Chapter 27
“Put those crates over there.”
“Ops 3 to 6. Take Gunner unit 3 and 4. Ops 1 and 2 take Gunner units 1 and 2. You’ll be first wave. Flyers! Prepare launch in 30 minutes.”
I’m walking around the warehouse as our army walks through the mirrors with weapons and supplies. They’re ushered out the door once they have instructions. We're bringing everyone, so we're having them all set up in formation in the desert outside the city. I hope Evil Zan is watching because it’s his ass I’m coming for it.
I walk over and join Owen, Rex and Zander.
“You guys ready?” I ask.
Zander pulls out his sword. He holds it straight up. “I’m always ready.” He smirks.
I point to Owen. It’s weird that he wants to be here. Seeing him in a military uniform instead of a suit, creeps me out a bit. “Aren’t you supposed to be headed to Axelridge?”
“I was?” He looks confused and scratches the back of his head.
Zander crosses his arms. “The Alliance meeting?”
He smiles. “Oh yeah…” He shakes his head and throws his hand on his hip. I arch a brow because he’s normally standing like he has a tree up his ass. He chuckles. “I…um…I canceled it…to…be with you guys. I mean…it’s war, right?”
“Right.” I look him up and down. “You really want to do this?”
He runs his hand through his short black hair. He looks overly excited for a guy that barely fights. “It’s kids, man. Nobody screws with kids.”
I tilt my head. “Fair enough. Just remember, you can’t negotiate yourself out of a fight.”
Owen narrows his blue eyes. “I can fight…I think.”
“Why don’t you hang with Ops 12. They’re in the back.” I tap his thick arm.
He shakes his head. “No way. I’m with you guys. Just give me a gun and point me where to shoot it.” He hits my arm back with a little laugh.
I look at my arm and back up at him. My face is full of confusion. “What’s with you? You’re acting weird.”
“I’m not acting weird.” He scowls. “I’m pumped.” He grins and hits my arm again.
“Owen. The only time you get pumped is just before walking into a board room to land a deal. What’s going on?” I cross my arms and stare him down.”
“Nothing.” He leans to me and laughs. “I’m cool, man. I just really want to get out there. Want to blow away some bad guys.” He makes awkward gun hands at his sides.
Now my head hurts. I think its official. Owen Tucker must be on drugs or something. I don’t really hang with the guy. No one really does. He spends way too much time talking about himself and how successful he is. The guys loaded. He has a new chick every night. He also has a short temper, especially to the lower classes. He has no problems in talking you down if you get his latte wrong. He has zero fun. Hardly comes to the bar with us. From what I know, he came without a party bone.
He’s good for Alliance treaties, but a soldier? No fucking way.
“Owen. I’m not dragging your ass around the field. You’re in the back.” I scowl.
“Not cool, man. I’m an Alpha. I hang with other Alphas, right?” He crosses his arms and scowls at me.
I face him and give him a once over. “Since when are you so willing to die?”
He seemed to get nervous. “Well, you know. I think…I’ve been stuck in my office for too long. I want to fight now.”
“Hell of a time to pick a battle, don’t you think?” I arch a brow.
He smiles a smile that makes him almost look like Henry Cavill. “Go big or go home, right?”
I eye him again. Somethings not right, but I don’t have time to pick him apart right now. “Alright…but you stay close. You’re not exactly trained for this.”
“I’ll watch him.” Graham put his hand on Owen’s shoulder. “We got this, don’t we, bud.” He offers his fist.
“Damn right. These Mofos are getting their asses handed to them.” He grins a weird stupid smile. It causes me to pause for a bit because I feel like I've seen that dumbass smile somewhere before.
I shake my head and point to both of them. “Whatever. Just don’t die.” I growl.
“Owen, can I talk to you…over here.” Jake comes up and grabs Owen’s arm.
“I’m talking with the Alphas. We'll talk later.” Owen shakes his arm off and grits his teeth.
Jake glares at him. “No…Owen…now!”
Owen looks between Jake and us. “Ok.”
They walk a distance away and they seem to be having some sort of heated discussion. Jakes arms are shooting up and Owen looks like he’s trying to defend himself. It’s probably something political. Not my animal, not my problem.
I direct the super wolves to join Zander and Jake. With RyCal, they’re our tanks. This side will more than likely have they’re own, we just need to be prepared for any twists they may have in their powers.
As I’m assessing everyone, Carmin joins me. “Alpha 1 is ready for deployment on your orders.”
I nod. “Good. Have them load up and head out. We’ll catch up.”
She nods and leaves.
I check supplies and tech and feel arms snake around my waist. I stop. I stand straight. “This better be the hot blonde I had in my bed last night."
“What?!”
I’m whipped around and hit. “I’m sorry!” I cringe back and chuckle. “I would know my sexy fox anywhere.” I grab Damica’s head and kiss her lips apologetically.
“I have something for you.” She smiles.
My brows go up. “Is it…red…made of silk and lace and oh so tiny?” I grin.
“Not red and lacy, but it is tiny.” She holds up a bullet.
I take it and hold it in my thumb and forefinger. Inside is a clear liquid. My brows come together. “What is it?”
She places her hands behind her back and bounces on her toes. “My venom.” She smiles.
“Cure bullets?” I arch a brow.
“Yep. Now, we only have about 1000 rounds, but they’re making more as we speak. Each one only has a drop in a carrier liquid. It hits the bloodstream and cures who we shoot like Cayden.” She informs.
I wrap my arms around her head. “My beautiful secret weapon. I knew you'd find a way. Now, we need to keep these safe.” I hold it up and tip it back forth, watching the liquid flow around in its glass casing.
