Sasha Swift

Chapter 30 The Truth

Sasha

“What does it say?” I ask Zane who is kneeling beside Ted’s body unmoving.

“It’s nothing. Let’s bury the body and go.” Zane stands up and shoves the paper into his pants pocket. His body is tense and I can tell something is going on.

Zane walks over to his car and opens his trunk and grabs a tarp. He wraps Ted's body up and throws it in the trunk. Zane refuses to make eye contact with me even though I know he can feel me staring at him.

“Zane, what is going on? Talk to me!” I shout but he keeps his back turned to me.

“Let’s go. We have a body to bury. Now Sasha.” He growls and gets into the driver’s seat.

I get into the car despite wanting to pull out one of my knives and stab Zane with it. The whole car ride is silent besides the radio. We drive into the woods and Zane parks. He gets out of the car without looking at me and goes straight to the trunk. I can hear him opening the trunk and getting things out.

Getting out of the car I see Zane walking away body over his shoulder and a shovel in his hand. I follow behind him keeping a respectful distance. I can smell Ted from this position and he is starting to stink. I wonder how long he has been dead?

We reach a clearing in the forest and Zane drops the body on the ground and starts digging a hole. Through his shirt, I can see how tense he is. His back muscles strain against his shirt. It’s almost sexy if I didn’t feel like he was hiding something.

“Will you talk to me, please? Tell me what did the note say? Did it have something to do with me?” I beg.

Zane doesn’t answer but the way his shoulders tense up tells me I’m right. He keeps digging and I go up to him and grab the shovel from him and throw it on the ground. He stares at me in disbelief.

“Tell me now what is going on!” I yell at him.

Zane scowls. “It’s nothing. Let’s focus on one thing at a time.”

I’m so irritated. I can’t believe he is lying to me again. Every time I think we are moving forward something has to happen to set us back. Zane grabs the shovel off the ground and keeps digging. I start walking away and I can feel his eyes on me.

“Where are you going?” He shouts but I continue to walk away. “Sasha stop! It’s not safe.”

I hear digging and then sense Zane coming up behind me. He must have realized I’m not going to stop and hurried to bury the body. He grabs my shoulders and spins me around to face him. “Damn, it Sasha stop!” He growls in my face.

I shove him away. “I thought you were done lying to me.” I grit my teeth together. “But still you hide things from me.”

Zane bites his lip looking guilty. Sighing in frustration I turn around to walk away. I’m spun around again but this time I’m met with a rough kiss on my lips.

“I can’t lose you.” Zane whispers as he trails a finger down my cheek.

“You won’t.”

Zane growls. “You don’t see how perfect you are. How every little thing you do drives me, crazy love.”

I blush. It’s the little sweet things he says to me that drives me wild. I want to melt into his arms but I can’t. I muster up all the strength I can and pull myself away from him Zane looks at me disappointed.

“The truth Zane now. No more games.”

We stare into each other's eyes. Determination is set in both of us. But also what I see is fear. Whatever Zane has to tell me has him afraid to lose me.

Running his hand through his brown locks he answers. “They want you. The royal council or they start killing more people.”
