Sanctuary II

Chapter The Undercity

Below the sewers of Sanctuary lies the hidden Sanctuary Undercity, constructed as a place for citizens to evacuate to, in the event the darkness brought through. The Wings of the Dragon resistance group, however, have been rescuing certain high profile targets from the City above, and sneaking them into the city below.

The Undercity was constructed to be completely self-sufficient, and the design was created by Atlas and Dex. The main street of the city was designed to resemble a Mall, with shops and restaurants running the whole way along. Due to the low population, however, the majority are empty, and most citizens and resistance members live in one area.

Ashe was sat on the upper level of the high street, gazing down at one of the fountains.

"You're looking a little down" Dex's voice called over. Ashe turned to see Dex approaching and waved slightly. "I'm sure Ariel made it, she's strong, and so is Atlas" Dex comforted.

"Yeah, I know..." Ashe sighed, turning away. "It's just been so long since I last saw her" She frowned.

"I know that feeling" Dex nodded. "I miss Roisin so much" He added. Ashe looked around at the mall and smiled.

"I could live out my days down here, with her" Ashe said, as she brushed her hair away from her face.

"Underground?" Dex asked, sounding slightly confused.

"Yeah" Ashe laughed. "We've all been watching our backs for so long, down here it feels safe and secure, there's no worry that a big airship will turn up, or whatever" She continued.

"Hmm, I suppose, I sorta missed all of that" Dex pondered. "To me, it was kinda like... I remember getting stabbed, then I woke up in Sanctuary. There was some murky dreamlike memories in between, but the time between Pyre and now feels short, for me" He explained.

"Yeah, you missed a lot of stuff" Ashe chucked, as she sat down on a bench behind her.

"Roisin has told me a few bits... like Droids rising up, an endless winter, sounds... interesting" Dex smiled, as he sat next to Ashe.

"I missed you, after you were gone" Ashe sighed. "Me, you, Ariel and Roisin... the original four" She smiled.

"Yeah... and Logan" Dex smiled sadly. "He was how I met you guys, if I remember correctly" He sighed.

"Logan... the last time we saw him, we didn't even realise it would be the last" Ashe nodded. "Rychard should have known they would get shot down" She grunted.

"He probably did, the cold-hearted bastard" Dex said as he pounded his fist on the bench.

"He had us all fooled, Roisin the most" Ashe said, as she looked at the holographic display of clouds on the ceiling.

"Yeah, she was so trusting back then..." Dex sighed. "Hell, we all were. Or I guess we were just naive" He shrugged.

"You know, when we first set out, with Roisin on the airship, I always thought that it would have just been a short trip out, and that eventually we would have wound up returning to Wynd and continuing our studies" Ashe explained.

"Yeah, those days were the best. Though Sanctuary, pre-cult was pretty decent too" Dex smiled.

"It will be again. Once we get rid of this pretend Empire" Ashe nodded.

"Yeah, I'm not gonna let an Empire destroy my home for a third time. It's way past the time of Empires and Imperium, we will consign them to the history books" Dex said, in an encouraging tone.

"Hmm, I hadn't thought about it like that, Sanctuary really is your true home isn't it?" Ashe smiled.

"My true home is wherever Roisin is" Dex winked.

"That was far too sappy" Ashe teased.

"Yeah, as soon as it came out of my mouth I was like 'Oh gods', but I committed to it anyway" Dex laughed.

"Dedication to the joke" Ashe cheered.

"Hells yeah! Rebels with a cause" Dex laughed. The two continued chatting as their laughs echoed through the main street of the Undercity, putting a smile on the face of passers-by.
