Chapter 144 – The Alphas’ Porn Star Mate
"So, that's what you two have been busy with the last few days? Why you haven't been in the pack house at all?" "That and the mission to get Boyd back," Mick said.
"There's a mission to get Boyd back?!" I had no fucking idea, and all I've been doing is sitting in my office, picking out linen samples and going over my budgeting reports. "That wolf had dark magic! Don't you think I could be helping?" "You were asleep for days after helping last time," Miles grumbled.
"Yeah, but you and everyone else survived! If I hadn't been there, where would you be?!"
His eyes narrowed, looking cold again, though his hands were still warm as he held my body. "That's beside the point."
"No it's not!" A panic was rising up in me. "What if someone got hurt?! What if...." I didn't even want to finish this thought. "What if one of you....."
"Baby," Miles held my face between his hands. "It's our job to keep you safe. Not the other way around."
That pissed me off. "Bull shit," I growled. "You want me to just sit here oblivious to everything while you two are doing shit to protect me that could get you killed?! What if something did happen?! Then what? Huh?"
"Calm down," Mick tried to stop my rant with a finger to my lips. I snarled and snapped at it so he jerked his hand back. "We're not telling you this so that you can get mad or worry."
"But, you never tell me anything!" I stressed. "I never know what is going on anymore."
"That's...." Mick hesitated. His eyes connected to his brother's before he said, "I'm sorry, cara mia. We just wanted to protect you. You try to take on a lot of blame, Chloe. You get worked up and anxious, and start beating on yourself." "SO!" My rage was boiling over. "At least I would be aware of what was happening! I'm not some fragile doll, Mick. I grew up a fucking warrior. I had to take care of myself. I'm not as helpless as you both are making me out to be.""
The air was tense, and I was good and furious again. Did they think I was that incapable? Seriously? I fucking SAVED them when shit hit the fan. Even now, I can feel the prickling of magic beneath my skin. I can sense it pumping through my veins. "It's not about you being helpless," Miles said in a soft, airy tone, like silk sliding over a skin. "We don't think you're helpless. We just felt helpless in protecting you."
My anger started to wane as the sincerity shone in his sharp blue eyes. Mick's brow was arched with worry, and I could feel for a split second what they were both feeling.
Fear. Fear of losing me.
Mick smoothed his thumb over my cheek. "When you have been given something so precious, so valuable and perfect, something you love more than anything, even yourself, isn't it only natural to want to hide it away and protect it with everything you can?" "Especially with half the fucking world after it," Miles muttered.
Miles's hands tensed on my body, and I could feel his anxiety.
I understood. I finally could see why they were being such overprotective freaks, hiding me away and keeping things from me.
I understood, but I still didn't agree.
"I'm not weak," I whispered. "I will not break or disappear that easily."
"Even so, if you were us, would you risk it?"
I stared into Mick's eyes, thinking about his question.
I knew the answer before Cortina even whispered it to me. "No, you wouldn't. Because the biggest difference between them and Cameron is that they love you, and you love them back. Fiercely."
She was right. I loved these men, and I couldn't risk their lives either. That's exactly why I don't want to be stuck here in this pack house, guards and babysitters watching me around the clock while they risk themselves for me.
"I'm going to help," I said firmly. "From now on, I want to know everything that is going on, and I'm helping."
They exchanged a worried look, looking like they were about to argue.
"I'm helping! I'm not some weak she-wolf that can't do anything but rely on men."
"No, but you are our Luna," Miles growled, his fingers digging into my sides. "You can rely on your mates and your pack to take care of you."
I felt like steam was about to come out of my ear with this bull shit back and forth. I crossed my arms over my chest, thinking about crawling off Miles's lap to start just knocking heads together, like Lenny said, but then the pool tables caught my attention from the corner of my eye. The corners of my lips lifted in a smirk. "Wanna make a bet?"
Lenny POV
Leaning against the wall, I sighed when I faintly heard Chloe laughing. It got tense there for a second. I thought she was on the verge of leaving again, but thankfully, it took a turn in their favor. Those stupid Alphas. They're so worried about her, they are suffocating her, and they can't even see it.
She's a strong girl though. She sounds like she's handling them well now.
That's how mating should be. Alphas should only be weak for their mate. They'll get there. Even if I have to help them, I'll make sure they get there, so Rodger's daughter can be safe and finally happy.
A scent hit my nose, and I turned in the direction it was coming from. Staring down the hall, I was surprised to see Cindy coming towards me.
"Lenny! You're a hard man to find. I couldn't catch your scent." I sniffed the air and noticed mine and Chloe's still wasn't present. I couldn't even smell the Alphas scents anymore. It's like they were forced away somehow.
It makes me curious how Chloe is managing to do that, especially since she should only have magic that manipulates the earth. She doesn't have enough experience or control to force her hand in other elements yet. I'll have to ask Rodger about it later.
"If you're here, that means Chloe must be in there?" Cindy pointed a finger with a false nail towards the game room. He tried to crane his neck to see in, but he couldn't see much from this spot. Only the first few ancient game machines. "She is, but the Alphas are there too. They shouldn't be disturbed."
"The Alphas?" Cindy's eyes went wide like he was surprised. "Um, both of them? I thought Mick was with Rodger and the others?"
I shrugged. "I guess he came back."
"Huh." Cindy looked deep in thought for a second, staring oddly at the ground. "Okay. Well. Huh. I guess I'll just have to leave them alone then."
"Did you need something?" I furrowed my brows, thinking it odd the way he was acting. "I can mind link Chloe if you need her for something, or Mick."
"No, no." Cindy smiled brightly. "Nonna just had a question about her preferences for music and I thought we could come up with a playlist for the DJ to work with. It's nothing too important. I'll talk to her later. See ya." With that, he left the way he came.
"That was odd," my wolf, Akim, mirrored my thoughts.
"Yeah, but Cindy can be an oddball. Nothing to concern ourselves with."
