Chapter 45
Saturday was meant to be a day off and that was exactly what I had planned to do today. That was until Mark woke Elijah and I up at 7am to tell us that there was an emergency in the pack. Apparently one of the women I went to school with had been blessed with two mates. Although it was actually turning into more of a curse because her mates were rivals.
Last night there had been some kind of altercation and Mark needed Elijah's help to get the girl's mates to come to some kind of agreement. He thought that he was going to be gone for most of the day so I made myself a coffee and a bagel and took them into the office. There were still so many books for me to get through, maybe I should be grateful for the extra time.
'You keep telling yourself that, maybe you might even be able to convince yourself but you won't fool me.' Onyx said, laughing at me.
That was because she knew how much I had been looking forward to today. Elijah was meant to be taking me out on a date and we were meant to spend the whole day together. Elijah had wanted to make today special and romantic for us, I didn't really care about the romance part but I was looking forward to being alone with him. Something we didn't seem to get to do often enough at the moment. I was sure that it would get better once we took care of the Arthur situation but I didn't want to wait.
The books were organised on the desk in front of me. I spent some time skimming through the books until I found two books that looked promising. They both seemed to give information about the connection I shared to other wolves and I wanted to try to get through both of them before Elijah came home.
Trying to push everything else out of my head, I started reading the first of the books. Pretty soon my head was pounding from all the information that I was trying to shove into it. I really needed a break, I rested my elbows on the desk in front of me and rubbed my temples with my thumbs.
"It looks like you might need this." Ryker was standing in the doorway to mine and Elijah's office. He had a coffee cup in one hand, it smelt like a latte with hazelnut syrup, my favourite. He was smiling at me, as though he had just won some kind of prize, making me worry about his motives.
"You probably shouldn't be here right now, Elijah isn't here." I replied. I didn't want Elijah to end up killing Ryker over some kind of misunderstanding.
"I love you Diana but I am not going to put you in a compromising position. Let me help you with your research, I will sit at the other desk." Ryker was pointing at the desk which Elijah had put in the room for me but I was yet to use. He wouldn't be able to touch me from there, I couldn't see how Elijah would have a problem with that.
"Fine, you can stay," I conceded. Ryker brought me my coffee then took the other book and started reading it at my desk.
When he had suggested this arrangement I was worried that it was just an excuse to get close to me. That he would keep distracting me by trying to talk to me but he didn't. We both read our books in almost silence until Ava and Felix came into the room bearing lunch.
"Did you manage to find anything?" Ava asked as she placed the plate of food in front of me.
I shook my head. The book that I was reading gave me lots of information on how to use my skills to enhance my connection with other wolves and use that to locate them. That might prove useful for locating Arthur in the future but I was sure that he would notice the intrusion. I couldn't risk doing that until I could block him out effectively.
"I might have found something." Ryker replied, without even looking up from the book. He stood up from the desk and brought the book over to me, placing it carefully over the book I was reading. I didn't have to read much to realise that Ryker was onto something. There was a way to temporarily close off connections to other wolves.
It sounded as though this was used during some kind of war, where hex wolves were fighting other hex wolves and trying to hide their tactics from each other. It involved finding the connection to that other wolf, isolating it by concentrating on that connection, then thinking about unravelling it and severing it. The book indicated that the connection would slowly reform over the next few days. I would have to remember to continually cut the connection but at least I wouldn't have to deal with anymore dreams.

"That should work, thank-you." Ryker smiled at my praise but my mind was already wandering. I was nervous about focusing on my connection to Arthur but it looked like that was how I was going to stop him from entering my dreams again. 'You can't let him do that again, who's to says he will stop at a kiss next time he invades our dreams,' Onyx growled. Her words cemented my decision.
"I'm going to give it a try," I declared.
"Are you sure that is a good idea? Maybe you should wait for Elijah to get back." Ava suggested.
"No, it will only make him worry unnecessarily." I replied, it was only a half lie. That was one of my reasons, the other was that I didn't want to lose my nerve.
All three of them watched me as I closed my eyes and concentrated on the connections I had to the wolves around me. I could sense my connections to every wolf in the house but my connection to the three wolves in this room was much stronger. I guessed that it had something to do with how well I knew them but I couldn't be sure.
Outside of the house, I could feel my connections to other members of our pack. I could also feel my connection to Elijah, my connection to him was so strong that it overshadowed all the other connections. Casting my gaze outside of our pack, there were so many connections. It was almost like being lost at sea, there were so many that I didn't even know how to start looking for Arthur.
'Look for connections that are stronger than the others. He has been entering our dreams which means he will have had to strengthen the connection betweens us,' Onyx suggested.
Following my wolf's suggestion I quickly scanned the connections for any that were stronger than the others. I only found two that looked to be substantially stronger than the others and both of them were close together, pretty far out of my pack's territory.
When I focused on the first of these connections, following it back to its source it quickly became clear that it was the link I shared with Arthur. The moment I started investigating it I could feel something change about it, like he was aware of my intrusion. I had to work quickly.
At first nothing seemed to be happening as I concentrated on trying to unravel the connection, but after a few seconds it started to unwind. A few seconds after I felt it snap completely, if Arthur wasn't aware of what I was doing before then he certainly would be now.
There wasn't much I could do about it now other than hope that he wasn't going to retaliate in some awful way. I put those thoughts out of my mind, and turned my attention towards the second connection. I had to know who it was that was in Arthur's territory, had someone betrayed us? As I followed the connection back towards its source, my mouth dropped open in shock.
"My mom! She's alive!"
