The Alpha King’s Virgin by Charmeleon Chapter 14

Chapter 14

“Tell me more about yourself, Raine.” Amaris asked, propped up on his elbow, his fingers tracing lazy circles over my collar bone. “I want to know everything about you.”

“There’s nothing much to tell. You know where I came from. You saw Peter.” I didn’t want to tell him every detail. of how I suffered under Peter’s hands. It would only make him angry.

Just by mentioning Peter’s name, I saw how his jaw tightened.

“He’s not your father, I gather.”

“No, I never knew him. He died before I was born. I was never told how he died.” My mother never spoke about him because it hurt her to remember. “Peter took us in when I was still small.”

Amaris turned my face to him and kissed my cheeks. “I see the pain in your eyes, little one. Tell me what haunts

you.”

“My mother’s death is my fault.” I couldn’t look at him. “I played too far away from the border, and she came looking for me. There were four of them. Rogues.” My voice broke and I couldn’t carry on.

“Raine…” Amaris held me against his broad chest, stroking my hair. He didn’t say anything more and just held me. I clung to him like he was the only thing keeping me from floating away.

After some time, he said, “It’s hard to lose someone you love. But you have to let them go at some stage, and stop blaming yourself, it serves no purpose.”

I sighed. I knew he was right, but Peter had made it impossible for me to forget. Every day he reminded me that I took the woman he loved from him. It didn’t matter to him that I also lost her, my mother, the only person that

loved me unconditionally.

As if he knew what was going on in my head, he said, “Peter will never hurt you again, Raine. I can promise you

that.”

Lifting my head from his chest to look at him, I smiled through my tears. “I know.”

“Now, no more crying.” He wiped my tears with his thumb. “Beta Ross has just linked me that the dressmaker is here to take your measurements for your wedding gown.”

“Oh? But…” Would there still be enough time to make a wedding dress. The ceremony was to take place in five days.

“But what? She is the best in the kingdom. Your dress will be ready on time.” He hovered over me; black locks fell forward to frame his face and I couldn’t resist combing my fingers through it.

“I thought Helen…”

He silenced me with a passionate kiss, one that left me breathless and unable to remember my name. Time seemed to stand still. Nothing mattered except his lips on mine, the feel of his hard body against mine. Too soon

he broke the kiss.

“You are to choose your own dress, my queen. You don’t need Helen telling you how to please your king, do you?” A wicked grin spread over his handsome face.

I felt the heat go to my cheeks. “No…”

Amaris accompanied me to our private salon on our wing where the dressmaker waited for me. Roha and the others were there as well, admiring the fabric samples the woman brought.

“This is where I leave you, my sweet.” Amaris said and kissed me before he left in front of everyone. No one blinked an eye about the king’s public show of affection, for which I was grateful. I was still not used to it.

“Your Majesty, a pleasure to meet you. Come and have a seat. I have some sketches to show you. The king said it was a matter of urgency.” The seamstress was an elderly woman, small in stature, almost delicate. She turned her head to the side to peer at me. “Are you pregnant?”

“What? No.” I was shocked. I didn’t think I was pregnant.

She shook her head, “When a man says it’s a matter of urgency…. Pay me no mind.” She held out the sketches to me, telling me about necklines and tucks and princess darts making my head spin.

“I just want something simple.” I told her.

She looked at me as if I said something to offend her. “Goddess help us! Simple? No, no, your Majesty. Simple simply won’t do. We need you to shine like the morning star.”

I heard one of the girls trying to stifle their laughter. I turned to see Sarah biting her lip. Rona came forward and

cleared her throat.

“If I could help your Majesty?”

I was so grateful for Rona. She had a sense of style which I didn’t believe I had. I didn’t want to end up looking

like a cake decoration.

After a few hours of debating and arguing with the seamstress the dress was agreed upon and we were all

satisfied.

“You’re going to look gorgeous, your Majesty. The king wouldn’t want to let you out of his sight.” Lily ran her hands over the fabric we chose, French beaded lace, chiffon and satin.

“He already doesn’t.” Rona laughed. “We’ve never seen him so happy.”

It made me smile to think that Amaris was happy, and I was the cause.

“He has yet to tell you that he loves you.‘ Tasha piped up in my head.

“He’s getting to know us, Tasha.‘ I silenced her. Deep down I wasn’t sure if what I felt for him was love. I enjoyed his body and the way he made me feel, cared for, special. But love? I guarded my heart carefully.

‘Yeah, he can have our body, but he has to earn the right to take our heart.‘ Tasha murmured and I had to agree with her.

After the seamstress left and my maids, apparently that was what they called themselves, went about their business, I was free to wander about on my own. Amaris was busy and he had yet to show me around. I took my time exploring the hallways, admiring the paintings. Some were landscapes, others looked like the portraits of ancestors, still beautifully preserved. I’ve always liked art and sculptures and there were quite a few of those. I lost myself in making up stories in my head of the past kings and queens of the werewolf kingdom.

“Are you lost, little Raine?”

Stifling a scream, I turned around to bump into none other than Prince Sorin. His blue eyes danced with. merriment at my obvious distress. Holding onto my arms he steadied me before I landed on my butt.

“Sorry, your Highness, I didn’t realize you were there.” How on earth did he manage to sneak up on me without me hearing him? Of course, there was the thick runner along the marble floor which perhaps had silenced his footsteps. He hadn’t done it on purpose just to frighten me.

I scared you. It is I who should apologize.” He still held onto my arms for longer than necessary. “You were so deep in thought. May I ask what you were dreaming about?” The way he smiled at me made me believe he was making fun of me.

“I wanted to explore the castle.” I managed to wiggle myself out of his hands and took a few steps back from

him.

“On your own?” he raised an elegant eyebrow. He was so different from Amaris; it was hard to believe they were twins. Although there were similarities between them, they weren’t identical.

He clicked his tongue, shaking his head. “I see, Amaris is neglecting you.”

“No, no of course not.” I quickly defended Amaris. “He’s busy and…”

“Oh shush! Let me accompany you, dear Raine. We don’t want you to run into trouble, do we?” He linked our arms together, “Don’t look so alarmed. I won’t bite.”

I had no choice but to let him lead me along the passage and to the stairwell leading upwards.

“Where are you taking me?” I was feeling anxious. Amaris had warned me to stay away from Sorin and Helen. But surely, he was being unreasonable. Why would Sorin want to harm me in any way.

“To the tower. The view up there is spectacular. You will thank me, I promise you.” His smile was genuine, and I forced my pulse to return to normal.

The staircase spiraled upwards and just when I thought it was going on forever Sorin opened a narrow door and we found ourselves on the rampart.

I gasped. He wasn’t wrong. The view was breathtaking. One could see the whole of the castle grounds, the sprawling woods going up the mountain and the villages at their foot.

“What did I tell you?” Sorin grinned at me. “Just don’t lean against the walls. It’s a long way down.”

The way he said it made me take a step back instinctively and right into his chest. His arms went around my

waist.

I stiffened. This was not right.

“I need to go.” I pushed at his hands, and he released me.
