Chapter Thirty-Six | Looking Into The Future

Her reflection felt like someone else was looking back at her. Her brown orbs were a little dull from the stress as she placed her toothbrush down and adjusted her bra for the tenth time.

The pain was getting unbearable while she threw her hair up into the weirdest looking bun she had ever done. Xenia could not be bothered with her appearance while she stood in the bathroom in Vincent’s sweatpants and her favourite hoodie. His clothes were the only things that were able to keep her calm.

Sighing she pulled her bra off from under her clothes and threw it on the floor. The fabric from her shirt hurt her nipples while she flinched from the sensitivity. If this was going to be her entire pregnancy, then she did not want to do this again.

Walking out of the bathroom to find Vincent sitting on the end of the bed waiting for her. Her face pulled in a painful frown as she walked towards him and straddled his hips. Vincent rolled his eyes at her actions but accepted her affection until she grabbed his hands and forced them under her shirt to cup her breasts.

The sparks of their mate bond calming the heat of the pain as she groaned and placed her head on his shoulder in relief. Her hands-on top of his while she enjoyed his touch. The pain was so bad that she felt like taking a knife and cutting her boobs off altogether.

“Why?... I... why?” Vincent spat out, his face turning red while he refused to move. It was not like this was the first time he had touched them, but this was the first time she forced him to do it in a non-sexual way.

“They hurt!” She groaned; her eyes squeezed shut while she tried to concentrate on his touch. “They hurt so bad.”

“And me touching you helps?” He questioned, shuffling a little as she felt him harden. Maybe forcing him to touch her was not the best idea.

“Yeah,” Xenia mumbled, moving down a little so that she does not feel guilty for causing him his own downstairs pain.

He hummed. “Do you also know that we have an ultrasound appointment, and I cannot walk you there with my hands in your shirt?”

Xenia felt her heart stop at his words. The ultrasound was to confirm that she was indeed pregnant and to check to see if the baby was healthy. They will not be able to see anything at all either, but she still felt nervous about it. If something was wrong because of the Wolfsbane in her bloodstream then she will hate herself forever. Knowing that she could be the cause for her child’s health issues hurt worse than her breasts.

“Just hold me for a minute.” She mumbled again, wrapping her arms around him as he was finally able to let her chest go. His hands tracing around to her back as she felt comforted by his hold. She was terrified, not only because she was pregnant but because her life was being threatened. Vincent had two days before a war breaks out and lastly, she feared of losing him.

Vincent rubbed circles on her back, her inner wolf purring loudly while he chuckled. “Do you feel better now?”

Xenia nodded, tightening her hold while she kept her eyes closed. She could sleep in this position, cuddled up in his arms and feeling protected from the world. His hands wrapped around her thighs while he stood, refusing to let her go as he walked out of the room and carried her like a baby.

At one point she felt him kiss the top of her head while his hand was in her hair. His other hand around her thigh and butt for support. Xenia did not care about what they looked like as she felt the breeze against her skin indicating that they were outside.

The walk ended way too quickly as she begrudgingly opened her eyes and smiled at the confused looking nurse that was staring at them. Vincent told her what they were there for before her eyes widened and began to take them to a free room.

Xenia felt herself drifting off again as she felt herself being placed on a bed. The gentle touches of Vincent helping her as she could tell that he was worried about her. But she did not know entirely herself, exhaustion was a foreign feeling to her and being so tired almost felt like a sin.

“How is my happy couple doing?” The evil doctor himself spoke as he came in. A nurse pushing a machine behind him and placing it next to Xenia.

“Tired,” Xenia stated while she tugged at her shirt. “And I’m sore.”

“I will go and get you some pain meds.” The nurse kindly spoke while she took Xenia’s blood pressure. “You will go through this the entire pregnancy. It is just your hormones preparing for motherhood.”

“Well, motherhood sucks ass.” She groaned, getting laughs from the room before the nurse left. “Is there any way to stop it?”

The nurse shook her head. “Sadly, no.”

“But on a better note, we will get to hear the baby’s heartbeat today.” The doctor announced. The nurse left the room while Xenia sat back and tried not to pee herself.

The idea of having to have a full bladder for a simple scan was crazy. Lola tried to reassure her that the scans were not that long, but she had forgotten to mention the waiting in between and the sudden pressure that is placed on your uterus while the doctor looked around on the machine.

Xenia’s face cringing as she was uncomfortable but Vincent’s soft touch against her head was enough to distract her. “Are we just looking for a heartbeat?” Vincent questioned; his eyes trained on the screen.

“Yes and no.” The doctor spoke while he pushed a few buttons. “We are looking for a small embryo, possibly the size of a peanut. From there we will be able to determine whether the baby is healthy from its shape and form. If anything looks to be out of the ordinary, we will need to take some blood samples and run a few tests.”

As he spoke, a second heart began to make itself known. Her eyes widening a little while she tried to find what he was describing but came up empty. The monitor had stopped moving while she frowned in frustration, the two hearts were clear, but she could not find what he was looking for. “Where is it?”

The doctor chuckled, moving his chair forward as he circled on the screen where the baby was. Her eyes were rolling as she had thought it was just a part of her insides. The small dot on the screen moved while she felt Vincent lean in even more. His eyes showed pure happiness and love while she looked up at him.

It was already clear that he loves this kid, and she could not be happier about it. “I will give you two some privacy.”

“Thank you, Doctor Yap.”

Xenia shot her eyes up to Vincent while the doctor left. “His name sounds like a sound rat dogs make!”

“Rat dogs?”

“You know.” She shrugged as she looked back at the frozen screen again. “Those small dogs. They are all rats.”

He snorted while he laughed, his wide smile causing her heart to swell while he looked down at her. “God, I love you.”

“And I love you too.”