“Ok. Now, where do you want me?” She stands with her hands on her hips.
I eye her. “Naked in my bed?”
“Sawyer! Seriously. What are my orders?” She slaps my arm.
I palm the bullet and walk to more supply boxes. “You don’t have any.” I say as I turn away.
“What do you mean? I want to help?” She says behind my back.
“You are helping. You got us your venom, now sit here and let daddy get some work done.” I glance around to her and smile.
She stands next to me with her arms crossed. “I want to fight, Sawyer.”
I stand and mirror her image. “Ok. How many years of combat experience do you have?”
“Um…none…but…” She scratches her hair.
“Can you shoot?”
“No…but…” She blinks at me.
I lean to her. “Do you have a wolf?”
“No…Sawyer!...”
I hold up a finger. “You’re staying here.” I tilt my head to her in a warning glare.
She flops her hands to her sides. “I can’t just sit here, while you’re out there.” She gives me this look of worry.
I sigh and take her in my arms. “Ok. I get it, but baby, I’ve been fighting my whole life. I know what I’m doing. I can’t be worried about you. So please, for me, just stay here. If things go south, I need you close to that mirror to get back. Just. Help organize, ok. You’re a curator. I’m sure your good at organizing people.”
She twists her lips. “Ok.” She mutters.
I find her eyes. “I still love you and love that you want to help. I’m here to help you, remember. I need to concentrate and you, my hot Fox, will be too much of a distraction to do that.”
“I love you too. Just please, come back to me.” She finds my eyes.
I hug her tight and bury my head in her neck. “I'll always come back to you. Don’t you worry your pretty head about that.” I whisper.
She hugs me back. “You better or I’ll kick your but.”
I laugh as I crush her in my arms. Am I scared I made a promise I might not keep? Yeah, but all I know is I refuse to die without at least making her proud of me.
****
We make the two day journey across the desert. I sit on the window ledge as we enter Black Lake.
It’s ghostly quiet. The town may be small, but there’s zero movement. This tells me Evac orders were given.
I link to slow down. Our convoy crawls down the middle of the two lane highway.
I lean on the roof as I study the forest edge on both sides.
My wolf feels it. I feel it too.
They know we’re here.
I throw my fist in the air and link to stop.
‘Link only.’ I order.
I pull myself out of the window, jump to the road and walk to in front of my truck.
I walk a distance with my hands on my hips. My head slowly moving from side to side.
‘Alpha, orders.’ Carmin links.
My brows stitch together. ‘Hold. Weapons at ready.’
I squat down and place my fingertips on the pavement. The slight vibration of trucks hits them.
‘Op3 blockade.’ I calmly link.
My men move like ghosts as the set up barricades behind me.
‘Ops 1 and 2. Front.’
I stand with my hands back on my hips. My one hand on my holster. My finger clicks the snap open.
Not even a bird could be heard as we wait.
My men crouch behind me behind my barricade and arm weapons.
I look into the trees on either side.
‘Ops 5, 6 and Alpha 1. Shift.’ I’m cool as a cucumber. They will not smell my fear.
‘Split two. East and west.’
I hear the wolves shift and move. They split in two and line the forest edges.
I draw my weapon and get down on one knee.
‘3’
I cock my gun and stare down the barrel.
‘2. Gunner 1 light the fuse.’
My eyes fixate on the road ahead.
I hold my breath as I hear the engines.
‘Gunner 1…’
I wait as the tension in the air triples. I slow my heartrate to a close.
I slowly close my eyes and let out a silent prayer. Please, let me make it out of this.
I slowly open my eyes as the army trucks come into view.
‘FIRE!’
Gunner 1 fires off their rockets at the trucks.
Helicopters fly over head and bullets rain down on us and wolves explode from the trees.
The trucks get hit and explode flying into the air.
They land in fire balls.
‘GUNNERS FRONT LINE!’
I stand and start shooting.
Out of the fires, thousands of Falcon run up the road.
My gunners are behind me as we march forward. We empty clip after clip into the oncoming wolves.
The return fire came and we hit the deck. Firing from the ground.
Two men take bullets beside me.
‘WE NEED COVER!’
Gunner 3 launched more rockets. They exploded on the road.
Wolves fought into the forests.
‘SHIFT! SHIFT! SHIFT!’ I order and run for the barricade.
The rest of the units shift and we fire our weapons as giant wolves jump the barricade and run to the now shifting army.
‘S1 and S2 front lines'
Super wolves circle around and hit the battle in the middle of the gap between.
‘Zeta team! Clear a path!’
Zander, Rex and Jake all jump over me with their super wolves.
The helicopters circles around and fire on us again. I duck for cover and watch more of us take bullets.
‘Gunner 5 Take them out!’
I turn and watch the rockets fire from us and fly through the air. They hit a helicopter and it crashes into the forest in a giant fireball.
I duck. “Jesus.” Helicopter parts rain down on us.
‘Ops 1. Let’s party!’
I take off my vest and zip out my uniform. I jump the barrier and shift. Ops 1 wolves are right me behind me.
I get to the trucks and grab the first Falcon I see. I wrestle him to the ground and snap his neck. Then another goes down. Then another. Wolves are fighting around and on top of trucks.
‘INCOMING!’
Incoming?
My wolf stops.
The area fills with a loud roar. It has a little high pitch to it rumbles the ground.
‘You can’t be fucking serious.’
I shift and watch as a fucking T-rex passes through the black smoke of the fires. It starts tossing us aside like rag dolls.
“Fuck me.” I say as I blink at the prehistoric dinosaur.
