Chapter 3
Chapter 3 Last-Ditch Effort
Levi, who was on the bed, never thought that the woman would dare to speak to Jacob like that.
Everyone in the Foley Family knew that Jacob had been serving Maurice since his youth.
Jacob was considered an elder of the Foleys, and save for Maurice, no one else dared to offend him without thinking twice.
Levi didn’t know if this woman was being bold out of ignorance or if she was a fool.
He previously heard from Maurice that the second young lady of the Chambers Family was supposed to marry him.
However, the second young lady of the Chamberses, Sienna, was found to be possibly infertile. Naturally, Maurice wouldn’t agree to have an infertile woman marry into the family and chose this woman instead. If it weren’t for her unattractive outfit, he would’ve thought that she was a beautiful and elegant woman when he heard her voice.
He covered his mouth and coughed lightly. “Mr. Tanner, please leave for now.”
“But Mr. Levi, she—”
“Leave.”
His voice was extremely calm, but Rebecca felt a bone-piercing coldness from his tone. She couldn’t help but turn to look at the bed.
The man was sitting up on the bed, and his black shirt enhanced his stone-cold features. However, it couldn’t mask the proud arrogance in his tone.
Even though the lower half of his body was paralyzed, it didn’t affect his noble aura in the slightest. At the very least, Rebecca admired that fact.
If she could get him to tell her about the Foleys, she might learn about the truth behind her grandmother’s death. Hence, she would achieve her objective of coming here.
After finding out the truth, she would think of a way to escape later.
Jacob decided that he shouldn’t intervene further, so he went out respectfully and closed the door.
The room plunged into darkness once again. Rebecca wasn’t used to this, so she asked Levi, “Can I draw the curtains?”
“No.” Levi didn’t even think twice before rejecting the idea. His voice was low and attractive, and it seemed like it could strike through her heart.
“Don’t you think this place is gloomy enough?” In addition to the coldness emanating from his aura, she felt like she would freeze to death.
The man sneered. “Isn’t this perfect? I don’t want to look at you, and you can’t be bothered to look at me.”
Rebecca replied, “We’ll have to see each other every day in the future. Do you want things to stay like this forever?”
He couldn’t run away forever, after all.
“Also, if you keep behaving like this, how am I going to treat your legs?”
A slight shock appeared in Levi’s dark eyes.
“Do you know how to cure my legs?”
Rebecca shrugged in humility. “I can give it a try.”
She wasn’t offering to treat Levi’s leg for free. She wanted him to owe her a favor so that he would be obliged to help her investigate her grandmother’s death. No one in the Foley Family would have more information on this than him.
It had been months since Levi saw the sun. Ever since the hospital announced that he wouldn’t be able to walk, he shut himself in his room and numbed himself.
However, was the woman in front of him truly capable of curing him? Maurice had asked multiple famed doctors for help and visited many hospitals, but none were fruitful.
When Levi thought of this, the light in his eyes dimmed once again.
“Forget it. Even famous doctors can’t cure my legs, so how can you do it?”
He would rather wallow in despair than hold out fruitless hope.
Rebecca could understand why. He was so handsome, yet he could only lie in bed. It must have been such a shock to him.
She raised her pretty eyebrows in confidence.
“You won’t lose anything if you let me try. What if this last-ditch attempt works?”
Levi gave her a cold glare. “Who says this is a last-ditch attempt?”
Rebecca knew that Levi had a foul temper, and she could still appease him at the moment.
She smiled, her eyes curving upward as she patted herself. “My apologies.”
Levi did want to see how capable this woman was, though.
“What do you plan to do now?”
