Chapter 26
"That jerk," Ella screamed, gritting her teeth as she clenched his fists, "How could he have said that?"
"I know," Kylan sighed, "he's ashamed of me." That mere word reminded him of the countless insults his father yelled at him, for the same reason Jonah was ashamed. It always caused his stomach to clench, not from anger but disappointment. Ella noticed Kylan's gloomy stare as he observed the road ahead of him, and she gritted her teeth, "You are letting this boy get the best of you. He has shown you numerous times that he's not gay."
"He's the only one that's ever kissed me in public," he replied quietly.
"I'll kiss you in public if that is what it takes."
"It's not the same thing, Ella," he wrinkled his nose, "and that would be gross."
"It is the same thing."
"No," he shook his head, "he's not a girl. He's the only guy that said we were together when someone asked. And he did not reject me when I told him I liked him, Ella."
Ella paused for a moment, then crossed her arms, "You really like him."
"He's been my crush for two years; of course, I do."
"That was a crush, Ky," she hissed, "but you literally like him now."
He sighed, "He did bring me to the beach and the movies."
"That does not mean anything-"
"Then I don't know, alright, Ella?" he snapped, shaking his head. When he noticed her eyes suddenly squint into a glare, he gulped, "I didn't mean to scream at you, I'm sorry."
They parked, and before Ella descended the vehicle, she said, "Apology not accepted."
A few seniors screamed, "Homo!"
"Why don't you say that right in front of me, punks!" Ella snarled, clenching her fists. As per usual, Kylan wrapped an arm over her shoulders and guided her towards the school, forcing her to ignore them as she gritted her teeth, growling under her breath. "I'm done with this whole school," she complained, "everyone here is so childish."
"Tell me about it," he agreed, stopping at the opening to his classroom.
Ella continued to walk forward, "That included you as well." After sending him narrowed eyes, she turned the corner and disappeared from his sight.
As Kylan entered the room, he was not surprised when Jonah was the first gaze he met. The worry behind them was extremely noticeable, and he seemed agitated, biting his bottom lip and observing as Kylan calmly made his way to the back. Before he could even sit down, Jonah hissed, "You're making me worry too much, Kylan," he leaned towards him, "why aren't you answering my calls?"
Kylan did not turn to stare at him. Rather he sat down and faced the front, "I don't have my cellphone on me."
"I meant after you left the field yesterday."
"I was busy," he replied calmly.
Jonah raised an eyebrow, "No, you weren't. You didn't answer my calls because you're mad at me for what I said to Bradley."
Kylan chuckled, finally turning his head and meeting Jonah's eyes, "Then why are you asking me?"
Jonah frowned, pausing for a moment and staring at the hurt behind Kylan's gaze. The attitude he was receiving did not reflect that emotion, and before he could reply, the teacher began his lesson. He was forced to wait until the end of the class, but when the bell rang, Kylan left the classroom rapidly, avoiding talking to Jonah.
They were forced to see one another during P.E class, and the instance Kylan opened his locker in the changing room, Jonah approached him, leaning on the locker beside it, "We are eventually going to have to talk about this. I find it immature that you are going about your day ignoring me "
"I'm not ignoring you," Kylan replied, rolling his eyes. He was surprisingly calm, although his stomach flared with butterflies, and he was growing nervous every second Jonah stood near him. He stripped himself of his shirt, and Jonah's eyes lowered to his physique, wanting to touch him but remembering that there were many other men around.

He shook his head, refocusing on the subject, "You're avoiding me." Kylan changed his pants into shorts, and Jonah turned around for that since he would have been turned on. However, when Kylan did not respond, he turned back around only to find him gone. He had raced into the gym, and he growled under his breath, shutting Kylan's locker; he had left it open so that Jonah would not know he was done.
Bradley frowned, following behind Jonah, "He hasn't talked to you yet?"
"He's avoiding me," Jonah hissed, glaring at Kylan's back, "it's pissing me off. I want to beat him up."
"I think he could put up a good fight against you, to be honest."
"He's five foot eleven," Jonah scoffed, "I'm six foot two."
"Did that hurt your sense of pride?"
"Shut up," he shoved Bradley away, marching towards the group.
It was only after school when Jonah finally got his chance to talk to him. Kylan had been walking towards the exit to meet with Ella when he was abruptly pulled into a dark classroom, and before he could repress the shock and realize what is occurring, the door was locked.
Jonah stood in front of it, breathing heavily since it took a bit of effort to get Kylan into the room.
"Kylan, we need to talk-"
"Let me out."
"No," he refused, narrowing his eyes, "we need to talk."
"I'll yell for help," he threatened. This was not his usual behavior, and he did still like Jonah, but there was a feeling of shame that returned every time he spoke to him, which he needed to move forward from.
However, the instant he said that, Jonah's visage twisted into such anger and darkness overcame his eyes that Kylan gulped, taking a step back as a shiver ran through his spine. Jonah violently widened his arms, "Why are you being a little bitch, Ky?"

Jonah rapidly nodded his head, "You want to be with me so bad, but you're not willing to talk to me about your issues. That's not how a relationship works. We need to talk about our differences so we can fix them and move on. You're being immature, and frankly, it's pissing me off."
Kylan scratched the back of his head, and after a short sigh, he said, "I'm sorry."
"You know I hate when you apologize," Jonah replied quietly, his tightened face softening as he stepped towards Kylan.
"It hurt me when you said you were ashamed of me."
"That's not what I meant, Ky. I like you. You know that."
"You said it," he breathed, "so now I don't know what to believe."
Jonah shook his head, stepping towards Kylan until they were near enough that one more step would be considered hugging. He placed his finger under Kylan's chin and raised it, his eyes behind his large glasses staring back at him, "Kylan, I meant that I'm ashamed of me. You know how being gay is looked upon. You cannot expect me to be proud and happy when I am still trying to figure out what is going on. If I were ashamed of you, I would have never brought you to the movies in public. I would have denied Ashley's tweet and stopped hanging around you at school altogether. I'm not ashamed of you Kylan, I like you, so can you please just...." he bit his bottom lip after a sigh and said, "can you please just trust me on that one?"
Kylan stared at him for a moment, and it was clear that Jonah had been worried about losing him. His feelings were real, and he leaned in, placed his forehead on Jonah's chest before whispering, "Alright."
Jonah wrapped his arms around him, squeezing him into a warm embrace before pulling away and saying, "Now I'm mad at you." "Wait, what?"
"You ignored me the whole day Ky," Jonah teased, marching towards the door, "so I'm not showing my affection towards you for the whole day tomorrow."
Kylan pursed his lips, crossing his arms, "That's not fair."
"You deserve it," Jonah laughed before exiting the classroom.
