Chapter I’m Asking You To Help Me
I walked through the tree line and came face to snout with his astonishing grey wolf. His eyes were narrow and I knew from his expression he was pissed even though he hadn't made a sound yet.
“I’m back.” I said shyly looking down at his humungous paws.
He obnoxiously blew air out his nose, sending dirt flying all around me. I shielded my eyes from the particles but inhaled and choked on the dust.
When I looked at him he was smirking and I said, “I'm happy to see you too!”
He snarled at my response but the annoyed she-wolf inside me rolled her eyes. He stepped forward and inhaled deeply at my neck and the tingles from his soft fur brushing against my skin sent me soaring. His closeness only confirmed the inevitable, my heat was nearing sooner than I thought and there was no way I could resist it.
Within seconds he was standing naked before me with a dark, foreboding look that made me shiver. I took a few steps back making him cock his head when he turned around and reached behind a tree grabbing a pair of shorts and sliding them on.
“Why are you here Red?”
“I just came here to talk, that's it.” I said as my voice cracked.
“Did you now? And would this have something to do with you leaving and not telling anyone?”
“I didn't think you would mind, since you said you didn't want to be involved in my drama.”
He crossed his arms over his chest and said “So is this going to become a regular thing? You just taking off without a word?”
I hadn't realized how much leaving would affect him but apparently the mate bond was more powerful than I thought and even though he didn't want to, he felt everything I had been feeling for the past two days.
“I'm sorry Bishop but I had to get answers from my parents about issues that were occurring in my pack.”
“You mean the pack you ran away from a few weeks ago? Tell me, just what is it that made you leave?”
I drew in a deep breath and closed my eyes and when I opened them he was still standing in the same spot waiting for me to reply. "Yes it does and I need your help."
He shook his head and said, "No, Red. I'm not getting involved in someone else's problems. I have enough to worry about around here with the prowlers and trying to keep my pack from imploding, I can't help with your families issues too."
"I don't want you to help me fix anything." My response was short and stern.
Why would he assume that just because I asked for help that it meant I needed him to swoop in like the gallant Prince and save the day? Why does every man think I need their protection?
"So why do you need my help?"
"My father has been training me to take over the pack since I was 19 but the council is still living in the past and they do not want a female Alpha, despite all of the qualities that I possess to run this pack. That is why I need you to teach me everything you know about being a good Alpha. I need to convince them I am the best choice and that I can run it as good as any man can."
"And just how am I going to teach you how to be a good Alpha when I'm not one?"
His words cut deep and I couldn't believe how little confidence he had in his abilities. He was deceived by his mate and rejected her but that didn't make him a bad leader, if anything it proved just how dedicated he was to his pack that he would banish his own mate, who was an evil person, to protect them.
"Bishop, you did what you had to do to defend your pack, to keep them safe from your cursed mate you didn't abandon them. And from what I saw when I was there, they still believe in you and respect you. They are hurting because you aren't there not because of your actions. A pack needs a leader who will risk his life for them and that's exactly what you did."
He turned away from me and stared into the woods. "Why do you have so much faith in me? You don't even know me, you don't know all the bad things that I've done."
"You were hurting no one expected you to keep it together. So what if you did some bad things, everyone has regrets. What counts is how you lift yourself up off the ground and keep going."
"Meet me tomorrow, right here." Then he shifted and ran off into the woods.
My chest filled with pride as I watched him disappear into the thick brush. I knew pushing him to help me would make him reevaluate his own choices and then maybe he would return to his pack for good. I could tell they were hurting just as much as he was and without him they were lost.
I returned to Silver Raven just as breakfast was being served. I walked into the dining room where I saw they newly acquainted mates snuggling up at the head of the table, my aunt and uncle watching happily as the couple took turns feeding each other little bites of food. Mik and Kam were laughing and talking as they waited for their food. I couldn't remember the last time I had ever seen so much happiness and love all in one room but when I was here I was surrounded by it.
"Em, you're back!"
I smiled as Kam pushed out the chair next to her and patted the seat for me to join them. I walked over and sat down as they picked up their conversation where they left off.
"So Em, what would you rather? A cheeseburger with all the toppings and fries or a room full of cheeseballs?" Mik asked as shoved a forkful of eggs into her mouth.
I tapped my finger against my chin and said, "That's a tough one because you both know I'm down for a good burger but on the other hand, jumping head first into those yummy cheesy balls of goodness. I don't know girls that's a tough one."
"Cheeseburger!" They both said in unison as I said "Room of balls."
We all cracked up and for the first time in a few weeks it felt so good to be carefree and goofy. I knew it wouldn't last because once I became Alpha I wouldn't be able to spend as much time as I wanted to with the girls, especially since they would be staying here in Tennessee with their mates and I would be in Georgia, by myself.
Her second heat! I can't wait, they need some more physical interaction.
Ember sure has a way of getting under Bishop's skin! But it's true, he needs to go back to his pack and make amends with his members, they need him back, and I have a feeling she will help with that.
If she goes back to Georgia, Kam and Mik won't let her go without them, we all know that!
