I soon left the hospital, and my parents took care of all the arrangements for Alex’s funeral.

During this time, Rick didn’t even bother to make a single phone call.

On the day of the burial, it was pouring rain, the sky a gloomy gray, reminiscent of the day Alex left me.

I held the black lacquered box in my hands, with my mom standing beside me, holding an umbrella over my head.

The once heavy figure was now reduced to a small handful of ashes. The rain seeped through my back.

Whispers floated behind me.

“Why do we only see the child’s mother on a day like this? Where’s the child’s father?” “Lower your voice. I heard the child’s father is at the hospital, by his lover and her daughter’s side, not leaving for a moment.”

“His own child is dead, and he’s still with someone else’s child?”

“Yeah, unbelievably heartless father.”

My mother gently placed a hand on my shoulder.

“Lisa, let Alex rest in peace. I hope in his next life, he’ll be born to parents who truly love him.”

Looking at my mother’s now graying hair due to the stress from Alex and me, I wiped away my tears.

“Mom, I want a divorce.”

A hint of surprise appeared on my mother’s face, followed by a heavy sigh.

“As long as you’re sure, your father and I will support you.”

As I watched Alex’s urn being slowly buried in the soil, my heart seemed to be buried along with it.

“Mom, could you check on Rick’s current academic reports and research progress for me.”

My mother nodded.

Suddenly, my phone rang.

I picked it up and found it was Rick calling.

I thought he was calling to inquire about Alex’s funeral arrangements.

But as soon as I answered, Rick’s angry voice came through, making me realize he had no conscience at all.

Lisa, why are you blaming Jenny for Alex’s death? You ruined her job. How will she live now? She still needs to take care of Mia.

“I know Alex’s death hit you hard, but Mia is Jenny’s beloved too. How did you become so malicious?”

I snorted. Jenny was a self-media blogger, and coincidentally, the media company with which she had a contract was owned by my friend.

After Alex’s incident, my friend terminated her contract directly.

“Are you done? Do you even know what day it is today?”

Rick paused.

“What day is it?”

“Today is the day of your son Alex’s burial.”

Rick, on the other end of the phone, froze, then hesitated for a long time before responding hesitantly.

“Lisa, why didn’t you inform me? Where are you guys now?”

“Rick, do you know what Alex’s last words were before he passed away?

“Alex, a small child, lying in my arms, his eyes filled with longing and hope. He said to me, ‘Mom, I want to see Dad again.”

My tone was calm yet tinged with sadness.

Finally, Rick broke down in tears.

“Lisa, I was wrong. I know I was wrong. I’m sorry, Alex.”

After a long while, Rick regained his composure.

“Lisa, tell me where Alex is buried. I’ll come over right now.”

I glanced at my watch, thinking, “It is time.”

“Rick, you better take care of your Jenny and Mia. As for Alex, are you even worthy to see him?”

After hanging up, I sent a message to someone: [It can begin now.

The lawyer’s words echoed in my mind, “All the houses under your names are considered marital property. Divorcing now would not be in your favor.”
