The Earth Shifter

Chapter Chapter Eight

A beam of light was starting to make it’s way towards my life.

I looked at professor Hendrix in disbelief.

“We were already looking for work,” I informed him. “But I’m sorry, which one do you want to offer a job?” I asked.

“All of you actually, even the young one.” He said. And all of us looked incredibly shocked. Is that even possible?

Erik seemed to get annoyed from the way that the professor described him as ‘young’ even I did. We don’t seem like a bunch of ninety years old people with limited sight and wheel chairs.

At that moment a woman came walking behind professor Hendrix with a very good looking black suit and her hair made into a beautiful soft dark brown curls. She looked really professional.

“Hi, I’m professor Allesandra and professor Hendrix would be my husband,” She introduced herself briefly. She also said that she was working in the geology field, then the professor gave her the look that she should stop talking so she took a step backwards and stood quietly behind him. I got to say she’s a very obedient wife. If I ever got married I will definitely still be having my strong rebel character.

“I heard you talking about finding yourselves a job back at the restaurant. Me and my wife were sitting right behind you. And I admit I was surprised myself. Because I was looking for a whole team with all the fields I needed but the only condition was all of the team must be young. I gotta say finding a young man or woman who actually wants to work these days is quite a challenge,” He said emphasizing more.

“Quit babbling. Get to the point.” Erik said impatiently and that gained him a nudge from his sister’s elbow for being rude and impolite.

Professor Hendrix didn’t seem annoyed from Erik. However, his wife professor Allesandra looked like she could rip Erik’s head from it’s place in one swift move.

“Alright, so there’s an island which doesn’t appear on the radar or from the satellite photographing. But we have our reasons to believe that it does exist. And I was gathering a team of young researchers and scientists to go for that special expedition.” He said easily. If we were surprised before then you can multiply that with hundred times now.

“Is there a company sponsoring this expedition?” Aaron asked.

“No.” Alessandra answered. But her husband shot her a look so she looked at the ground with an apologetic expressions and hint of fear.

“Why?” Aaron asked.

He then looked to Aaron and answered him:

“We have our reasons not to involve any companies with our business.”

“What about the salary?” Lilly asked him. And he told her a big number compared to our average jobs. I’m sure that my eyes were twinkling. All of my problems are finally going to be solved.

“And I would rather not go into anymore details now till you tell me if you’re in.” He said smiling.

“What are you talking about? Of course we’re in,” I said without a second thought. And all of my friends and Aaron looked at me as if I’ve grown a third eye or something.

“Uh... We’d rather have our time to think and study your job offer, but thanks anyways” Aaron told the professor. I gaped at him would they really let an opportunity like this slip from their hands.

The professor’s face fell down with disappointment.

“Alright, then I shall be going now and give you all the time you want,” The professor said calmly with a very noticeable fake smile and started to search his jacket pocket.

“Sure.” Lilly exclaimed giving me the we-should-go-now look and I chose to ignore her.

The professor whispered something to Allesandra when he couldn’t find what he’s looking for. She quickly opened her elegant brown purse and took out a white card and stepped forward to give it to me.

I took the card. A phone number and an Address were written on it.

“Thanks.” I said happily.

“You’re welcome. We’ll be waiting for your call when you make your decision,” Professor Allesandra told me.

“Sure. We should be going now,” Aaron said and with that, they all started walking. I was still standing there. I didn’t want to leave this opportunity. I must do something.

“Come on, Amber.” Erik shouted from behind and came back pulling my arm. I resisted for a second but then surrendered.

I don’t want to do this, but I won’t sleep till I contact these two again.
