Chapter 29
Scarlett
I saw the stone coming towards me and I stood still, maybe dying there would be less painful than waiting for the silver to consume me from the inside.
There, I closed my eyes and waited.
"Open your eyes, Scarlett." Her voice was soft, a whisper, but it wasn't in my ears, it was a whisper inside my head, and it was her, it was the Goddess speaking to me.
And I obeyed, I opened my eyes quickly, but everything was still in slow motion, there I saw what she wanted me to see.
Thomas appeared and grabbed the rock that was coming towards me, he pushed the rock aside and I heard the sound of one of his arms breaking, he was strong, and it was enough to save my life, but not to leave unharmed, although I knew his arm would heal in a few hours. I looked around to see all the guards fighting, warring, ours against those from the South. And then I saw that not only had my brother come here, but the Council guards and my father's convoy too. They went towards Joshua, Bertha, and Brisa, but instinctively my body looked the other way, where the houses of our wolves were, the houses of our people, fear took me over again, thinking that if the war there took on greater proportions, could hit them.
And it was then that I saw Mathew, he came out of one of the houses, and behind him came Mrs. Werner and the boy, they saw the scene of war and Mathew's eyes widened, he then looked at them and put them back inside of the house. He was protecting them, just like a real man should. They were supposed to be together, and this was supposed to be his next family that the Goddess talked about.
There I understood, she said that Mathew needed to go through all that with me, for him to suffer and change inside, to be ready for his next family.
And then I regained my faith, the faith she asked me to have, the Goddess told me that in the end the righteous will prevail and that I should have faith.
Because I doubted, if I knew that everything happened for a reason if she had already proven this to me so many times, why did I still doubt?
And my brain sought in the prophecies the answer I wanted, the real answer, And there is born the new leader who withstood,
Withstood.
My son would not come into the world easily, the prophecy said that he would be a leader and a withstood leader. And I knew that everything was for a reason, and I had a reason to act, my reason was him.
I felt my bleeding stop, but that didn't make sense, with the silver bleeding I would bleed to death.
By a miracle, my bleeding stopped.
I saw Brisa try to escape, but with all my strength I got up and grabbed her arm.
"You're not getting out of this," I said and her brown eyes reached mine, I don't know where I got my strength from, but I did it. And she looked like cornered prey.
A Council guard grabbed her other arm and took her, but the scene was still a war, guards fighting and I needed to put an end to that.
"Stop." The scream was loud and came with all the strength of my lungs, but I knew deep down that some of the scream was hers too, the Goddess screamed at me. "It's over, you are on our territory, we are in the majority, and the Council is on our side, spare your guards, we don't need any more deaths." The last sentence came out like a plea, I couldn't stand anyone else dying for that senseless war, and it was already over, the South was practically completely surrendered.
And by a miracle, another one that day, they listened to me, the guards from the South stopped fighting little by little, there was no reason for them to fight anymore, it was a lost fight, and if they continued fighting there they would just kill themselves slowly.
But in one last attempt, seeing his plan slipping away and falling apart before his eyes, Joshua tried to free himself from the Council guards who were arresting him, pulled out a gun, and went towards Christopher, who was still in wolf form and I just heard the bang, the loud sound of the shot, it was strong and left me dizzy, a hoarse grunt followed it, I blinked hard a few times trying to understand. Until I saw Christopher's wolf jumping towards Joshua, he just tried to bite Joshua's arm, immobilizing him, but Joshua fought back, forcing Christopher to bite him, and the fight got uglier and more violent until Christopher bit him. Joshua's belly shook him once again and released his lifeless body.
And there we had the end.
Only at that moment did I realize that I had released the air that I was holding in my lungs, I ran straight towards Christopher, still in wolf form, his blue eyes captured me, and I saw his brown fur take on a red tone in the region of his front paw, it was the shot, the shot hit him in the arm and even so he fought, even so he won, he howled, and I realized that his wolf was not giving way to him, because of the pain and possibly because of the silver in the bullet, when wolves were in immense pain and under the influence of the silver, communication between them was confused. I ran my fingers through the thick hair on his neck and made him look at me.
"I'll help you stand still," I said, taking the dagger that was in my leg holster, which Christopher himself placed there.
I picked up the blade and took a deep breath.
"It's going to hurt, but I need to get the bullet out," I said and I didn't hesitate before thrusting the blade into the cut, Christopher's wolf screamed in pain, and I felt my wolf scratch my chest, wanting to get out, wanting to help him, but I pushed her down, I knew that at that moment, there was no other person more qualified to save him than me. So I made the cut bigger, and I put my two fingers inside the wound, he screamed again and it hurt me, the tips of my fingers were hunting for the bullet, which must have been bringing agony to him, and burning, I felt the bullet in my fingertips, but I didn't feel it burning. I just held it with all the strength I had on such a small contact surface and pulled it out as gently as I could.
The relief and sigh that Christopher and his wolf gave, I felt inside me too.
With the second breath, Christopher turned into a human, and I looked for a piece of clothing around me and wrapped it around his arm tightly, he needed to go to the hospital quickly, and without the bullet, he would survive.
But what happened next I didn't expect. All the Southern guards knelt in front of us and placed their right hands in front of their chests, followed by ours as well.
"Long live the Alpha." Everyone shouted in chorus the guards from the Sout and ours, from the bottom of their hearts and with all the strength they had in their lungs.
It took me a few seconds to understand, Joshua attacked Christopher inside our territory, and Christopher killed him, he automatically became their new Alpha. Christopher placed one hand in front of his chest before shouting.
"For the Pack and the Goddess." I got chills when the vibrations of his voice hit me.
"For the Alpha, the Pack, and the Goddess." The guards repeated and at that moment Christopher turned to me.
"We both need to go to the hospital." He said, like an order. "Can you guys try to organize all this mess?" He asked my father and Marquardt who just nodded.
"Go Alpha, be safe, we'll take care of it from here," My dad said next, practically shoving us into the car.
It took me a few seconds for my breathing to recover, there was a lot, a lot of emotion, and some things I still couldn't understand.
Still fearing what I would see, I decided to tilt my face to look at where my cut was, where until a few minutes ago blood was gushing, and I had no idea how my body managed to stop a silver wound.
When I looked at where I was stabbed, there was only a thin, delicate scar, the scar was shaped like a thin crescent moon, and it made me smile.
"You are not afraid?" Christopher's voice cut me off.
"About what?" I asked genuinely without knowing.
"You received a silver wound. Afraid he…isn't okay." Christopher's voice cracked, almost as if he was afraid to say it out loud.
"No." My voice came out firm, like pure certainty. "The Goddess told me many things, one of them was to have faith above all else, and the other is that the prophecies are right, and he is the new leader who withstood."
"And there is born the new leader who withstood," Christopher recited the prophecy and smiled, there, he understood too.
Christopher pulled me with the hand that wasn't injured and I snuggled into his chest, he buried his nose in my hair, taking a deep breath, before saying.
"Thank you for saving my life," He said first, squeezing me even tighter in his embrace.
"Thank you, for saving mine," And in that instant, I realized that since we met in the middle of that dance floor, we had saved each other.
