Chapter 151 -
Amber quickly said, "You've crossed the line, Asher! How could you say something like that behind her back? Quick, apologize!"
Meanwhile, Asher felt that there was no need for him to apologize because he had simply said something that he believed was true.
When Amber saw that Asher was not bothered, she quickly said again, "Let's see. It's fine if you don't want to apologize. Your punishment is to be our driver. Let's go to a few more places and tire him out. Are you happy with that, Layla?"
Layla snorted coldly without saying a word.
"Alright, alright. It's been decided then. Asher, since you said the wrong thing, you'll have to accept this punishment. You have no right to resist." Amber pushed Asher out as she spoke.
Layla rolled her eyes at Asher before following them.
Originally, she was in quite a good mood. After this however, she was not feeling that comfortable anymore.
Was she really that bad? To think that he would avoid her to such an extent!
"Did you put on some makeup today, Layla? You're so pretty!" When Amber saw that the two of them were not speaking with each other and that it was getting a bit awkward, she then tried to dispel the awkwardness in the air.
Layla pursed her lips before saying, "Are you saying that I look ugly when I don't put on any makeup?"
"Huh?" Amber was taken aback. "That's not what I mean! You're pretty whether you have makeup on or not."
"Naturally. If not, there won't be a lot of men trying to court me."
"Did you find someone you like then?" Amber asked curiously after giggling.
Layla did not know why, but initially, she wanted to say no, instead she said, "Of course. Do you really think that I'm a single lady?"
When Asher heard her, he instinctively gave Layla a glance. She already has a boyfriend?
Amber said with a smile, "You're so pretty and your annual salary is in the six figures. The man that you like must be a very good man."
Layla then said with a tone of certainty, "Of course. He's at least better than a certain someone a hundred-fold." When she said that, Layla intentionally glanced at Asher before crossing the Crawfords' gate with a smirk.
Amber then said, "Asher, someone's talking about you."
"Don't listen to her. She's lucky if someone actually likes her," Asher said as he rubbed his nose. After Asher and Amber had left their residence, Huxley suddenly appeared from behind one of the buildings. His eyes were a bit cold as he took out his mobile and dialed a number. "Help me out with something..."
Asher and Amber did not notice that at all. They brought Layla to the most well-known park in the area.
"Layla?!"
The three of them had just arrived when they heard an astonished cry not far from the gazebo. Asher looked at where the yelling came from and saw several young men and women wearing branded clothing there.
The handsome young man who cried out had a svelte build, similar to Asher. However, his skin was very pale, paler than some women even.
"Layla! I didn't expect to see you here. What a coincidence. These are..." The young man came over and asked with a smile.
Amber then said, "I'm Amber Crawford. This is my brother."
"Hello. I'm Layla's friend, Greg Johnson. My dad is the chairman of Southern Cross Group, Davy Johnson," When he said that, there was a hint of pride on his face.
Asher knew about the Southern Cross Group. It was a well-known real estate company in Alexandrius. As Layla was the manager of a recruitment agency, Greg must be one of her clients. When Amber heard his tone, she instantly lost any good impression she had of him. It was as if he was worried that they did not know that he had a rich father.
Asher did not pay him any heed though. There were a lot of different types of people in this world. One would get used to it. He then extended his right hand and said, "Oh, you're the scion of the Southern Cross Group. Nice to meet you."
Greg merely smiled and did not accept Asher's handshake.
That made Asher feel very awkward. His right hand was hanging in the air for a few seconds before he had no choice but to take it back.
When Amber saw Greg showing Asher so much disrespect, she was starting to get angry. Just as she was about to say something, Asher then said with a smile, "Let's go over there and wait for Layla."
Amber gave Greg a glare before walking away huffing and puffing. "That Greg Johnson is such a bother! Is being the Southern Cross Group's scion something to be proud about?"
"He should be Layla's client. Don't get her into any trouble," Asher said.
Greg gave Asher a look. Even though he looked like he was being polite, Greg could feel a sense of pride coming from him. He then asked, "Which household is he from, Layla? He's a bit arrogant."
Asher was right. The Southern Cross Group had always been one of Layla's biggest clients. As Greg was Davy's son, Layla did not want to offend him too.
"He's a cousin of mine. That's how he has been since he was little. I shan't disturb you anymore, Mr. Johnson. Goodbye," With that, Layla was going to chase after Asher and Amber. However, Greg said with a smile, "Let's take a walk together since it's such a rare occasion for us to meet. My friends' families are all in the real estate business. Maybe there's a chance for you to work with them in the future?"
Layla frowned and hesitated.
At this time, Greg then waved at the young people and said, "Let me introduce a friend to you all. This is Layla Knight, the manager of Medea Recruitment Center. She's young, beautiful and talented. If you need to hunt for someone with a particular talent, do contact Ms. Knight." "Now that you've said that, we'll definitely do as you ask! Haha!"
"Mr. Johnson, you said that you're in love with a beautiful woman. Don't tell me it's Ms. Knight?" "A handsome man and a beautiful woman; a match made in heaven!"
When Greg heard those words, he simply smiled and did not explain anything. That alone proved his stance toward this.
Layla herself knew quite well what Greg's intention was toward her. However, she had no feelings for him at all. She then said with a smile, "Mr. Johnson is the scion of the Southern Cross Group. I'm not worthy of being his girlfriend, but being a friend is fine."
"Layla, you don't have to put it that way. When I make friends, I don't judge them by their background."
The reason Layla could reach her current position was all thanks to her own ability and hard work. It had nothing to do with her family background. Not to mention that when Layla was at work, she intentionally kept her own identity under wraps. No one knew that she was a scion from the Knight family.
Greg did not know much about Layla's background. He thought that Layla was just a woman from an ordinary family; that was why he said that. His intention was to show how good of a person he was. To Layla however, all that was just a joke.
When Asher saw Greg and the others walking over together with Layla, he then realized what Greg's intention was. He could not help but smile bitterly. Could it be that Greg was the man that Layla said was a hundred-times better than him?
"I heard from Layla that you're her cousin? Where are you working right now?" Greg said with a smile.
Asher then blandly answered, "I'm unemployed."
"Ah, it's quite difficult to find a good job nowadays. But since you're Layla's cousin, it shouldn't
be hard for her to arrange some work for you. If you don't mind, you can look for me at Southern Cross Group," Greg replied.
"Oh, sure." Asher nodded.
Amber could not bear it anymore and asked, "Mr. Johnson, how much are you willing to pay my brother? Is it annual? Or monthly? His annual salary has to be in the six-figures, right?" "Six-figures?!" Greg's mouth twitched unwittingly at her words. She must be joking. How many people in Alexandrius had a salary of six-figures? How shameless could she be, asking for a salary at that level when Asher had shown nothing?
When Amber saw Greg's embarrassment, Amber felt much better. "You cannot even pay him six- figures, and you want to employ him? You're dreaming! Come on, let's go this way." With that, Amber dragged Asher by the arm and left.
