Chapter 38
Fire Burris
I almost forgot we had an attic. Searching for anything up there in a house without power at night wasn’t wise. Kade and I shackled up there going through boxes many of which needed to be tossed out. The roof had a leak which damaged most of the cardboard.
I watched Kade sit on a rickery camp chair that was hanging on for dear life. He pulled out the damaged file after the damaged file. He slapped the next file on the ground and leaned back on the chair I cracked a smile and went back to the pictures in my hand. I tilted my head at the next one. Most of them were photos of Mom and I but the one I held was of a man with green eyes identical to mine beside him stood a man I knew from town.
“Kade. I know this man next to my Dad
“Yeah?**
“He owns a hardware store in town. I mean I hope he hasn’t skipped town either.
Want to head over there?”
I sucked my bottom lip. What if I didn’t like what I found out? I wouldn’t know until I found out. I slipped into the passenger seat of Kade’s truck. It smelt of meat and his cologne.
He said he wasn’t mad at me anymore but the way his body tensed when I slipped into the car told me something else. I knew he was driving but he didn’t look at me once. What if he was disgusted with me? I apologized but he told me to stop it. I sucked in the urge to apologize again and stared out the window as we pulled into a fast–food restaurant.
“Kade”
He popped out of the car. “I’ll be back.” He mumbled.
“Great” I watched as Kade walked into the restaurant What if I screwed things up? Alpha males weren’t known for sharing. Kade would definitely pick a fight when he went back. Worse, what if he dumped me? In the world’s view, I already wasn’t worthy of him. No one would blame him if he left me.
He was going back to McGregor Academy anyway. Back where Harlow was and Leiah. With me gone she would try to get back by his side if she was already throwing herself at him then she could easily find a way to get back together with him. Kade’s Dad opposed our relationship he would support Harlow. What did I expect from a Sanders wolf anyway? Anything less than an Alpha female wasn’t good enough as an Alpha’s mate.
The door slammed. I startled and sniffled. I didn’t hear him come back.
Kade raised his brow at me. “You okay?” He asked handing me a burger.
“Yeah.”
“Gabbie I was gone for five minutes.”

“Come inside quickly,” he said.
Kade and I piled into the small store. The walls had been stripped and the counters were empty.
“You’re moving too?” I asked.
Jack shrugged, “The pack’s served its purpose.
“What was that?”
“Being a good hiding spot.”
“Is that why Mom ran? She was hiding? Is my Dad in hiding?” My heart swelled with hope of my father being alive, but I had to squash it. Why wouldn’t he try to contact me or his wife?
Jack removed his hat and twisted it before taking Kade in.
“Sanders pack?” he pointed at my mate.
“How’d you know?” I asked.
“They have a certain smell” He chuckled.
Kade folded his arms but kept his cool.
“I was under the impression you didn’t get your wolf when you left for that school.”
“Doesn’t matter. Know where her Mom is or not?” Kade snapped.
th
“Your Mom your Mom has always been on the run. My guess is she took advantage of you being safe at that school and took off. Jack looked between us.
“So she abandoned me,” I grumbled.
“Gabbie got anything to worry about?” Kade asked.
“If you ask me Gabbie’s the safest one of all of us.”
“Safe from what?”
Jack met Kade’s eyes for a second.
“You should leave,”“”
“Wait, where’s my Mom? What are you running from?”
Kade took my hand and turned me around.
“Let’s get you home.”
“I need answers.”

Kade bought us Chinese food then we drove back to my dark house. I got all the torches before night
fell on us. We huddled in my room as the sunset outside.
“Why’d you think Jack held back like that?” I asked Kade.
“Some things are better left buried,”
“These are my parents we’re talking about here. He made them sound like fugitives.”
“I wish I could protect you from this Gabbic.”
“There’s no protecting me. I can handle myself, Kade
He sat up and cupped my cheeks. “I know that, but I need to protect you. My wolf can’t stand the thought of you being in danger.
“I don’t have anyone else I have to find my Mom I already lost my Dad.”
Come on, you have me. I want you. I need you, Gabbie.”
Heat rushed to my face. The white light in the room was bright enough for Kade to see the blush scattered on my nose.
“I want you badly.”
“Well we are alone here in my bedroom.” I stuttered and looked at my folded legs.
He chuckled as he caressed my bottom lip. “Yeah, we are alone.”
So you want to?”
“Only if you to.”
My heart slammed forward. I thought about this moment so many night before bed. Sometimes I was confident before it happened other times I was as small as a mouse. I didn’t imagine being this shy and as hot as a sauna.
“I do”
