Soul Mate: A Novella

Chapter 10

Ch. 10 Samael

Out of nowhere my phone unexpectedly starts ringing and buzzing in my back pocket causing it to vibrate against my ass. Yanking it out, I glance at the screen and see Cassie’s name flash across it. “Hello,” I answer quickly still shocked that she’d be giving me a call. I listen as she tells me to meet her at the Star-Sky venue and that Rim will be waiting for me to take me up to her apartment. I say okay and exit the diner where Khloe had left me sitting in stunned silence. I knew she may have had doubts, but I never thought she’d walk out on me before I had a chance to explain or show her my world, the shadow world. Walking to a darkened alleyway, I step into the shadows for a moment and then step out of them in between two buildings, one of which is the venue.

“Hey Sam,” Rim says as he steps outside the doorway where the steps are that lead up to Cassie’s apartment. “Cassie called me and told me to come over here and then wait for you to show up. She says Khloe is here and that she passed out. I’m not sure the how’s or why’s of what’s going on, but I said I’d be here and well,” he arcs his arm in a swishing motion indicating for me to go up the stairs. Nodding my head, I take the steps two at a time until seconds later I’m standing in front of Cassie’s apartment.

I move aside slightly so that Rim can open the door. He knocks against the hard white wood but doesn’t wait for it to be opened, instead he twists the knob, and we walk inside. I hear Cassie say; “hi Sam,” but I’m too focused on looking around her place in search of Khloe. My eyes finally fall upon Khloe’s limp form sprawled out on Cassie’s couch and I turn a questioning gaze to Cass so that she can tell me what happened.

“She called me upset and came over here to tell me how you’re crazy and need to be locked up in a mental institution because you ‘think’ you’re a Grim Reaper. I told her I couldn’t agree with her on thinking you’re crazy and then explained that I am an angel. She of course thought I was crazy as well and so I showed her my wings. Pretty sure she just got overwhelmed and passed out from shock maybe.” Cassie shrugs her shoulders once she’s done talking, turning apologetic eyes on me.

“O-o-o-o-o-h-wa,” I end the word with more of a ‘W’ sound and then grin. “Well, we can work with that. I’m not sure what I was expecting to see or hear when I arrived, but I can deal with a passed out human being.” Walking over to Khloe, I gaze at her and think how beautiful she is. Lifting her head and a portion of her upper body, I sit down and then gently place her head on my lap, brushing her hair away from her face at the same time. “So, what should we do? Do I try to wake her up?”

Rim sits in the matching recliner before pulling Cassie down onto his lap. She giggles before replying to me, “no, leave her be. I’m sure she’ll come to shortly.” I watch Cassie lean back against Rim, snuggling into his side as he snakes his arms around her waist and nuzzles the side of her neck causing her to squeal and then giggle at him. “Stars above you two, get a room!” I say chuckling at the two of them. I want to tease them further but just then a moan comes from Khloe and then she starts to stir, turning her head left and right a couple of times before groaning and pushing herself into a sitting position.

“Ugh, my head’s killing me,” Khloe says as she massages her fingertips against either side of her temple. Cassie hops off Rim’s lap and dashes into her kitchen reappearing a moment later with a bottle of water in one hand and her other hand fisted closed.

She comes to stand in front of Khloe and I and then sticks her closed fist in front of Khloe’s face; “here’s some Ibuprofen.” Khloe opens her hand and accepts the medicine and water presented to her and then tilting her head back slightly, tosses the orangey-red, circular pills into her mouth followed by a swig of the water.

“Thank you, Cassie, I appreciate it,” Khloe says as she recaps her bottle. Cassie waves her thanks away and then turns to take her seat on Rim’s lap once more. “Alright, since I’ve uh, had a little time to process everything and really can’t deny the physical proof. I mean WINGS! One day I will require that you tell me all about your angelic life, Cassie. But currently I want to know more about this soul mate thing between Sam and I and him trying to figure out a way to become mortal.” Khloe scoots close to my side and clasps her fingers with mine, the purple-ish blue current sparks to life allowing Cassie and Rim to see and bear witness to our connection.

“Wild dude. Your guys’ soul tie is different from mine and Cassie’s. It’s brighter and more electrical... I wonder if it’s because she’s human?” Rim voices randomly.

I stare at him in surprise because I know how intense their bond is so for him to say mine and Khloe’s is stronger than theirs has me somewhere between being shocked and concerned. “Is this something we need to be worried about?” My eyes dart between Rim’s and Cassie’s for a second before I see Rim smiling.

“No, no, not at all. Honestly, I think that your connection is what will help you achieve your mortality.” Rim continues to grin; Cassie follows suit in turn causing me to glance at Khloe and then smiling myself. “Let me reach out to my father and then I’ll meet back up with you, okay?” Rim stands turning and twisting around before depositing Cassie onto her recliner. She looks at him with a pout on her lips but then he tells her; “I should be back here in a couple of hours, sweetness.” Cassie gasps, growls, and then swats him on his arm as he leans into her and gives her a kiss. “I’ll see you all later.”

We watch him leave and then Khloe stands up. “I better get home too. It’s getting late and I don’t want my parents to worry for me being gone as long as I have been.” Cassie stands and gives her a hug. She then turns expectant eyes on me. “Do you mind walking me to my car, Sam?” Quickly I nod my head that I will and say farewell to Cassie before extending my hand out to Khloe. Once our fingers are interlocked, we leave Cassie’s apartment.
