(Book 2) – Chapter 40
We made it over to them with only having to take on one vampire. I had linked the rest of the guys to see how many they had taken out. We had about three or four left that was unaccounted for but they did catch one. Leif took him down to the cells to keep watch while we take out the last remaining witch.
“Ok. So what is the plan? I can see a bit a barrier put around her but is it protecting her, keeping her in it, or is it helping contain the magic?” It was like all the different color variations of purple swirling together in a circle around the witch.
“No plan yet. I need to know what spell she is casting. I am going to get closer. Once I know the spell I can do the opposite one to stop it and once she gets really upset the barrier will fall. That is your moment to take her out.” Melissa looked at us before nodding and slowly walking to the next tree and then the next using them to hide her body.
I felt Alistair’s body tense beside me as we watched her. “This is the part I hate. I need her safe and within reach of me. I hate that she does these dangerous things even if it is to save hundreds of people. We need to have a chat at some point about how much involvement she will have.” He whispered.
“How do you think she feels when you do the exact same thing? Or is it different because she is female? A witch? Your mate? And I am pretty sure if I mentioned to her you want to limit her involvement in anything she would have your balls in her purse in a heartbeat.” I whispered back. There wasn’t any heat to my words because I wasn’t upset. He just needed to know some facts and ask himself some real questions.
“Damn you women! This will be your mates and I have grey hair in a years time.” He growled before sneaking forward to follow Melissa.
I laughed and waited before following. Melissa had finally stopped and was listening to the chant the witch was using. I just hoped it wasn’t like a zombie chant for the vampires to rise again. Then they would be double dead and I didn’t know if that was a thing. Did that make them slower? Harder or easier to kill? And what would that do their bodies?
“RYDER!” Melissa whisper yelled at me bringing me back to earth from my daydreaming of double dead vampire zombies.
“Sorry. Did you figure it out?” I asked her as I snuck up to the tree she was hiding behind.
“Yes and it is bad. She is using a spell to bring all the wolves out of their hiding spots. I can see some ingredients for a binding spell that will have her sucking all their power and magic out of their bodies and into hers. I have one counter spell I can use but I need more power.” She looked at me and I already knew what she was going to ask. I nodded my head at her.
“Just tell me what I need to do.”
“I am going to take some of your power. I will have to cut your hand and mix your b***d with mine.”
“Ok. Let’s do this.” I pulled my knife from my pocket to give to her. “Alistair make sure you keep a good eye out while we do this.
This all has to work. I made this pack a promise I am going to keep.” He nodded.
Melissa grabbed my hand palm side up and sliced down the middle with my knife. After watching all the shows with werewolves and how they did this all the time to join a pack and such I figured it wouldn’t hurt that bad. They are full of s**t. It hurt like a b***h. I saw the b***d start coming out as Melissa cut her own hand and grabbing mine with hers. She squeezed tight so our b***d mixed and when she started chanting I felt my power leaving my body. My magic tried to fight even when I tried to tell it that it was our friend who needed it. The more she took, the more it fought, and the worse it hurt. Thank gosh it was only a minute or two before she let go.
I looked around the tree at the witch and nodded at Melissa sot start her spell. Once she began I saw the barrier flicker and the witch pushing more power into her spell. Melissa did the same with her spell and the barrier started turned translucent. Just a bit more and it would be down. I nodded at Alistair as I ran a tree to tree as quiet as possible so we could come at her from two directions.
“NOW!” Melissa yelled. She had fallen to her knees pushing as much power as she could toward the witch and the shield.
Later I would be telling her she is the definition of a bad a*s female but right now I was running toward the witch. She had stood up looking around before seeing Alistair running straight at her. I could see the sweat lining her face from her exerting her power. She started speaking using some kind of spell that slowed Alistair down before trying to switch to another spell. She didn’t have the time to even get it started when I was right behind her. I grabbed her neck and snaped it. Her body fell to the ground heavily and the spell she had on Alistair was gone. He fell on his hands and knees breathing like the just ran two ten mile runs back-to-back.
“We have to burn her body and then bury the ashes. With how powerful she was I think we need to do it fast.” I told Melissa and Alistair. They nodded. Alistair and I shifted to start digging holes all over the grounds while Melissa burned the witches body.
‘All witches are dead. All vampires dead?” I linked the guys.
‘Yes. All dead and no one was killed on our end. A few injuries but nothing anyone could die from.’ Asher responded.
‘Good job. Make sure everyone is out of the shelter and ask the omegas to cook something for everyone before they head to bed. It will be a late morning for everyone who isn’t on patrol. I want patrol doubled everywhere for now. We will be back soon. Dealing with the witch’s body.’ Blue had enough energy to yip a few times before laying down. Lucky, that is what I wanted to do.
I shifted back to check on Melissa. I knew it was hard on her to hurt others of her kind but she knew they were on the wrong side. I hated killing any species especially since I knew we could all work together and be equal if we weren’t such a scared of the unknown society.
“What did you do with the other witch’s body? Please tell me you at least burned it!” I asked Melissa.
She huffed at me like I was being a bit too bossy. “Yes, Ryder. I burned it. We just need to bury her ashes.”
“I am sorry if that came across shitty. I just need this to all stay working our favor. I am here for you and I am thankful you are on this journey with us. You’re my girl.” We smiled at each other. I was about to turn around when a thought came to mind. “Did you salt her ashes? We need salt!”
‘We need a s**t ton of salt brought to us and two of you to go with Melissa to salt the other witch before burying her asses. Go as fast as you can!’ I panicked a bit in the link and I knew they all caught on to that.
‘On our way.’ Andrew responded.
