Chapter 4
Chapter 4
As I woke up, the smell of disinfectant in the air p r i c ed at every nerve in my body.
When I opened my eyes, the first thing I saw was Rick resting against the bedside table.
His expression was as unchanged as it was the first time we met.
It was because of a fleeting glance at him in the crowd that I plunged headlong into what I thought was love.
Rick came from a poor background in the deep mountains, while I was a pampered girl from a wealthy family.
Everyone at home opposed my marriage to Rick, but I persisted against all odds. It was my blind determination that had led to Alex’s suffering and my own. As I saw his face now, all I felt was a seething mix of hatred and regret.
Rick heard the movement and quickly opened his eyes, looking at me with concern. “Lisa, you’re awake. You’ve been unconscious for two days. Do you know how worried I’ve been?” Rick said anxiously.
“What about Alex? How is he? Is he okay?”
I gripped Rick’s arm tightly, hoping to see a glimmer of hope in his eyes.
At the mention of Alex’s name, Rick lowered his head, his face turning pale.
“Lisa, I know you’re heartbroken right now, but we’ve done everything we could. You’re pregnant, don’t be too upset.”
I pushed him away forcefully, pointing at Rick with anger.
“Done everything? Rick, how dare you say you’ve done everything? You’re the one who killed Alex. You’re a murderer, your hands stained with the blood of your own son.”
Rick held his head in anguish, tears streaking his face, appearing sorrowful as if he was truly grieving for Alex.
“Lisa, I don’t know. Alex’s condition had stabilized. I had made sure he could hold on for a few more months. I don’t know how things turned out like this.”
I kicked Rick hard, causing the needle to pierce my hand, staining the pristine white sheets with my blood.
“What did you ensure? Giving my son’s spot to Jenny, you killed Alex with your own hands.”
As Alex’s attending physician, Rick had not visited Alex for five days.
During this time, Alex’s fever kept recurring. I called Rick in fear, only to receive his impatient warning.
Chapter 4
“Lisa, I’m Alex’s dad and his doctor. I know his condition very well. Don’t use Alex’s illness as a guise because you’re jealous of Jenny. It’s disgusting how you’re acting. “Don’t call me unless it’s an emergency, I’m busy.”
Mia’s soft voice interrupted from the other end of the phone.
“Rick, who are you talking to? Didn’t you say you’d focus on drawing with me?”
Rick’s icy tone softened instantly when he heard the voice.
“I’ll be right there.”
Listening to the busy tone on the call, I stood there in shock, realizing he had a loving side, not just the stern father who criticized Alex for not being strong or brave enough.
He simply didn’t love Alex or me.
Anxious footsteps outside snapped me back to reality.
Jenny appeared at the door of the ward in a white dress, looking innocently pure, her eyes filled with tears as she gazed at Rick.
“Rick, what do we do? Mia’s fever keeps s p k i n g,” Jenny said, her voice trembling. Rick hesitated, glancing at me before finally stepping forward. “Lisa, I’ve lost Alex. I can’t bear to see something happen to Mia. Rest well for now, I’ll come see you again.”
Rick hesitated, glancing at me before finally stepping forward.
“Lisa, I’ve lost Alex. I can’t bear to see something happen to Mia. Rest well for now, I’ll come see you again.”
Grabbing a mango from the bedside table, which I was allergic to, I hurled it at him. “Rick, I will make you all pay for this.”
