The Chronicles of Moon

Chapter 39

Disappearing Moon

Moon could swear she heard Colin growl outside the door, and she giggles a little to herself.

That was a bit mean. Kiara can’t hide the humor in her tone as well.

It was fun, though. Moon smiles wider.

Moon looks around the room to find it is very similar to the room she stayed in before, only larger. The lounge by the window looks like the perfect place to read. She can see her bags tucked away in the closet and the boxes stacked neatly near the door. She thinks about unpacking things, but the smell of food has her attention.

The small table by the lounge has fruit and some sort of sandwich. It smells like ham, and Moon is happy to find she is right. She feels like she’s getting better at all of this wolf stuff. Kiara laughs at her, but she isn’t talking nearly as much now.

Moon eats and showers, going to the closet to find her clothes. She rummages through the bags and finds her favorite jeans and yellow sweater. She runs her fingers through her hair and scrunches the curl back into it. Her hair can never decide whether it’s curly or straight; Moon gave up trying to figure it out long ago.

She starts finding ways to distract herself when she looks at the clock to see dinner is still hours away. She misses Colin, and she can feel his absence. She is not going to let herself go and find him as much as she would like to. She knows he has things to do, and she doesn’t want to seem desperate already.

Unpacking some of her clothes and a box of her things only kills about thirty minutes, and she’s bored. Moon messages Ben to call her, but he hasn’t. She wants to talk to him about her wolf and what Gramps may have done and why.

This is dull. Kiara only says what Moon is feeling.

Tell me about it. We still have forever before dinner. Moon lays down on her back. She had been sitting on the floor looking in a box of her things, wondering what was worth unpacking. She knows this won’t be her room forever. Moon stares at the white ceiling feeling bored, frustrated, and lonely. Looking at her phone for the millionth time just to see one minute has passed since the last time she looked at it.

“That’s it. I can’t sit here anymore.” She huffs, hitting the floor with her palm and pushing herself up.

Great, I agree entirely. We should go exploring. This will be our pack, and we should know where everything is. Or we could just go find our mate. Kiara is wagging her tail happily, but Moon can tell she is tired, which worries her.

“Sounds good to me, so long as we are back in time for dinner, and we won’t be bothering Colin.” Moon shrugs. She doesn’t notice that she left her phone sitting on the floor as she leaves the room. She was too distracted by the tired wolf in her head and the thought of getting out of the stuffy room.

Colin is stuck making calls and checking all of his so-called alliances. So far, all of them have assured him that they are still on his side of things and that dealing with Caleb is the last thing they want to do, but Colin still feels uneasy. He knows how manipulative his brother can be, and Colin doesn’t want to leave anything to chance.

Speaking to Ben and learning that everything is still fine and most of the pack has left or will leave in the morning sets some of Colin’s worries at ease. Ben had mentioned that he was trying to get into Alpha Mark’s old room, but he couldn’t. Moon had locked the door and hidden the key after Mark died, and the door was standing up to the heaviest blows from the large Beta. Ben thought there might be something in there that could help Moon. Mark was known to keep journals, and none were in the office, so they must all be in the room.

Colin files the information away in his mind thinking Ben is probably on to something. He will need to learn what Moon has done with the key. Thinking of Moon led his thoughts down a rabbit hole. Soon all he is thinking of is her, she had kissed him, and while it was nothing but an innocent peck, it was more than enough. He wanted to chase her into that room. Colin sat smiling to himself, glancing at the time.

There is still an hour before dinner, but he is done for the day, and he wants to find Moon. He misses her, and spending more time with her is all he can think about anyway. The cold shower he took before going to his office did little to help cool him off. She is in every thought, and he can’t stop thinking about her.

Colin makes his way to her door, and he can smell her faintly in the hall. It brings a smile to his face. He knocks on the door, and there is no answer, so he tries again.

“Moon?” Colin says to the door. Normally Colin would just let her be, but after everything that has happened, he can’t stop the panicked feeling rising in his chest. He opens the door to see the open box half unpacked and her phone sitting on the floor.

Somewhere between the panic and the rage, he feels that something may have happened to her. He picks her phone up off the floor and sees the missed message from Ben. Colin is full of panic. She has been gone for hours. How is that even possible?

Colin is breathing hard as he links Chris. Have you seen Moon? He barks, not caring if he sounds threatening.

No, Chris is quick to reply. I thought she had gone to her room.

So did I. Colin growls is concern has led to full anger, and he can’t think straight, thinking something may have happened to her.

“Whatcha doin’?”
