The Journal of Memories

Chapter Blizzard

Two days later...

White snowflakes have been floating down all morning. We are somewhere in the outskirts of the city. The roads were wet and white from the snow. We were huddled up under a bridge trying to fight back bitter cold. We haven’t had any luck in finding a place to stay, most of the doors were locked and we couldn’t break in, feeling the guilt that someone lives there. Especially, after the store we broke into. Luna was wrapped up a thin blanket with Macy curled at her feet. We are all shivering as our clothes and her fur are soaking wet. Her lips were turning blue and I could hear her teeth chattering.

Shit.

“Luna... W-we h-have t-t-to f-fi-find a place t-t-to stay.”

She slowly looked up, her bright eyes were dimmed down, and her skin was pale.

I shuffled over to her, wrapping my arms around her to help her up, “L-let’s f-fi-find a house.”

She shook her head and talked barely audible, “S-s-someone l-lives t-t-there.”

I gripping onto her tighter, “We w-will d-die out h-here if we d-don’t.”

She hesitantly nodded her head and shuffled next closer to me.

We began walking down the street barely being able to see as the snow grew heavier. Everything just looked white and the wind grew colder.

I will get my motorcycle later. We have to get inside soon. I don’t know how long Luna can hold up.

I picked up the pace basically dragging Luna with me as I walked to the side of the road. I spotted a house and pulled Luna to the steps. I helped her sit down, “Stay here for a second I have to find a way in.”

I tried the door finding it was locked and went to the windows. My hands were so cold that they felt like they were going to break when I pulled on the window. I walked down the narrow alley and found another window slightly cracked open.

Thank you so much to whoever left this open!

I struggled but finally got it open enough so I could get in. My feet hit the wood flooring and I stood up into the unknown person’s living room.

This place is huge! Luna is going to be so happy.

I walked through the room to the front door, unlocking it. I walked down a few steps having to pick up Luna as she was very weak. Macy came running in before I closed the door leaving the cold outside. She immediately shook out her fur and wagged her tail. I took Luna to the living room and laid her on a giant, comfortable couch.

Now I just have to find heat.

I looked around...shock.

A fireplace.

My head began to hurt.

My dad was sitting in front of a fireplace, “Hey Ben do you want to help with the fire?”

I jumped off the couch and sat next to him, “Sure.”

“First you have to put the log on. Then turn on the gas and light it with a match. It not as hard as making a fire from scratch,” He laughed to himself.

I snapped back to reality walking over to the fireplace. A few minutes later a had a pretty decent fire going. I stood up and went to Luna. Her eyes were closed and her breathing was slow.

Shit! Stay with me... don’t die.

I picked her up laying her on the floor next to the fire. Macy curled up next to her, watching her.

“Stay with her I will be back in a few minutes.”

I should probably look for more blankets.

I walked out the living room to the bottom of a grand staircase.

I definitely picked a good house to break into.

Walking up the stairs, I found about three bedrooms and another living room. I walked into one of the bedrooms assuming it was for guests because everything was so clean. Opening the closet, I found a stack of sheets and blankets. I journeyed back down stairs noticing a couple more rooms at the bottom.

I will explore later. For now I have to make sure Luna is okay.

I walked back into the living room, kneeling down next to Luna. Her skin was getting some color back into it. I draped a few blankets over her.

She will get warmer if her wet clothes were off but I will wait for her to do that herself.

I grabbed one of the blankets for myself, wrapping up, and sitting off to the side of her. Macy snuggled closer to me, laying her head on my leg. Feeling the warmth of the fire, I watched Luna, waiting for her to wake up.

An hour later...

I have been forcing my eyes to stay awake as I watched over Luna. Her eyes closed and hopefully she is only sleeping.

She began to move as she rolled to her side. I saw her eyes flicker open, “Ben?”

I moved into her view, “Hey...”

“Where are we?”

I guilty looked down, “In someone’s house. We had no other choice. I didn’t break anything though, the window was open.”

She smiled, “Well they were basically inviting us in if the window was open.”

I laughed, “Yeah, it’s actually a pretty nice house too.”

She sat up a bit and looked around, her eyes going wide, “Well you sure know how to pick them, don’t you?”

“I was thinking we could explore the whole house when we get into some fresh clothes. That also involves raiding their closets though.”

Her face perked with interest, “That sounds awesome! Imagine the clothes these people have!”

I laughed.

I guess she is feeling better now.

“Would you like some tea first?”

This really sparked her interest, “Yes!”

She jumped up, pulling me with her, “To the kitchen!”

We walked into a giant kitchen, probably twice the size of mine. Luna’s bright eyes grew wider, “If this is just the kitchen, could you imagine their bedrooms?!”

I laughed again, “I already saw the guest bedroom. I am not sure about the others though.”

She pushed me towards the stove, “You get to tea ready while I will raid their closets for something to wear.”

She bounced out of the kitchen with Macy happily following her. I searched the cabinets finding the kettle and some tea. I filled it with water, placing it over the flame on the stove.

She gets so excited over the weirdest things.
