Chapter Hologram
We left the house about an hour ago. It was still a little cold outside as we drove down the road but we took a couple of coats from the house.
We can always give them back later.
Luna seemed to stiffen up, “Can we stop for a minute? There is a person laying on ground over there.”
I stopped my bike, “Sure. We don’t have anything else to do.”
She jumped off and walked back towards the sidewalk. An older man was laying on the ground, face down. She walked over and crouched down next to him, putting a hand on his shoulder, “He is really cold.”
I walked next to her.
A shock hit my head.
“Does he have a pulse?”
She noticed, “What?”
I reached down, placing my fingers against his neck. Nothing.
Holy shit.
“He’s dead.”
Her eyes dimmed, “Oh my god... what happened to him?”
“It was probably too cold last night. They aren’t like us... He couldn’t protect himself from the snow. He probably didn’t even know what was happening.”
We both looked up when Macy started barking at something down the street.
Oh my god.
There were two more people laying in the road, not moving.
Luna pointed out more that were laying next to each other, “There is five more... How many more do you think are like this? All those people... that giant mob. Do you think they are still alive?”
I stood with wide eyes looking at all the bodies, “I am not sure... none of them could help themselves.”
There is so many of them... dead.
Then it hit us... whatever happened is way worse than we thought.
Luna looked toward me, “We have to find a way to stop this. We have to figure out what happened. People are actually dying now... we can’t ignore this.”
I saw a tear roll down from her eyes, “Why are we the only two in this whole freaking city that are acting like normal humans?!”
I placed my hand on her shoulder, “We will figure this out... We’ll find my dad and he can help us.”
She rolled into me, wrapping her arm around me, “I can’t take this anymore. I want everything to go back to normal... I want to actually remember things. I can’t even remember if I have any family out there somewhere... They are probably dead too!”
I wrapped arms around her back, “Don’t say that... We have each other. We can get through this together, just don’t quit on me yet.”
She pulled back and rubbed her eyes, “Okay... I won’t quit on you, as long as you don’t quit on me either.”
I smiled, “I won’t... Do you want to get back to driving? After all we have a dad to find.”
She let out a small laugh, “Let’s get to it then.”
We jumped back on the bike and began driving again, passing all the bodies of the ground.
Hopefully we won’t run into many more of those. I don’t think she will be able to stay with me if there is all this death around her.
About an hour later, we stopped again after driving through the mazes of buildings. We got off the bike and should in front of a buildings.
My head got shocked again.
A cafe.
I looked over at Luna, “It’s a cafe. We can make some food.”
Her eyes brightened up, “Well if there is food involved I am in.”
Macy jumped out of her sidecar, wagging her tail.
I laughed, “It looks like Macy is in too.”
We walked up to the door, pushing it open.
Thank god, we don’t have to break into something for once.
The cafe was small but comfy, with a long white counter, a few booths, and black and white tiles on the floor. There was some noise in the kitchen and the pots hanging from the ceiling banged against each other. Luna hid behind me, grabbing onto my arm. I saw a guy stare at me for a few seconds then jump out the kitchen window, running off, “It’s okay. It was just someone in the kitchen. They are gone now.”
She let out a breath and released my arm, “Sorry... I am just a little shaken up.”
I gave her a smile, “It’s okay. I don’t mind. To be honest I am a little shaken up too.”
She looked down at her hands, playing with her fingers.
“I will go make you something to drink. Just sit down. I won’t be long.”
She nodded avoiding eye contact. I jumped over the corner and walked into the kitchen. It was a little messy from the guy that was previously in here, I am assuming looking for food. I looked into the fridge first spotting the whipped cream right away.
My head began to ache.
“Ben your hot cocoa is ready!”
My mom set a mug down of the delicious chocolate liquid in front of me as I sat at the table. She then sprayed a giant mountain of whipped cream on top, “A whole bunch of whipped cream. Just as you like it.”
I smiled at her, “Thanks mom!”
My headache disappeared and I wiped the blood from under my nose.
Why am I so use to this happening?
I grabbed some milk, cocoa powder, and sugar, pouring it into a pan on the stove. I sat stirring it until it was hot and poured out two mugs. I grabbed whipped cream, creating a mountain like my mom does. I carried it out the Luna and set it in front of her. Her eyes grew wide, “That is a lot of whipped cream!”
I laughed, “I hope you are one of those people who like a lot of it.”
She laughed, “Who doesn’t?”
She took a long sip, “Oh my god that is so good.”
We sat in silence enjoying our drinks until there was nothing left but the chunks of cocoa powder at the bottom. I was about to carry the mugs back into the kitchen but we were startled by a voice.
Luna jumped up from her stool while I jumped over the counter, “Where is it coming from?”
She listened for a moment, “It sounds like the next room over.”
She pointed to a door across the room, “Hello? Is anyone there?”
The voice was muffled but it was definitely there. We both walked towards the door hearing the voice get louder but it stopped. I gripped the door knob looking towards Luna, “Ready?”
She nodded and I opened the door to what looked like a break room. We walked in seeing a man sitting at a desk, he looked straight ahead not even seeing us. Luna’s eyes widened, “Oh my god we thought we were the only ones!”
He still didn’t look towards us. We both walked towards him, “Hello?”
Luna got closer reaching out her hand but it went through the desk and his body like a cloud, “What the hell?”
A shock hit my head.
It’s a hologram.
Damn it! Why does it have to be a hologram?!
Luna looked panicked but I gently grabbed her arm, “It’s a hologram... He isn’t a real person.”
Her eyes dimmed then I saw them get watery, “No... Why can’t we just get a break for once?”
We both stared at it as it began talking again, “Once again this is a special report... It’s has been almost a week into the chemical bombing on New York and sources say the strange gas has wiped everyone’s brains within the city limits. The citizens of New York have no memory of anything and can’t even talk. The National Guard has been order by the President to form a perimeter around the city not letting anyone in or out. They will be moving into the city within the next two days with the CDC in order to investigate more into this strange attack. The Government will not release any information about who committed this attack. We will keep you updated as we get more information. Our hearts go out to the citizens of New York. God bless America.”
He then disappeared into the small tablet laying on the ground.
Luna looked shocked, “Did he just say bombing and gas?”
I looked at her in the same shock, “I guess we know what happened now.”
We both stared at the tablet on the ground.
Why the hell would someone want to bomb New York with a gas that wipes peoples brains? And why aren’t our brains wiped too?
I don’t like this.
