Taken by my mate

Chapter Chapter thirty-four

Evadiene

Spencer followed me into the room, which I expected. His steps were much lighter than Covyn’s and when I watched him close the door I saw he had picked up Sequoia along the way. He closed the door gently but I ran over to it, re- opening and then slamming it shut again.

“Ggrr,” I yelled and looked for something to hit but nothing was near enough and the door would hurt.

The moment faded and I grunted again, trudging over to a chair by the fireplace and plopping into it. Spencer joined me, sitting two chairs away and setting Sequoia between us.

“He doesn’t mean it,” he started to say, ignoring my hand that asked him to stop. “He’s seen a lot of different ways that people can get hurt. Being our leader, he has been there at every gym, garage, and shop accident, and they were wolven. He’s worried about you. As a human you heal slower than us… wait.” Spencer drifted off suddenly.

The way he paused and looked away made goosebumps run over my skin. My skin began to tingle like it was cold, or pugged in and I waited like the moments were water I needed to survive. He looked at the fire place, the burnt logs in the hearth little more than sticks.

“The other night, at dinner… I remember thinking it was weird….” He stopped and looked at me. “You said when you were a kid your arm was broken for two weeks.” His eye connected with my so deeply that neither of us could walk away. “That is not a human rate.”

I shook my head. “No.”

“Was the break not very bad? Or maybe only fractured?”

I shook my head. “No it was…

“Broken in two places,” we said at the same time.

He brought his foot up on the chair, his shoes scattered on the floor like he was planning to stay a while. His arm rest on his knee, and then his cheek on his arm as he looked at me. His expression worried me as I could easily see it as being angry, excited, worried, even fucking tired. I couldn’t get a read on him.

He lifted his head and angled it as he looked at me, observing the bruises on my neck and the other random wounds and bandages I’m sure. “That’s a lot faster than any human I’ve ever heard of, but you clearly aren’t healing very fast now.”

I shook my head. “No.”

“Did you misspeak?”

Again I shook my head. “No.”

He put his foot down and leaned towards me. “Evadiene, are you human?”

I felt the relief wash over me like a warm shower, settling the tingle of my skin from my head down.

“No.”

He sat up suddenly. “Really?”

“Yes.”

“really?”

I looked at him now and said incredulously, “Yes?”

“This is wild,” he smacked his knee and sat up. “I’ve been wondering, but Alpha was so adamant.” He turned to look over his shoulder like he was confirming he wasn’t standing right behind him. “Does he know?”

I looked down sadly. “No.”

“Why haven’t you told him?”

“He never asked.”

“Why tell me?”

“You asked.”

He paused and thought about that for a long moment, eyeing me again. “Is that a personal choice or a requirement?”

I thought I would cry and, as I felt a chill running down my cheek, I realized I already was. “Requirement.”

He closed the gap between us in a second and held me, and it was exactly what I needed. The quiet tears fell into his shirt and I held him back. Finally someone was asking the right questions.

I heard the door open and looked up to see Covyn. His eyes locked on my teary face and then who my arms were wrapped around and he started to snarl.

“Does being my mate’s personal guard require you to have your hands around her.” He growled and Spencer released me slower than someone who was panicked or worried.

“I needed a hug,” I blurted out. “I’m still pissed at you and Daley isn’t here. Spencer offered.”

I felt Spencer’s presence shift and knew he was going to say something stupid. I moved to stand in front of him but he was taller than me and it didn’t block his line to Covyn.

“Alpha, ask Evadiene if she’s human,” Spencer said flatly.

“Evadiene?!” Covyn demanded. “She is ‘the Luna’ to you, and who are you to demand something so ridiculous….”

“Alpha, just…”

“You’re dismissed!” Covyn boomed, breaking my heart a little more.

“Covyn please...” I begged but Spencer was already bowing and leaving.

I grabbed the back of his shirt and pulled. “Stop, Covyn we didn’t do anything wrong. Please just listen….”

“No Evadiene, this isn’t a question. I was actually coming to get Spencer anyway. I have something important to discuss with him. I need his help making sure it goes smoothly.” Covyn growled like he wished we had time to talk more but he was in a hurry.

Again, he was in no mood to try and understand me.
