julian pushed the door open and walked in. He saw Alexandra sitting on the bed.
She looked at him and felt that he had something to tell her.
“What’s wrong, Mr. Ranford?” Alexandra asked.
Julian didn’t hesitate and asked directly, “Grandma told you this morning, right? She wants you to go for a medical checkup.”
Alexandra nodded. “Yes, she did. She insisted that I go for the checkup. Actually, I don’t think it’s necessary. Mr. Ranford, if you think it’s troublesome, you can help me to talk to…
Julian could tell that she was overthinking, so he interrupted her gently. “I want to say that I’ve already contacted the doctor. The appointment is tomorrow morning.”
“Oh! What do I need to prepare?” Alexandra blinked her eyes and looked at him.
Julian replied, “There’s no need to do anything.”
Alexandra said, “Okay. Mr. Ranford, give me the address and the doctor’s contact information. I’ll go on time.”
Julian said, “I’ll go with you.”
Alexandra stopped talking. She looked at Julian feeling puzzled and asked, “Don’t you have to go to work tomorrow? It’s just a medical checkup. I can go by myself. It’s not a big problem!”
Alexandra felt extremely embarrassed. She wondered why Julian wanted to accompany her for a checkup regarding her menstrual cramps.
“Grams will feel more relieved after you go for the check–up,” Julian said.
Alexandra said, “Actually there’s nothing to check. Which girl doesn’t have menstrual cramps?”
As Alexandra spoke, she lowered her head. She felt embarrassed to talk about menstrual cramps with a man.
However, Alexandra was very touched that Josephine was so concerned about her health.
She even asked Julian to accompany Alexandra for the checkup.
However, Julian gazed deeply at this lovable and bright girl in front of him. He really wanted to know what illness she had.
Ten minutes ago, Derek called Julian to inform him that he had helped Julian arrange an appointment with a foreign expert in the neurology
department.
The foreign expert happened to be in the country these few days.
He was Derek Sloane’s teacher when he was studying abroad. Derek quickly booked a plane ticket for him to fly to Highclere City.
The foreign expert would arrive in Highclere City early the next morning.
He would stay in Highclere City for a day tomorrow.
Julian also booked a comprehensive full–body physical examination for Alexandra.
He wanted to find out what was wrong with her.
Since Alexandra didn’t reveal anything, Julian would find out for himself.
Julian stared at Alexandra’s shy expression and said in a gentle tone, “Rest early. Since I’m not busy tomorrow, I’ll accompany you to the hospital.”
Alexandra stared at Julian.
For a moment, she was speechless.
She had mixed feelings.
Alexandra wondered why Julian was treating her so nicely.
