Chapter Good Advice
After he disappeared into his office I started slicing the egg and delicately placing it into my mouth followed by a grape as I watched Naomi's jaw drop.
"I knew I liked you." She said with a smile.
"Sometimes you have to act to get what you want."
"And acting like a brat works?" She said with a smile as she crossed her arms over her chest and leaned against the island.
"Hey however I decide to get his boxers in a knot is my business but you need to know how to make a man think he's winning when really you're laying the ground work for your future victories."
She lowered her head and nodded and I wasn't sure why she had suddenly shut down but I needed to change the subject and fast because I was not someone who needed to be giving her any advice especially based off my own personal experiences.
"Seriously though, Naomi this is the best omelet I've ever had and the tomatoes and spinach give it a great flavor."
She smiled and began to clean up the kitchen as I quickly finished my meal and handed her my plate. I walked towards his office wanting to turn around and find out what I said that made her feel bad but I knew if I didn't follow Bishop's command I would be in a world of trouble.
"Did you enjoy your breakfast?" He said with a smirk.
I gave him a how-did-you-know look then stood next to him. My acting needed work because he saw right through my facade! Damn, he's better than I thought.
I smiled slightly and said, “Whatever do you mean, mate?”
“Oh Red. I already told you, there is nothing you can get past me.”
He took a seat in his office chair and began going through some papers that were in a pile on his desk. With every passing second his eyebrows knitted together and his lips curled and I was certain whatever he was reading must have been bad.
"Anything interesting?"
"Not really, just some reports about random attacks on humans."
"Animal attacks?" I asked even though I wasn't sure I wanted to know the answer.
"Worse. Vampires."
The room suddenly became cold and my skin started crawling just from the word. Why were these vile creatures still in existence? All they ever did was drain innocent, unsuspecting people of their blood to sustain themselves just enough to skip to the next one and repeat the vicious cycle. Sure every now and then they would create a new one but they never did any good, instead they turned them into blood thirsty monsters and our number one enemy.
"Why?"
"They must be tracking one of their kind."
Somehow I knew who he was referring to even if he didn't have to say it. He rejected her and she was still causing problems but I wasn't going to let that stop me from making him see how much better I was than her. I would never betray him and I had this time with him to show him that but what would happen when I went back home?
The thought of leaving hurt so bad but I needed to prove to my father and the pack that I could be the best leader they ever had, that I could change things and make us better if they just gave me the chance.
"So what are you going to do?"
"Nothing. Keeping the humans safe isn't my job." He threw the papers down and pushed himself away from his desk then stood up and started walking towards the door.
"What do you mean? No, they aren't our responsibility but isn't keeping werewolves and vampires a secret reason enough? What happens if people start going missing or someone sees this happening and our whole world gets revealed?"
"Red, we have existed for hundreds of years and haven't been discovered yet. Now drop it and let's go, we have work to do."
He stormed out the office and down the hall while I stood there trying to understand why he was so against keeping things discreet and letting these cold-hearted beings take out more people before they eventually turned and came after us. This needed to be handled and if he wasn't going to do anything then I would make damn sure I stayed one step ahead of them to prevent anything from happening to my pack.
I followed him out the house and to the training grounds. When we made it to the field, there were three groups standing on the sidelines while two males were sparring in the center. Anyone could see they were experts not just from their physique but from their form.
"Philip is one of my best trainers. Every morning the males divide up into three groups, future warriors, training guards and beginners. Each and everyone will learn the same skills but my warriors are hand picked from the time they are born and have extra training."
"How can you tell they will make good warriors as a baby?"
"It is my job to know each and every pack members strengths and weaknesses. Baby wolves have very strong intuition but it takes a trained eye to see who will be a leader or a follower."
What he said made sense because even I could tell which toddler would be great academically or athletically, something my father never thought to notice. I spent a lot of time in the early learning classrooms during my early teen years because it was required for every female wolf to learn how to deal with children. I loved being around them, watching them grow into their own personality and how smart they were at figuring things out.
"I never spent time with babies but once they reached 5, I could tell which boy would be a fighter."
"Just the boys?" He cocked his eyebrow at me.
"My pack preferred women in the kitchen, barefoot and pregnant." My tone was laced with hate and I for once I wasn't trying to hide it.
He smirked and said, "And now I see why you want to be Alpha so bad. Just a little advice Red, trying to change generations of idiocy doesn't happen overnight and if your first action as leader is to dismantle the principles that your pack has always known, they will turn on you. Leadership requires trust and if you don't lay down the foundation in the beginning they will never be open to your suggestions."
My heart began to swell with pride at the magnificent man before me, my mate, my companion, someone who showed me support without even knowing my struggles and yet the words he said rolled off his tongue so smoothly that it was hard to believe he didn't trust them himself.
"How can you be so enlightening to others but hold yourself back from your own? You are a great person, Bishop and from what I have seen since I got here, an amazing Alpha. I don't know why you won't come back but if you have any doubt that these people love you, take a look again."
He glanced to his right and for the first time since I came here I saw a twinkle of pride gleaming in his eyes as the entire field stood still waiting for his command. I knew he had his reasons for not returning but I was hoping that helping me would show him that he is exactly what this pack needs. A broken mess and all.
That sneaky little she-wolf. Pretending she doesn't eat eggs just to get a rise out of Bishop. They are so cute.
Isn't Naomi sweet? But I wonder what she's hiding? I feel a special kind of friendship blooming between her and Ember.
Do you think Bishop is ready to return to his Alpha duties or is he holding back for another reason?
