Still alive?

Chapter 9

The next day, waking up in the morning in her room in the student dorm, rolled over from her stomach to her back and continued to lay in the bed. In fact, she had already woken up, but it was hard for her to open her eyes, and so she decided to sleep a bit more. Then she sat in a lotus position. Opening her eyes, she looked at her room.

It would be better if I did not wake up, and continued to see this dream ...” the thought flashed through her head.

She was not in the best mood. For a few weeks after the exams, she was in the so-called anabiotic state. She lost all contact with the world, stayed at home and was sitting in front of her laptop all days long, surrounded by books. Yes, Max had repaired her laptop and gave it back after their last meeting.

Mia was reading the textbooks, preparing for the next exam.

“So, I need to read today to refresh knowledge. How I hate it all. Writing these papers about this and that”, she thought, getting up and out of the bed.

Stretching, she raised herself on tiptoe, to stretch her feet and not to hurt them as she was such a person who can fall and tuck her leg, out of the blue. And then slowly she walked around the room in T-shirt and underpants. She was satisfied with being able to spend the whole day in her room relaxing. Of course, she would like to talk with someone, go to a club, but nevertheless she was also used to reclusion. The days at dorm were very similar, to mix them up, she sometimes had a walk on weekends - it was still, spring, after all and it would be a shame not to enjoy it. But such walks were not so often. All what Mia wanted was to wait until the end of September, when the new school year would begin. Then, this «terrible» stuffiness will subside. In the meantime, every day she was writing a term paper, staring at the laptop. She slept quite a lot, as well.

Mia looked out the kitchen window to find the silence near the dorm. And the Big City life was in full swing at this time. Mia was making toasts for breakfast while scrolling the news on social media.

Meanwhile, in other part of the city, Max woke up in his room. Having troubles opening his eyes, Max then saw the ceiling of his room in front of him. With the same difficulty, he got up and looked around. His smartphone and crumpled socks the floor. His hair was tousled and his eyes were completely vacant. His head hurt; he didn’t want to eat at all.

Suddenly the phone rang.

“Oh God, the trouble is here,” he thought, looking at the telephone. Max did not care about any orders and rules and so, he decided that he would not answer the call at all. The phone continued ringing for about five minutes more and only then went silent.

“Finally,” Max thought. Pain in his head seemed to be gone.

Meanwhile, Mia was lounging about at her dorm room. Though, her thoughts were filled with how to write a term paper.

So, Mia was sitting and doing nothing. Almost nothing, taking into account that she still read a novel for study and watched a few videos on YouTube. At or around eleven, she remembered that she planned buy some food. Therefore, she quickly got dressed and left the dorm room.

She went to a small supermarket, only this time, not the one she was in yesterday. She did all this only for the sake of having fun.

It turned out to be hot outside, which is generally not typical for this time of the year. Usually the thermometer rarely crosses the line of thirty degrees calcium during this period. But not today.

Returning with groceries from the supermarket, Mia got in the crowd of students gathering outside her dorm. And now, Mia found herself in the company of others. It was their usual place to meet and get drunk. There was a barrel where a fire always burned; bricks to put skewers between them and make some BBQ; an improvised table with some cheap wine in the glasses. Without any toast, they drank a glass of wine, and then began to eat. They were bragging about things, joking and making silly photos.

At some point, Mia stop suddenly.

“What am I doing? These guys just want to get drunk on weekends. They have primitive goals that a normal sane person can quickly get bored with. And how person like me, having a higher education and being good at studies, could end up in the company of such people I deserve the best, and shouldn’t vegetate with them,” she thought, holding a glass in her hands and looking at how her fellow students are degrading. At that moment she decided to quietly go to her room and did not expect that such simple decision of her could spark off a wave of unfriendliness.

“I’ll probably should go,” she said and turned around heading to the dorm.

“Wait, why, all of a sudden? - the guys asked.

“I need to study,” she said, and thereby incurred the wrath of all those who were her drinking fellows a moment ago. She felt like accusatory glance they gave followed her till the door of her room closed behind her back.

The phone ringing brought her back to reality.

“Hello Princess,” she heard a familiar voice.

“Hi, Max.”

“How are you? What did you do all day?” he asked.

“Writing term papers and reading books. And you?” Mia asked disinterested.

“I was busy with my startup.”

“Hey, Max, tell me what kind of startup you work on?” Mia asked.

“Well, you know, 30 years ago they said that humanity destroy itself in nuclear war for resources. My startup is aimed to stop that Apocalypse developing a new energy source. Plan, B so to say,” Max said enthusiastically.

“Sounds intriguing.”

“Thank you, I knew you’d like to get to know more about it.”

“But it is impossible, Max. Energetics is too competitive environment,” Mia said confidently.

“Maybe. But my startup will save new energy for all of humanity. This Plan B I am talking about is not a substitute for oil and gas, but only a backup,” said Max as if he was trying to persuade her.

“This idea is crazy, Max.”

“Do you think Musk is crazy too?”, Max asked, a bit staggered.

“No, he’s just a visionist.”

“Well… Mia, actually, I called on a different matter.” How about meeting tomorrow and, for example, taking a walk in the park?”, Max offered on a less strong note

“Sounds good,” Mia whispered with a slight smile.

“Then see you tomorrow, Princess,” he said enthusiastically.

“See you,” Mia answered and hung up.

Without thinking, Mia opened Max’s page. The phrase «The world is not enough» was written in his profile header.

“What a coincidence,” she thought.

Indeed, right now, her favorite song was Garbage’s “The world is not enough”. Mia put on her headphones and listened to this song again.

… No one ever died

Of wanting too much…

… People like us

Know how to survive

There’s no point in living

If you can’t feel the life…

… If we can’t have it all,

then nobody will…

The world is not enough

But it is such a perfect place to start, my love

And if you’re strong enough,

Together we can take a world apart, my love…
