I couldn't help the chuckle that escaped my lips and before I knew it I was hunched over holding my stomach as I laughed hysterically. I had never heard of such an agreement before and I didn't know if I should take him seriously. I mean one minute I'm beating his ass on the battle grounds and the next he's offering to combine our packs and be my mate?
"Can you enlighten me as to what is so funny?"
"I'm sorry, I don't think I heard you correctly. You want me to give over my pack and my neck to you?"
"I'm beginning to grow inpatient, sweetheart." He said in his Alpha tone.
I immediately straightened up and remained still as he marched up to me. My body trembled the closer he got and I could feel his dominance vibrating from his chest as he spoke.
"If you do not take this deal, I will have no other choice but to take your pack over and force you to be my mate."
I gulped loudly as he stood in front of me fuming with anger. I didn't dare look into his eyes as it would have seemed like a threat but instead I gathered up all my courage and barked back. "You will not come onto my land and demand such atrocities. You don't threaten me, Alpha Anderson, and if its a fight you want, it's a fight you'll get."
I turned on my heel and walked over to the door opening it for him. He huffed loudly and walked towards it. He stopped right in front of me and said "This isn't over, sweetheart. When I take over you will be my mate and I will make sure you know your place."
He walked out the door and I slammed it shut behind him. My anger had reached an all time high and I couldn't help but scream loudly. I grabbed the first thing I could get my hands on and smashed the antique crystal vase against the wall. Once I calmed down I went to the kitchen for a broom and dustpan and began cleaning up my mess. One day I'll learn to control this temper of mine.
Just as I finished dumping the shards of glass into the garbage I heard my fathers voice outside the house. I quickly threw everything back in the closet and walked back into the living room to see my parents walking through the door.
My mother looked intoxicated, as always. Every time they went to another pack she would spend countless hours with the other Luna's, gossiping and shopping and drinking entirely too much. To tell you the truth there wasn't one single thing that she contributed to the pack. My father, his Beta and Gamma were responsible for everything and I do mean everything. The women were basically there for reproduction and good looks. In fact my mother barely finished high school when she got pregnant for me.
My father came through the door with fury in his eyes and I knew instantly what he was pissed about.
"Ember Lynn Watson! How dare you speak to Alpha Anderson like that. Get in my office now!"
I rolled my eyes at his question. If he only knew what he was suggesting he would have said the same thing.
"Father..." I started but he cut me off before I could speak.
"I know very well what he was here for and to be honest I'm surprised you told him no. I mean didn't you say yourself that you didn't want to be Alpha?"
"Father what he suggested was that I be his mate in exchange for our pack. I hardly find that a reasonable offer." I said as I sat down on the couch.
"Ember, you know this is a hard decision for me, making you Alpha will cause a lot of strife in the pack but I did it because I had no other option."
My heart dropped as his proclamation. He really did believe I was his only option. I looked at him with hurt in my eyes, I mean I always knew he didn't believe I could do this but for him to actually come out and say it made it more painful to hear.
"You never thought I could do it. Did you?"
"Ember, lets be honest, no woman has ever done a good job at running a pack. The only reason they even remained a pack was because of their mate who took over the Alpha role."
My hands were shaking I was so mad and I could feel my temper beginning to rise to the surface. I stood up and slammed my hands down on his desk then looked him straight in the eyes.
"I will never agree to be his mate just for the sake of your pride. I can do this on my own."
"Ember, I'm sorry but I have to disagree with you. Running a pack is more than just sitting in this office and doing paperwork. It's about keeping the peace between neighboring packs and showing your own members that you have what it takes to lead them. It's about being strong in all aspects not just physically. It takes a tole on you mentally and can break even the most powerful men."
"And you don't think I can do any of that? Who was it that found the the discrepancies in our bank accounts? Who was it that noticed the potential flaws in our border security? Who was it that beat every warrior in this pack on those battle grounds down there? ME! It was me father, so don't sit here and give me that bullshit about me not being strong enough. I can lead these people to greatness and make the whole pack strong, including the women that you say you want to help so much yet you can't even believe in your own daughter to take over for you."
"Ember I don't have time for your dramatics right now. We have had a generous offer that needs to be fully thought out."
"Father, are you seriously suggesting that I do this? That I accept a man that isn't my soulmate just to save face?"
He pinched the bridge of his nose and sighed. "Ember this could be a really good thing for our pack."
"And so could I. Please, just give me a chance, one year and if I can't do the job then I will consider his offer."
"Ember we don't have that kind of time to waste. What if he changes his mind in the meantime and then we are attacked?"
"Father I will not agree to this and if you make me do it, I will leave."
"Ember, you don't have a choice. I'm sorrry but I will be calling Alpha Anderson first thing in the morning and tell him that he has a deal. Now I suggest you accept your fate and be glad that he is giving you the chance to be his mate instead of kicking you completely out of the pack house."
He sat down at his desk and started looking through some papers. I couldn't move, I was completely frozen in disbelief. He was really going to do this against my wishes. I walked out the office with tears in my eyes, and in that moment I knew exactly what I needed to do.
Wow! Who saw that coming? Alpha Anderson wants Ember to be his mate!
