Chapter 77
Calmness after the storm
“How could you both give up the most important battle of your lives…. for…. for a wolf–less omega! You must be insane.” Harlow raged and paced the living room in the Alpha castle.
“It wasn’t about Gabbie,” Alex said.
“Yeah,” Kade grunted.
He lay on the couch with his feet up nursing his cracked ribs.
“Then let us in on the secret?” Leiah scoffed.
“Clearly, they were frightened of meeting me in the final and decided to give up at the last minute. Who can’t blame them?” Gareth said reclining in a chair with a fat grin.
“You’re too cocky for your own good,” Harlow spat. “You’ll eat those words when my jaws around your neck.”
Gareth smirked. “We’ll see about that, Precious.”
Harlow shot the rest of us dangerous glares before storming out.
“Is anyone going to spill the beans?” Leiah scowled.
Kade rubbed my thigh as while I stroked his hair.
“No, secret. I saw an opportunity and I took it. I thought being Alpha King was all I wanted but that changed.”
All eyes turned to Alex.
He rolled his eyes and groaned. “I should have finished him off but… Kade would have killed me but he didn’t. I owed him one now we’re even.” He stood from the couch and gingerly walked upstairs.
“Why don’t I believe him?” Leiah asked.
“He’s scared of me,” Gareth smiled proudly.
Leiah and Gareth left us in the solace of the chilly living room. Kade and I sat in comfortable silence for hours. I couldn’t find the right words to say to break the silence though I could sit with Kade stroking my hair for another few hours.
“What do we do now?” I asked.
I didn’t mean what did we do in the moment. Battle season was over for Kade and my secret was out to Kade’s Father. How long would it be before the whole school knew a Hunter was in the school? I cringed thinking about the riot that would take place.

“Star gaze?” Kade asked.
“You know what I mean.
He chuckled. “Technically, I’ve graduated. I won’t be here when the Academy opens up again.”
“That’s great… that means you’re going home to learn the ropes of being Alpha?”
Kade stroked my cheek. “Yeah, if I go back.”
“What do you mean if?” I sat up straight.
“You can I could run away together. Find a place that’s just for us.” He bumped his nose against mine.
He was going to give up being Alpha for me? It was his birth right I couldn’t let him do that.
“Gabbie hear me out-
“I can’t let you do that, babe.”
“What do you want to do, breakup?” He demanded.
“No, but you were born to be an Alpha. I shouldn’t have been born.”
I stood abruptly.
“Don’t say that” Kade stood too but winced from the pain of his bruises.
“It’s my choice and I choose you.”
“You’re naïve if you think your Dad’s going to let us be together. He’s going to come after me just like he went after my Mom.”
“I’m sorry Gabbie.”
I shook my head. I hadn’t meant to throw that in Kade’s face but it was a possibility.
“You know Hunters and wolves shouldn’t mix.”
“I don’t give a damn. There’s a mate mark on your neck that says you’re mine. The moon goddess imprinted your scent in my heart and that’s fucking good enough for me.” His voice rose about the ceiling and echoed in the sleeping castle.
I wanted all the obstacles to disappear. I remained silent and stared at the ground. I wasn’t powerful, I wasn’t rich, I didn’t even have a home outside this school. I’m the one who didn’t deserve him.
“Gabbie, say something!
“I don’t know what to say,” I sniffled, “I think we should talk in the morning. Please rethink your decision.”
I turned around, arms wrapped around myself and walked off.

“You’re not spending the night?” Kade asked.
I turned. “I shouldn’t… I’ll see you tomorrow, okay?”
His shoulders slumped. He brushed my question off. understood. I pissed him off. I walked out into the cold bitter air. I sucked in the tears. I wasn’t going to cry. I’d been strong since I got here and I was going to be strong until I left this place.
“You really shouldn’t argue in a castle full of shifters.” Harlow’s serpent voice slithered out of the
darkness.
“I’m not in the mood,” I said and kept on walking.
She laughed. I scowled and marched on.
She used her super speed and appeared in front of me.
“Don’t walk away when I’m talking to you, freak.”
She’shoved my shoulder.
“I know what you are. What’s a Hunter doing in a school for shifters?”
My mouth became dry.
“I always knew there was something wrong with you. Imagine how all the omegas will feel when they realize they’ve been sleeping in the same room as a Hunter. Monster!”
“I’m not a monster,” I stammered.
“You’re a Hunter it’s the same thing. Did you come to kill Kade? Who sent you?” She prowled towards
- me.
“No–no one. I just found out.”
“You must think I’m an idiot.”
I bit my tongue. Harlow was in kill mode. Her eyes turned bright yellow and her nails sharpened themselves to a point.
“No one’s going to question me for killing a Hunter. Il be praised. You took us all for fools, Gabriella Chambers.”
I searched my surroundings for a weapon. Nothing on the gravel. The gym was too far to run. My only option was to use her body against her but combat with Harlow wasn’t appealing. She was fast but with her arms spread out it would take her a second to attack me after I bashed her cars.
Irisked a life threatening scratch but it would give me enough time to run to safety. I positioned myself to attack when I saw blazing red eyes from hell appear behind her. The midnight black wolf came toward us like a train without breaks.
“Harlow run!”

“What?”
I shoved her to the right and the wolf went right through us.
She growled but froze when she realized we were under her attack.
“Get out of here! It wants me.”
“Why?” She demanded.
Now isn’t the time to get into details. The wolf snapped its jaws and locked its gaze on me.
“There’s no time to explain just get out of here.”
“In that case” Harlow got up.
I took a step back, keeping my attention locked on the wolf. Now would be a great time for back up.
Harlow locked my arms from behind and pinned me in place. I was too busy watching the wolf to notice her pounce.
“Come and get her you, beast.” She jerked me forward. “Here she is!”
The wolf howled and darted forward.
“What are you doing!” I wiggled but her grip was death tight.
“Gabbie!” Dad yelled and groaned. “Get the nose!”
I raised my foot and slammed it hard on the wolf as it opened its jaw to bite me. The wolf howled and stumbled backwards.
“Now use your opponent’s weight against you!”
“I wouldn’t-”
I stomped on her foot. She raised her foot and cried out. I took advantage of her off balance and. flipped her over my back. She landed on her bum and stared wide eyed at me.
Dad staggered, clutching his bloodied shirt. Before I could ask what happened he held out a medium. knife.
“Finish this. Only you can kill it.”
Harlow growled her eyes changing colour again. Dad pulled out his knife and pointed it at her forehead.
“Not a move.” She froze.
The wolf got to its feet and locked eyes with me again. Could I really kill my own wolf? What if it was redeemable? What if I could save it? Pondering these things as the wolf ran at me was a bad idea. My Dad’s yells barely penetrated it was only when my mate yelled…

“Cabbie, move!”
It was too late the wolfidug its paws into my chest and set me to the ground. The knife went through its thin fur. The wolf whimpered. There was no saving it now. I officially had no wolf. I twisted the knife.
The wolf was gone.
