The Journal of Memories

Chapter A weird superhero

I opened my eyes to see Luna and Macy still asleep. I jumped out of the warm bed and was hit with the cold morning. Wrapping my arms around myself I looked around for something to warm us up.

Shock.

The heater.

I walked over and stood by it for a few seconds, feeling a little bit of warm air hit my skin.

Well it is kind of working.

Suddenly, there was the sound of a lot of footsteps coming towards us. I opened the curtain a bit to look out the window. My eyes connected with a large group of about a hundred people shuffling down the street. They all were staring straight ahead, somewhere bumping into the cars as they walked passed.

They really look like zombies now.

Macy woke up and barked causing about ten of them to look at the window. I quickly shut the curtain, “Macy be quiet.”

She laid back down on the bed and whined. Luna slowly opened her eyes, “Ben? What’s going on?”

I jumped when something hit against the window.

What the hell was that?

I opened the curtain a little to see the mob of people right outside and crowding around the building. I quickly closed it again and got up, locking the door with the deadbolt. Luna seemed more panicked, “What is happening?”

Are they planning to kill us or some shit now?!

I looked over and whispered, “Stay calm and keep quiet. There is a mob of people outside. If we stay quiet they might go away.”

She froze in place and I could see her shaking, “No... Not again.”

I got up and knelt in front of her, grabbing her hands, “They aren’t going to hurt you. We are safe here. They don’t know how to open doors.”

At least I think they can’t...

The was another hit against the window, making her jump out of her own skin. I squeezed her hands, “Look at me... you are safe. Okay?”

She stared into my eyes and hesitantly nodded, “Okay.”

Through the curtains we could see the faint outline of people beginning to walk passed. A few still hit against the window now and then but, they seemed to keep going on their way.

Why are there so many of them? And why are they mobbed together like that?

Luna began to settle down more as the outlines began to thin out indicating that most of them are almost gone.

I looked over Luna’s arms seeing the scratches from the guy were still red and open.

We forgot to clean that up last night.

I gently release her hands and grabbed the first aid kit, “Hey... we need to clean up your arms. I think you will be more comfortable if we did it in the bathroom.”

She slowly looked up at me, “Yeah... That is probably better.”

She jumped on the counter next to the sink while I pulled out some hydrogen peroxide. Dripping it onto a cotton ball, I dabbed it over the scratches causing her to hiss in pain, “Sorry... I didn’t mean to hurt you.”

She chuckled, “Yeah, I didn’t think you did it on purpose.”

I laughed, “Damn, I guess you are back to being sarcastic.”

She let out a bright smile as I continued to clean her arm, “We should probably wrap this in gauze. We don’t want it to get infected.”

Her eyes dimmed and she chuckled.

I looked at her with interest, “What?”

She just smiled again, “It’s nothing.”

“Oh... come on. Tell me.”

She laughed, “I was thinking, with my arms wrapped up in gauze, I would look like a weird superhero I used to dress up as when I was a kid.”

Shock.

I laughed finally understanding what she was talking about, “Well you definitely look weird.”

She playfully punched my arm, “Damn and I thought I was mean.”

She held out her arms while I wrapped them in gauze and packed everything back up into the kit. I looked over at her as jumped off the counter, “Hmm... You actually do look like a superhero. If only we had a cape.”

She laughed, “Hell no! I am not going to be that weird.”

I packed everything back up into the backpack and pulled out the packaged of waffles, “You want some breakfast?”

Her eyes lit up, “Is that even a question?”

Macy’s ears perked up.

“Wow Luna, you even made the dog hungry!”

I reached in the bag pulling out a can of dog food, ripping it open and placing it on the floor. Macy immediately jumped off the bed and ran to it; wagging her tail as she happily ate.

We both laughed and Luna put her hands up, “Waffle me!”

I tossed two waffles to her like frisbees which she caught and sat back on the bed. We both began digging into our food in silence. I looked over to the window seeing no more outlines of people, “It looks like they have left.”

She stopped eating for a second, “Thank god. We should definitely try to stay away from them.”

I nodded my head to that and continued eating.

We finished our breakfast and packed everything up, leaving the room. Luna closed the door, “Goodbye crappy motel! You have served us well!”

I laughed throwing my leg over my bike and Macy jumping into the side car. Luna then jumped on with the backpack and wrapped her arms around my waist, “Onward! The journey continues!”

I let off a loud laugh starting the bike up, “You are definitely a weirdo.”

She kicked the back of my leg, “Hey!”

We both laughed and drove off down the road, awaiting the unknown city.
