Chapter A Confusing Ares
Max POV
My little wolf has been cooking every day this week with the Omegas. The food tasted even better when she was in charge of the kitchen.
Julie was doing great at the pack and nearly took charge of all her duties as a Luna after Aphrodite had finished all her work. The Blue Moon was thriving, all thanks to my beautiful mate.
The only thing that was bothering me for days was Michael. Nobody was able to locate him. I had talked multiple times to Kell, and nothing from the council. Not even one pack had come forward with information. It was like the man had disappeared from the earth.
I was walking from a meeting with Terry. Many mates were expecting
pups, and the pack was growing enormously. We needed to assess the situation and start planning to build more housing. All the mates would leave the pack house for a house in the village.
But my mind was not in the right place for that meeting. Ares was restless inside me the whole day, pacing, and I could not concentrate. “What is it, Ares?”
“I don’t know, kid. Something is wrong.” Walking in circles, he answered me like everything was bothering him. “Do you want to get out for another run?” We had already run and hunted twice today, but letting him out again in his element would help.
“I don’t need another bloody run, Max.” Ares’ voice was vicious and scary. He had never behaved like that. I have never seen him like that for no reason. If I were not his master, I would be afraid of him now.
“Wow, come down, buddy.” I tried to calm him down, but it was in vain. He was going around in circles and could not sit down.
“Julie is at the school. How about we stop working and get our little mate for a picnic? The tree leaves are orange on the ground because of the autumn; you know it is Julie’s favourite season. She will be impressed by how beautiful it gets up on the hills.” I was hoping her scent would calm him down.
He stopped for a second but did not sit down. “Ok, let me be in control.”
I shook my head. “Ares, I don’t think it is a good idea. You feel scary right now. I don’t want you to hurt the pups. She is with the little ones right now playing.” In a split second, Ares overpowered me and was in total control. “I am not asking, Max.” His voice was curt, and I knew fighting him would not end well.
“Right, but come down. Whatever it is, please do not project your Alpha aura onto them. Everybody knows you are their Alpha and respects you. We can’t hurt the pups at the nursery.”
Ares’ feelings were confusing. It felt like everything we had was going to disappear at any moment. I had never sensed fear coming from him before, not even in war. But this easiness that he was projecting was fear.
I only recognised it because I once felt the same when I found Julie nearly dead in the bathroom. Fear consumed my body at that time. I thought she could not be saved on time, and I had lost Julie forever.
Ares walked at a fast pace to the nursery. It was like he needed her to breathe and could not slow down till he had her. “Ares. I feel fear coming from you. What are you afraid of, buddy?”
“She is out of our reach for too long today. You should not have let her, Maximus!!!” Was he afraid that Julie would leave us? We were in a perfect place now. Julie was happy and felt loved by me and everyone. Every time I was near her, I could feel it.
“Ares. She is just at the nursery playing with the pups and helping them today. She will never leave us, buddy. You can calm down. I don’t like what you feel right now.”
Ares did not answer me. He jumped in the air and shifted, ripping my clothes off as soon as the she-wolf opened the door. I saw Connor outside the nursery talking to a she-wolf, and Ares got closer to him and groaned loudly. He was her guard and was distracted from talking to a female.
Ares got in a position to attack, and Connor got in front of the female, only triggering Ares further. Connor could not defend himself from an angry Alpha, and Ares would quickly kill him. He would only be a match to Ares if he were defending Julie against him.
All the pups came out in the yard, and the minders. “Easy there, Ares. She is safe. You can feel it. She is inside.” The pups looked scared. Ares was way bigger than before and was projecting danger. I tried to get back control without success.
When Ares was ready to attack, he sensed her presence outside. Julie had finally come out to see all the commotion. “Max?” Her sweet voice was calm, and I was glad I could not sense fear coming from her. It would make Ares even more aggressive if our female feared us now. In Ares’ head, he was protecting her.
Ares turned his head to look at her and ran towards Julie jumping on her. Julie fell backwards on the grass, and Ares went on top of her. Like a vicious wolf, he started to rub himself on her and licked her face. Ares did not mindlink her. It was like he was possessed.
The pups started to scream when Ares jumped on Julie, and I noticed that Connor moved in his direction to take him down. Ares was acting crazy, and Connor was concerned. “NO, CONNOR!! Take everybody back inside. Ares is not himself, but he will never hurt her.” Even with my command on the mindlink, Connor did not move. It was like he was consulting his wolf. “Connor, he will not hurt her, but he will kill everyone that gets closer. NOW GO!!!!”
