Chapter Chapter twenty-four
Evadiene
Fuck him. Really and truly, fuck him.
He was making it so hard to be mad at him, and really what did he have to go on that I knew what I was talking about. We had only met a few days ago and he knew next to nothing about me. I was wanted by the largest mob in my city, and living with him in the middle of nowhere with next to nothing. We hadn’t exactly been given a lot of time to even try to get to know each other.
I took a deep breath, let it ride, and then let it out.
“Fine.” I relinquished the other shoe for him to untie only after I had managed to mangle it into a knot.
I was sure his massive hands wouldn’t be able to get it, and I waited for him to get angry, snap the laces, and promise to get me new ones, but he didn’t. He sat with my foot on his tucked up knees and carefully fed the string back the way it had come until he was loosening each layer and sliding my foot free.
“There you go. Did you find any pajamas with the dress, or would you like another shirt?” He asked, the question more delicate than it needed to be.
I could tell he was thinking like I was, that this could be our first mulligan.
“A shirt,” I confirmed but before he could go I grabbed the front of the one he was wearing.
I undid the top half of the buttons and then led him into helping me take it off. Then sliding off the bed I carried it by the collar to the bathroom.
By the time he came to join me, realizing I wasn’t coming back, I was standing at the sink in his shirt. I opened the collar wide enough to sit on either side of my shoulders, to show the marks he was so focused on, and did up all the buttons I could.
“Evadieeene,” he growled when he entered the bathroom.
I picked up the toothbrush I had been using and started getting ready for bed. “What? I’m doing everything you wanted. Wearing your shirt, showing your marks, getting ready for bed,… what more can I do?” I smiled at him in the mirror and he moved in behind me, wrapping his arms under mine to hold me around the middle.
I watched him take in a big breath, let it ride, and let it out.
His eyes were getting darker, but with his breath in he closed them, and when he opened them again they were back to normal. “Evadiene, you’ll be the death of me.”
He kissed the top of my head and then moved passed me to the other sink to get ready as well. I left the bathroom assuming he would still be a while, but soon after I passed through the door his arms were wrapping around me.
“Covyn?” I asked and started rocking us forward, awkwardly walking with me despite his longer legs.
“I’m proud of you,-“ his words stunned me so deeply that I stopped walking and he bumped against me, “- that man should have never made it anywhere near you but he did, and you proved you’re no one to fuck with.”
He kissed the top of my head again, and whispered into my hair, “my little firecracker.”
We continued back towards the bed where he pulled the covers down for me to slide in. I moved into the middle of the bed and he hesitated, starting to pull the covers back up.
I didn’t roll over as I pat the bed behind me. “Hurry up, it’s cold.”
——
Covyn
I didn’t realize how nervous I was until the relief of her inviting me into the bed sunk in. She was so warm, and she felt like home pressed against me.
I snuck one of the small decorative pillows between the soft pillow of her ass and my cock that wouldn’t listen. Never mind that after I’d bitten her twice she deserved a break from my advances, but I hadn’t been a very good mate this far.
The mark on her neck that I could see was still swollen, and I knew the other one would be worse by morning if left alone. I was immediately glad for the pillow as I started tending to her marks and she backed up against me.
“Hey,” she groaned, meeting the pillow instead.
I kissed the mark. “Sleep love, I’ll roll over with you to get the other mark after this one.”
“I don’t even believe you anymore,” she groaned. “They look exactly the same as when you made them.”
I stopped what I was doing, frowning deeply at her words when I replied, “They shouldn’t. Most marks would have healed overnight.”
She seemed to depress with my comment too. “Is it because I’m not wolven?”
I shook my head, peppering reassuring kisses to her skin. “No, even human mates marks would normally heal overnight. To be honest, I don’t know why they look like they do.”
“Covyn, but I..”
“Sshh, it’s okay. I’ll take you to the pack doctor tomorrow if they still look red. We’ll get you taken care of.” I assured, and she nodded.
I started to lick and suck on the marks gently. With them like this, I looked like an inattentive mate and I didn't know what else I could do.
She started to moan again. "Covynnn..."
"Sshh, you can let me do it or Navi will insist on helping." She halted at the reminder of Navi's way of tending to her and moved her hair away for me.
She fell asleep long before I did, and I was sure it was more from exhaustion than anything else. Her human body was confused by these wounds it couldn't heal and was probably putting more energy than it should into trying.
When I finally fell asleep the dreams of chasing her through the forest returned, and though I slept, it wasn't restful.
-
“Covyn! Covyn let go! Covyn stop!” I was awoke by screams. “Get off of me!”
I heard the bedroom door fly in and my head turned toward it. Only then did I realize I was on my bed on all fours because I was turning my head to look behind me.
Spencer stood in my doorway with four of our guards and they all looked ready to fight, but I could smell my mate and they were not getting near her.

Spencer
I heard the Luna screaming through their broken bedroom and could see the shadow of the metal latches through the seam. She was calling the Alpha’s name but it sounded like she was taking to him.
I heard her scream again, sounding more desperate this time, and I couldn’t stop myself from kicking the door in. Me and four guards were ready to charge in when we saw the Alpha, mid-shift, above the Luna.
Tears ran down her cheeks and she looked at me hopefully. Covyn saw nothing but us in the door of his bedroom near his mate and the trembling muscles of the shift became more violent. If he shifted above her like that the weight of his wolf would crush her. Together we sensed that in this instance our Alpha was the threat and we needed to separate him from the Luna before he killed her.
We fanned around the inside of the room, hoping to get him towards the balcony and outside.
“Covyn! Please stop this.” Her hands bent up to tap him as much as they could with his clawed hands pinning her to the bed
“Alpha!” I called trying to goad him towards me.
I could tell he wasn’t sensing reason. His eyes had turned completely black and our wolves weren’t capable of speaking much that could be understood by anyone outside of our heads.
“You know I’m the strongest one here. Take me and the rest will follow.”
A loud growl rose from him and he launched from the bed towards me. I saw his paw form before he left the bed and Evadiene started to call out in pain before one of the guards covered her mouth.
We couldn’t let his attention wander back to her in this state, especially now that she needed medical attention. I needed to get him outside and away from her so they could take her to the medical bay.
I left an opening for him to tackle me and for a split second I saw the Luna’s eyes turn to panic for me, before we smashed through the wall of windows and onto the balcony. I wished I could pause it all to calm her and remind her that this is part of my job as her personal guard; to put her life before my own.
And I take all my jobs very seriously.
As the Alpha tackled me, I let my wolf take over for a minute, and we tumbled off the balcony into the yard. Before I fell, I see someone pick up the Luna surrounded in their coats so the Alpha doesn’t scent and follow her.
It hurt me that things had been so rough for her, and I fully anticipated being in the medical bed beside her when this fight is over.
On the bright side, if the alpha doesn’t kill me, he’ll probably give me that thank you I deserve
I felt his teeth in my shoulder and shook him off tackling him to the ground. There was no way I was winning this fight alone and then I heard Ellion in my head shifted behind me.
‘What the fuck is going on Spencer?’ He demanded.
‘Alpha’s wolf took over but it’s like he was sleep walking. He hurt the Luna and the only way to get her to safety was to get him outside.’ I explained, moving away from his gnashing teeth again.
‘She hurt? safe?’ He asked and I confirmed both. ‘Fuck, she’s one of the few that could calm him like this. I’m going to grab her pillow, maybe we can pin him and calm him with her scent.’
It was as good of a plan as any.
