Spirits and Sorrows

Chapter SIXTEEN

Alison walked to Ally’s tent and tapped on the doorway.

“Come in,” Ally called from inside. She sat cross-legged in the corner of her tent, folding her clothes.

Alison walked in and sat down across from her. “I wanted to see how you were doing.”

Ally took a deep breath and set down the shirt she was folding. “Shaken up.”

“Understandable. All of us who were there are.”

Ally was a sorceress with clear ebony skin, bright green eyes, and long wavy brown hair. They’d become fast friends when they arrived in the community since they had a lot in common. Their names were similar and they often got confused whenever someone called out for them.

Ally was skillful in defense magic and was a valuable asset to their cause. She was trustworthy dependable and wickedly smart. She was someone who she wanted whenever they went on a scout mission.

Alison sighed, brushed her curly blonde hair out of her face, and held it away from her neck. It was humid in the tent and sweat dampened her skin and clothes. “We’ve had missions go wrong before but nothing like this. That was the worst thing that’s ever happened to us.”

Ally shuddered. “I can’t believe none of us noticed something was wrong. How did neither of us realize an ambush was about to take place?”

“Kane,” Alison said and couldn’t keep the disgust out of her voice. “His magic. How he’s been able to take over the Eternal World so far. It’s no one’s fault what happened. There’s nothing we could’ve done to prevent this.”

Ally was quiet for a moment. “Do you think the Iron Arrow is real?”

“I’m sure. Peter believes it’s real and I trust his judgement. If he believes it’s real then I believe in it too.”

“Do you trust Hannah?”

Alison pursed her lips as she thought it over. “I don’t know her that well. I only interacted with her once but Laura says we can trust her so we should take her word for it.”

“If you say so.”

“How’s Nick?” Nick was a vampire and Ally’s boyfriend was on the scout mission with them.

“Traumatized. He’s been acting weird since we got back. It’s understandable due to what happened but I can’t shake the feeling something is deeply wrong with him. And it’s more than being traumatized.”

“Like what?”

A bad feeling rose inside of Alison. She had this premonition that everything was about to go seriously wrong.

“When we were coming back inside I could swear his eyes started to glow green. I -”

Alison raced out of the tent without another word, leaving the tent flaps swinging behind her. Ally was calling out behind her but she didn’t stop. She knocked other sups out of the way as she raced to Nick’s tent.

She barged into Nick’s tent and found Nick sitting in the corner, knees pulled up to his chest, hands covering his face.

Alison frowned and stepped forward. “Nick?”

He looked up and her breath caught in her throat. His eyes were glowing an eerie green, the same as other members of Kane’s army.

Before she could react, Nick surged forward and clamped his fangs on her neck.
