Chapter 44
The light was starting to fade around me but I wanted to get a few minutes more research in before dinner was ready. I had already been here for hours, so long that my muscles were starting to go numb. Elijah thought my enthusiasm for research was great at first but I think he was starting to get sick of it. had already fallen asleep at his desk. He was snoring softly with his head resting on his arm.
I felt a little guilty for making him work so hard but I needed to find a way to block Arthur out of my dreams. For the first couple of days after my most recent dream I was hopeful for an easy solution but now my optimism was wavering. I had found nothing of use in these books so far.
There was so much information in these books. That wasn't the problem, the problem was finding that information. There didn't seem to be any kind of key or system behind what each book contained. So far I had skimmed through one book on the history of my subspecies of werewolf, one diary and a book about using our skill to unlock magic. That book was interesting but it didn't really help me solve my current issue.
My patience was dwindling and I was getting very tired. If I didn't find a book that helped me soon I would be in trouble. I haven't been able to get a full night's sleep for fear of what my dreams might hold but now it is starting to show. I wrote a brief description of the contents of the book on a sticky note and placed it on the first page before dropping the book on the floor beside me.
The sound of the heavy book landing on the books beneath it disrupted Elijah. He mumbled slightly then moved so that his head was resting on my shoulder. It would be very difficult for me to get anything done with him resting on me like this. Even so, I didn't want to move him. He was coping with the reduced sleep much worse than I was, he needed all the rest he could get.
"Dinner's ready." Helen was standing in the doorway to our office. She had a broad smile on her face. She would be travelling around to see a few of our allie's packs over the weekend. She was really hoping to meet her second chance mate, she was excited but she was trying to keep her excitement contained. Something that didn't seem to come naturally to her.
"Oh, we will be there in a few minutes," I replied.
"I was actually wondering if I could ask you something." Helen started walking towards Elijah and I without waiting for my response. I wanted to turn her away so Elijah could get a few minutes of extra rest but there was something about her face that made me pause.
"I was wondering if you could tell me what happens in a normal pack when two mates meet?" She asked. I frowned at her, not really understanding what she meant. Was her pack really that different to ours? "What do you mean by a normal pack?" I asked, raising one eyebrow.
"Mates aren't really a thing in our pack. If two omegas are mated together then they are allowed to accept each other. Everyone else has to take a chosen mate for the benefit of the pack." That was a surprise, I didn't know there were any packs that still did that kind of thing. I thought arranged matings between ranked members of different packs stopped during my great grandparents time. As for the unranked pack members, I had never heard of them being forced into any such arrangement.
"Well normally mates accept each other immediately and get straight onto the mating part." I replied. There were of course some exceptions, ranked members are more likely to want to take things slowly and get to know their mates first. I didn't know if I should tell her that, it might just make her more nervous. It wasn't like she was going to have as rocky of a first encounter as I did with Elijah. Oh my goddess, that was a complete mess.
"What is it?" Helen asked. I hadn't even noticed but I was giggling away to myself.
"Elijah and I had a bit of a misunderstanding when we first met." I could laugh about our first meeting now but it could have gone much worse. If I hadn't been distracted, my fiery temper could have led me to reject Elijah. Heck, if he hadn't been so determined then he could have given up on me. I was so close to losing him, I hadn't even thought about that till now.
"Misunderstanding? Is that what you call it when you read someone's mind and hear something you don't like?" Elijah asked. He was still waking up, his voice was husky as slightly slurred as he gave away my secret. I was worried about her knowing my secret but I couldn't be angry with him. I don't think that he was even awake enough to realise what he was saying.

"Wait a moment, are you a hex wolf?" Helen's whole face lit up in excitement. There goes the hope that she wouldn't notice Elijah's slip up. I had to hope that this wasn't going to come back to bite us in the ass at some point in the future. "A what?" I asked, trying to claim ignorance.
"A hex wolf. My uncle told me about them. They used to live all over this region but apparently there are only a few of them left now." She replied, it looks as though Helen knew more about my history than I did. I hadn't heard the name hex wolf before, maybe it was some kind of nickname. If it was, it was clearly one that the people who wrote the books I had been reading didn't like very much. I hadn't seen that name once in anything I had read so far.
"My uncle told me that hex wolves got their power from interbreeding with strong witches over many generations. That is why they can control minds and perform magic." She seemed to be enjoying telling me about myself. Maybe she knew something else, something that could help me with Arthur.
"Did your uncle say anything about how to stop a hex wolf from getting into your mind?" I asked.
"You don't like her being able to read your mind?" Helen asked, directing her attention to Elijah. He smiled at me and kissed my cheek.
"I have nothing to hide from her but there is a hex wolf who is causing us issues at the moment." He replied.

I had to love his optimism, even if it was misplaced. Even if he loved me completely it wasn't possible to have positive feelings about someone one hundred percent of the time. That would go against human nature.
"There is another hex wolf around here." Helen squealed. She was bouncing in place, she was so excited. At least someone was enjoying my situation because I certainly wasn't, I would be very happy if I could wipe Arthur out of existence. 'Let me do it,' Onyx growled. Arthur was somehow able to block my wolf while he invaded my dreams. That was enough to make her hate him completely. She wouldn't be happy till our claws were coated in his blood.
"If they are invading your mind then there is nothing you can do but Diana should be able to block them out." My relief was almost instant at Helen's words. Even though I was still clueless on how to block him out of my mind, just knowing it was possible gave me hope.
"You wouldn't happen to know how to do that would you?" It was a long shot but I had to ask.
Helen responded by shaking her head before walking out of the room. Oh well, it was worth a try. At least now I would be able to enjoy dinner, knowing that I was one step closer to finding a way of blocking Arthur out of my life forever.