The last thing I needed was to comfort families of killed pups because their Alpha was not in the right mind. Connor finally made a move asking everybody to go inside. I was sure he would not let it go and had mindlinked the doctor to put Ares to sleep. We had wolfsbane in the pack in case mates got crazy, and I knew once Ares sensed anyone getting closer and the smell of it, heads would be ripped.
“Ares, let’s leave. You want to have her just for yourself, right? You are scaring your pack, and you will hurt her like that. She is small, and you don’t want to hurt her.”
Ares stepped aside and lowered his head and the front paws. He showed her that he wanted her to ride him to leave. I could feel that Julie was confused, and finally, Ares eased my mind, and I could mindlink her. “That is all right, Julie. Just do what he wants. Jump on his back. He wants you to himself.”
Ares was obsessed with Julie, and it might be because he thought Julie would go against Aphrodites’ will. I could not make anything out of his feelings. He was not talking, just being irrational.
Julie quietly jumped on his back, and when he started running, she held tightly to his fur. Ares ran very fast towards the hills, and as I thought, the ground was covered with yellow and orange tree leaves, making the view up there even more magical.
When Ares stopped to a perfect view above the Ocean, he lowered himself to a sit position, but when Julie started to stand up, he groaned lower, telling her not to leave.
Ares blocked me, and I could not mindlink her to help. I was in the backseat, only a spectator. But it was like Julie knew what he wanted. She leaned her chest on his back and held his neck, petting his fur. They stayed quiet, only enjoying the perfect blue waves coming and going.
The air was getting cold up there, and I knew it would start snowing soon, and I could not wait to show it to Julie. I was sure she would love it and soon our pups. I sniffed the air every morning, hoping for her scent to change. It would be the first sign that she would be carrying our pups.
And every time I thought about that, I could not believe how crazy everything had got. We already knew what our pups would look like and why they would be gifted to us.
It was after the orange sunset when Ares finally gave me back control. Aphrodite did not show up; he only needed reassurance from Julie. Julie was lying on him in the same position for hours and fell asleep. I shifted back to my human form, pulled her back to my chest, and inhaled her scent. With all of Ares’ messing feelings inside me, my head was spinning too.
“I am sorry little one. I am trying to figure out what happened to Ares and why he acted like that. You handled him very well.” I whispered in her ear, and she moved in her sleep, opening her eyes. I moved her to look at me. Those beautiful big grey eyes I loved so much shone with the orange sky, and I smiled looking into them.
“I am proud of you, Julie, every day.” I gave her a soft kiss holding her tight to my chest. I moved her onto my lap, facing me, and I felt I needed her now as much as Ares had needed her earlier.
The day was already chaotic with Ares, and I did not want to be animalistic as Ares had been earlier. Julie was in a perfect position, with each leg at one side of my waist. My flesh was bare from the shift, and I pulled her floral dress to her waist and ripped her panties. I entered her without stopping the kiss. I was hungry for her, and as I moved inside her, I took another deep breath on her neck to make me slow down on my movements.
I wanted to have a slow taste of everything that was mine forever. The New Moon made the sky dark, and all that could be heard were our moans of passion. Julie begged me to let her come; that was the closest we had been since our first mating. Now we complete each other in a way that I could not imagine.
Just before we came, I took the rest of her dress off. I needed to feel the intense sparks on my bare flesh like I needed air to breathe. At that moment, I knew I could not leave a day without her and that the mate bond had dominated my body completely.
We stayed like that holding each other in the dark and breathing heavily from our release. I pulled out of her, and when I felt she was asleep again, I carried her to our perfect place. After our intense day, the wooden cabin felt like the right place to be.
When we got there, I lit the fireplace in our room and lay beside her on our bed. Sleep felt good and peaceful, and rest came like a brick just after my head hit the pillow. Ares was quiet since he gave me control, and I knew I did not need to worry about him anymore. I had Julie safely in my arms; it was all I needed.
But in the middle of the night, something woke me up. I felt a rush of energy moving inside me, and I was wide awake. Julie sat abruptly in bed like she had a nightmare and looked at me in the dark, but it was not Julie, Aphrodite was in control, and her pink eyes sparkled more than I had ever seen before.
“They are here, handsome. They came for me.”
Ares didn't know, but his behaviour was because he felt danger closer. The war is about to start, and Aphrodite sees it coming for her. Do you think it will be enough time to prevent the warriors on patrol from getting killed, as they cannot sense it coming because of the Witch’s potions?
