Chapter 18
Chapter 18
What Ernest did had both pros and cons.
“Ernest, this is not happening again. You can’t let your subordinates overwork, as this can easily lead to work–related deaths!
I don’t want there to be any negative news about the company.” Joshua said.
1
“Mr. Melendez, 1 understand. I will make things right in the future,” Ernest replied, immediately feeling relieved.
It seemed like Ernest didn’t have to fear for his life anymore..
Being clever, he also picked up on an important piece of information.
At that point, Joshua continued calmly, “Since Christy is a good employee, we should give her a raise! We don’t need to increase it too much since she’s still new, so let’s temporarily adjust it to 30,000 dollars.”
Ernest almost lost his balance upon hearing that.
Thirty thousand dollars a month was too outrageous!
It was equivalent to the salary of a professional manager!
Ernest could only nod repeatedly in agreement, thinking to himself, “Christy is really an extraordinary woman. She has only been in the company for less than two days, and Mr. Melendez is totally smitten with her and is offering money to her…
After leaving Joshua’s office, Ernest felt like he had lost several pounds because of the scare. His entire shirt was soaked in
sweat.
Upon returning to his own office, before he could even calm down, he urgently called Christy in.
Christy originally thought that Ernest was going to confront and dismiss her, but to her surprise, Ernest suddenly squeezed out a friendly and warm smile, which seemed phony in Christy’s eyes.
Ernest said to Christy,
“Christy, good news! Your probationary period is over, and the company is officially hiring you. Because you have performed extremely well, the company has decided to give you a monthly salary of 30,000 dollars, as well as benefits such as social insurance, annual leave, full attendance award, year–end bonus, and subsidies. You can think about it.”
Upon hearing that, Christy was stunned.
Seven thousand a month?!
As a mere graphic designer, the salary for this position couldn’t possibly rise to that high even though Stellar Group was a giant company.
$8,000 was extravagant, $16,000 was too much, and $30,000 was simply unreasonablel
The first person she thought of was Joshua!
Only that man had such an overwhelming ability and could do such things!
After experiencing the outrageous work dinner Joshua had arranged for her last night, Christy didn’t doubt for a moment that Joshua was using money to flaunt himself in front of her.
Why was he so desperate to squander money on her? Did he really see her as prey?
Seeing Christy’s expression, which was a mixture of shock, anger, contemplation, and resentment, Ernest’s expression was just as incredible.
For ordinary employees, hearing that their salary was raised to 30,000 dollars would normally result in ecstatic reactions.
What was up with Christy’s expression?
Ernest began to speculate in his mind.
“Once, there was a happy woman who had a fight with her handsome and wealthy boyfriend. Then, to apologize, the boyfriend sent her a small gift, but the woman thought the boyfriend was insincere and displayed a look of disgust.”
Christy’s expression told Ernest that it was the case.
“Christy, you truly are Mr. Melendez’s woman. Why were you so low–profile and didn’t tell me? You nearly ruined me!” Ernest thought.
“Christy, are you
dissatisfied with it? This offer is truly generous. Won’t you reconsider?” Ernest saw that Christy didn’t react immediately and was afraid that Christy might refuse and resign, which would make it difficult for Ernest to explain to Joshua.
“There’s nothing to reconsider, of course. I’ll take the job!” Christy readily agreed.
Chapter 18
Though Christy hated Joshua, she didn’t hate money.
She was working legitimately for her pay, not receiving it for free, so why would she feel embarrassed about it?
After another grueling day, she was almost poor. Christy had two children to support but she had less money in her bank. account. If she could get a higher–paid job, she could afford to send her kids to a good school and improve their lives. If she scrimped and saved, maybe she’d even be able to buy a house the following year and not have to depend on others.
She had a beautiful vision of the future.
When hearing Christy agree to stay, Ernest breathed a sigh of relief.
Remembering how he had intentionally made things difficult for Christy the day before, Ernest was afraid that Christy would hold a grudge and speak out against him in front of Joshua.
Hence, Ernest quickly added, “Christy, the task I assigned to you yesterday was indeed very difficult, but you didn’t disappoint me. Doesn’t the fact prove that you are an outstanding talent in multi–field? Pure gold does not fear furnaces.
Haha…”
Ernest didn’t look in the mirror, or he would see how phony his smile was.
Ernest was glad that in the whole company, only he knew about Christy’s relationship with Joshua.
It meant that he held the key to a promotion and a raise!
If he pleased Christy, Joshua would be pleased.
Why would Ernest not work harder?
Faced with Ernest’s ingratiating smile, Christy once again felt speechless.
Ernest changed his mind so quickly that it was hard for anyone to keep up with him!
If Christy had known that Ernest had misunderstood her as Joshua’s girlfriend and was actually looking after her, she would have been disgusted at that moment.
That day, Christy had a peaceful day.
After work, thinking of the two cute kids at home, Christy’s heart felt warm, and she couldn’t help but quicken her pace as she walked out the door.
Joshua happened to be driving by.
Seeing Christy’s happy walk, Joshua thought to himself, “Christy must have been overjoyed by the raise!”
In order to give Christy an opportunity to thank him, Joshua pulled up in his cool car directly in front of her and intercepted her.
Joshua rolled down the car window and looked at Christy with his cynical eyes.
His profile had been flawless, and the luxury car had accentuated his elegant temperament perfectly. He arched his eyebrow, smug, as if he were an emperor ruling the world and Christy was his queen.
“Are
you satisfied with your income? Shouldn’t you thank me, your benefactor?” Joshua asked with a smile.
“Oh, Mr. Melendez, thank you so much,” Christy had replied flatly, and then she asked,
“Mr. Melendez, why did you give me a raise?”
“I just fulfilled the wish of a selfless and talented good employee,” Joshua answered with a mellow smile.
Christy was stunned for a moment. She remembered she had actually said those words to Joshua before. She just vented her anger at that time, and she didn’t expect Joshua to really give her a raise!
She could accept the high–paying job. After all, she would not be taking Joshua’s money for nothing and would put in the corresponding labor. Christy warned herself not to be tempted by money and lose herself.
So, she remained calm.
Yet it was definitely not the expression Joshua expected.
If it were any other woman, she would have already thrown herself into his arms….
Joshua suddenly felt a bit discouraged.
The girl ignored him as always!
Wasn’t he charming enough? Was she blind?
The kiss flashed repeatedly in his mind.
Her sweet lips and fragrant and soft body were so memorable.

That feeling deepened in Joshua’s mind time and time again.
