Chapter 8
Chapter 8 Secret Investigation
“Grandpa—”
Maurice gave Phoebe a look. Phoebe knew her grandfather’s temper, so she didn’t dare resist any further.
She pouted and said, “Fine.”
Rebecca raised an eyebrow in surprise. She didn’t expect Maurice to have such integrity.
When Phoebe passed by Rebecca, she glared at the latter.
Maurice glanced at Rebecca. “I’ve pampered Phoebe too much. Don’t take it to heart, Rebecca. Stay here and take good care of Levi in the future, and we won’t mistreat you.”
“I will, Grandpa.”
Maurice smiled blissfully when he heard Rebecca addressing him as ‘Grandpa’.
“Go back and rest, then.”
Rebecca nodded, then turned around and went upstairs. Just then, her phone rang. She took a glance and saw that it was a call from Cameron.
She looked around her. After making sure that no one was around, she dashed into the study.
“Didn’t I tell you that I’m in a tricky situation right now? I told you not to call me unless it’s something important.”
Lest she got into trouble, she didn’t want to reveal her identity just yet.
“Boss, it is something important. Charles just called and said that someone is investigating you.”
Rebecca’s eyelashes quivered as the light shimmered in her eyes. She could already guess who it was.
“It’s Levi Foley.”
“Levi Foley? Isn’t that your current husband? Why is he investigating you?”
What the hell? Cameron had never seen a husband treat his wife like that. They were already married, so why would Levi investigate his wife like that? However, the name sounded familiar for some reason.
After a quick check, Cameron let out a startled shout.
“Damn it, boss, your husband is amazing. He began managing the company at 20, and he even monopolized the entire economy of Yoreco. He’s now the boss of the industry, and just one word from him will send ripples throughout the economy in all of Yoreco. He’s a good match for you. However, it’s a pity that he got into an accident last year. He’s rarely handled company matters since then, but no one dares to challenge his firm reputation in Yoreco.”
“Save the nonsense and tell me the important points. I don’t have much time!”
Rebecca interrupted Cameron impatiently.
“Um, well, shall we make it impossible for him to find any information on you?”
“You can’t make it entirely impossible, or he’d get suspicious. However, he mustn’t find out everything. I suppose letting him know I’m somewhat skilled in medicine is fine. At least that will help me in the future.”
Levi must have risen to his current position because of his cautious attitude. In less than half an hour, he was already suspecting her identity.
She had to be careful while staying at the Foley Residence.
“Got it. By the way, there’s a project the company can invest in. I’ve already sent it to your inbox, so you can have a look later, Boss.”
“Just deal with it as you see fit. I may not be online too often these days.”
“Got it. I’m hanging up now.”
Rebecca deleted the call records, then dashed out of the study.
After dinner, she brought the traditional medicine she had prepared into Levi’s room.
The unpleasant smell invaded Levi’s nostrils, and he couldn’t help but frown.
“What’s that? It stinks!”
“I prepared this medicinal drink for you. Once you finish it, I’ll perform acupuncture on you again. We’ll see how things turn out in two days.”
Levi never expected this woman to be so dedicated to treating him. He asked instinctively, “What’s your objective for trying so hard to cure me?”
Rebecca wasn’t surprised by the question at all. She placed the medicine on the bedside table and answered smoothly, “You’re my husband now. When your legs are cured, I won’t have to watch over you every day, and it’ll also make matters much easier.”
“Matters, eh…” Rebecca had even considered that aspect, and Levi’s lips curved slightly.
“Please cooperate with me.” Rebecca crouched on the floor and took out some silver needles. She disinfected them, then placed them neatly. Her movements were skilled and natural.
Levi glanced at the bowl of medicine on the bedside table. He picked it up and threw his head back, downing all the medicine in one go. He frowned deeply, and his face darkened.
The taste was indescribable.
When Rebecca stood up and saw his expression, she took out a piece of candy and bent over, popping it into his mouth.
Fragrant sweetness spread within Levi’s mouth as the bitter taste faded away. Levi’s frown smoothed out.
Rebecca asked, “Is it still bitter?”
Levi glanced at her. “Did you prepare this beforehand?”
“No, it’s just a habit of mine.” When Rebecca’s grandmother was sick, she hated taking traditional medicine the most. Ever since then, Rebecca would always put some candies in her bag. Whenever she was down, she would feel much better when she ate some candy.
“Well, it’s quite sweet.”
“I’ll be performing acupuncture now.” Rebecca took a needle and got ready to pierce the first acupoint.
Just then, the door to the room was suddenly pushed open. Phoebe dashed forward and snatched the silver needle from Rebecca’s hand, then shoved her onto the floor.
“You vicious woman, how dare you try to murder Levi with these needles?!”
