Chapter 1240
Chapter 1240 Evil
"Mrs. Walker, tell me since she refuses to," Alex said to Maria, who was under the stage.
Maria was sitting in the audience quietly. She was quite happy to see Kate in trouble. Unexpectedly, she got involved in this mess.
Alex insisted that Maria explain herself, but she didn't dare to. Now, she was certain that what she had said before was heard by Alex.
Left with no choice, she walked up the stage and glanced at Kate, feeling intimidated. Then, she finally turned to Alex and said respectfully, "Mr. Jefferson, I'm not sure what you want me to say... I-I don't know anything!"
"I heard everything you said previously. Did Kate threaten you to keep quiet? Don't be afraid to tell me everything you know. Even if you don't say it, I'll ask Stanley. There's no point in hiding anymore," Alex said calmly.
When Emmalyn fell ill, Maria began to dislike Kate. However, due to her status as the lady of the house, she had always kept her grievances to herself. Now that Alex was willing to stand up for her, Maria decided not to hide the truth any longer.
"Mr. Jefferson, when you're not at home, Ms. Sutton often tends to give Stanley a hard time. She makes him, a six-year-old child, mop the floor, wipe the tables, and even do the laundry and cook. These chores are my responsibility, but Ms. Sutton wouldn't let me do them. She told me to focus on looking after Emmalyn and that it would be best to ignore her actions and not interfere. One time when Ms. Sutton was in Stanley's room, I heard him screaming that she wanted to kill him... I—"
As Maria spoke, she suddenly felt a chill run down her spine. Thus, she turned around and saw Kate staring straight at her. Kate's gaze was as terrifying as a little demon from hell coming to claim a life, which scared Maria so much that she didn't dare to continue speaking.
"Alex, don't listen to the nonsense this old woman is spewing. I have never mistreated Stanley. I never asked him to do any chores. It was Stanley who insisted on doing them himself. It has nothing to do with me. Why would I harm a sensible child like Stanley when I am a parent too? This old lady is spouting utter nonsense. She is framing me. Alex, you mustn't believe her words," Kate explained as she played innocent as if she was truly being framed.
If Alex hadn't known Maria's character, knowing that she was an honest and decent person who wouldn't lie or falsely accuse Kate, he would have been deceived by the masquerade that Kate put on. "Don't worry about her threats. No one will dare to harm you as long as I'm here. Please, tell me everything else that happened," Alex said to Maria.
Maria looked at Kate with a hint of fear. After all, she had already exposed too many of the evil deeds the latter did. Even if Kate wanted to take revenge on her, it wouldn't make much difference now to reveal another thing she did.
As Maria recalled something, she began to speak. "Mr. Jefferson, do you remember the incident when Emmalyn fell ill?"
Alex nodded when he heard that and gestured for her to continue speaking.
"That day, you asked me what Emmalyn had eaten. I wanted to say that the breast milk was somewhat greenish, but Ms. Sutton didn't let me finish. I wonder if this has anything to do with Emmalyn's illness," said Maria.
Back then, Alex found it very strange that Emmalyn suddenly got poisoned. No one could have tampered with her food or drink, and even now, Alex couldn't figure out how Emmalyn got poisoned. Upon hearing Maria's words, realization suddenly dawned upon Alex that the poison came from the breast milk.
If it's the breast milk, it must have something to do with Kate. How dare she come into contact with poisonous insects. Could she have stolen Insect Codex from my study too?
At that time, Emmalyn's life was hanging by a thread. She could have succumbed to the poison in her body. Alex had made it to Kate that as long as he knew what the poison was, he could find a way to save Emmalyn.
Even under such circumstances, Kate disregarded her daughter's life for selfish reasons and refused to reveal the truth.
She was ruthless not only toward other people's children but cold-blooded toward her flesh and blood. Alex felt that such a person was unfit to be a mother and unworthy to be his wife.
Heather, who sat in the audience, could no longer hold herself back. She was never fond of Kate but had never thought the latter would try to kill Stanley. As Stanley's mother, Heather could no longer contain her anger.
She stormed onto the stage, grabbed Kate's hair, and started to pull wildly. As she did that, she cursed, "Can you be any more shameless and despicable? It's bad enough that you're a mistress. How dare you try to harm my son? I will never let you off."
