The Inauguration

Chapter 28

“We were summoned by the mistress herself”,

“Wait, when did we decide we were going to address her as the mistress?”,

“right now,” Kobus smirks, looking at a glaring Tobias.

Lucius smiles at their conversation and settles further into the seat, already missing the warm office and serene comfort it brought him.

He watched as the car drove past the forest scenery. It was quiet out, the stars were dancing across the skies and the colour of the moon made him want to stop and enjoy it while it lasted.

Who knows how long it was before he would see the lovely yellow moon.

His wolf hummed in agreement, it was beautiful. He wasn’t a man to deny the meaning of beauty and he wasn’t prideful not to acknowledge when something was beautiful, it was one of the few things he got from his mother.

His mama.

He went to visit her before they left for the road, and as usual, she was the same. Her skin was pale and her chest rose and fell ever so slightly. Her breathing was slow and her eyes never opened, but Lucius could see she still dreamed under the eyelids.

And a part of him was happy because that reminded him that his mother was still alive. His mother was still here with him, even if she could never move or he couldn’t hear her calling out to him, he knew that she was still here.

And that was enough for now.

He wished to see the grey eyes he shared, the sound of her laughter. He smiles remembering the way her laugh echoed in the halls of the house, the way she made everyone smile without even trying. The way she lightened up the room, calmed everyone down, the way everyone thought she was a blessing from the goddess herself.

Yes, those memories were lovely, reminded him of the times before Elina.

But those memories never lasted as the love and happy smiles came to the heartbreaking cries that still echoed his ears. He loved the memories of his mother but he also couldnt help but hate them because they just reminded him why she was like this. Why she ended up like this.

And whenever he did, he couldn’t help the rage that overtook him. He couldn’t help the want for revenge to take over his body and all he wanted to do was kill Elina and put her on a spike.

But that wouldn’t bring his mother back and besides, he wanted Elina to suffer. The image that his wolf flooded his mind with was nothing but a long and torturous death that he found fit for Elina.

Revenge.

His head turns to the woman only sitting a seat away from him. Her head is laid against the window glass and she stares out the window. Her mind not here in the present time and he knew she could only be thinking about her sister.

He sighed and turned away. He felt her mates eyes on him. Tobias was his delta. They both share a knowing look, they were both worried about her and he knew Tobias partially blamed him for that but he would never say anything.

He was Tobias like that.

He didn’t like war, he didn’t like violence. For a large man, whose frame was two times larger than his, he was a big softy. Tobias looks away from him and to his mate for a few seconds before focusing on the road ahead.

He looks away from Tobias and back to the cold darkness outside. The once yellow moon now clouded by the white clouds. It tries to shine through the clouds but it fails.

Here he was already halfway through his plans for revenge and yet he rebuked his own Gamma’s revenge plan. He was a hypocrite and one thing he hated in this world were hypocrites.

He never wanted to be one, he never wanted to be considered a hypocrite but looking at Genhji, he couldn’t help but acknowledge the truth as it was.

He was a hypocrite.

But what was he supposed to do? Reject his mate and move on as if he never met her because Genhji asked him to because Genhji hated her own sisters gut.

Yes, he could hear his subconscious whisper.

But the grunts of his wolf rejected that idea. His wolf didn’t like the idea of rejecting his mate, didn’t want to even think of rejecting the being that was made for him.

And Lucius knew and understood that. But he couldn’t deny that he wanted to make Genhji happy. He wanted to make the woman who sat beside him happy, he wanted to see her smile. He wanted her to talk to him instead of looking out the window as if they were strangers.

He didn’t like the silent treatment. He never liked Genhji’s silent treatments, she would stare at you like a stranger, a nobody who she would pass by in the city. Her cold shoulder was colder than usual and her expression never changed.

Ever since their conversation in his office, all he had gotten from her was the silent treatment and he couldn’t bear It.

The sound of howls echoes in the sky and he turns to Genhji. He watches as she comes back from wherever her mind went. Her back straightens and she looks to her mate through the mirror.

Tobias smiles at her and she looks away but he could see the blush rush to her cheeks. She composes herself and her voice echoes in the car.

“They know we’re here. Let’s get to work”, she says while looking at Tobias and Nicholas but never at him.

He sighs, nodding to himself, knowing what he had to do. He had a choice to make.
