Rosangela: The Runaway Princess (Book #2)

Chapter 35

I stamped out of my bedroom, and then trudged along the hallway, laden with my heavy bags. After only five minutes, I was already out of breath. Thus, I reluctantly had to stop to catch my breath.

'I think carrying these bags up the stairs can be a very tiresome. So I’d better take the lift,' I thought.

“But Prince Xavier told me that only the royal family who are allowed to use the lift. So what shall I do now?” I wondered.

After a few moments of contemplation, I finally said, “Screw the rules! I’ll chance taking the lift.”

“I hope nobody will find out what you’re about to do, or you’ll be in trouble, Rosanne,” my conscience said.

“I hope so too,” I agreed with her.

I continued walking. After some time, I lastly saw the elevator at the other end of the corridor.

I looked up and down the corridor. When I was sure the coast was clear, I hurried across the hallway to the elevator, pressed a button, and waited for the elevator to arrive.

Moments later, the elevator doors finally parted open. I was just about to enter the elevator, but I immediately took a couple of steps backwards when I saw Mariana stepping out of the elevator.

“What the bloody hell do you think you’re doing here, Angela?” Mariana asked. Her cheeks flamed with rage.

“Prince Xavier ordered me to go to his room,” I answered calmly.

“Did His Highness command you to use the lift?” She narrowed her eyes at me suspiciously.

I gulped and shook my head. “No.”

I knew it’s no use lying to Mariana so I preferred to tell her the truth.

Mariana took two paces closer to me, but I drew back.

“So you’re out of order taking the elevator without asking for permission?” She glared at me.

“Okay, I admit that I’m wrong. But try to think logically, Mariana! How can I climb up the stairs with these heavy bags?” I tried to reason with her.

“It’s none of my business. A rule is a rule, Angela. And everyone must obey the rules without question,” she stormed.

“So everyone must obey the rules, huh? That’s rich, coming from you, Mariana!” I sneered.

She frowned in puzzlement. “What do you mean?”

“You said everyone had to obey the rules but you yourself break the rules by using the elevator that’s supposed to be used by the royal family only,” I explained.

A flush embarrassment spread over Mariana’s cheeks. I was certain that deep down she knew what I said was right. But that old vampire was too proud to admit it.

“I’m an exception. I am the head maid here, so I have the privilege to use the lift,” she made up an excuse.

“Still you aren’t a part of royal family, Mariana. So if a commoner like you can use the lift, I also can.”

“Even though I am not a member of the royal family, but I’m definitely above you in rank, Angela. You are just a member of the lowest class of society. Oh no, I am wrong. You’re probably below them. Because you’re a pet. You’re no different than an animal, and you should be treated like one. You don’t deserve to the privilege of using the lift nor any others privileges in this palace. All you have to do is follow your master’s orders like an obedient dog.”

What Mariana said made me bristle with rage. I had never been so insulted in my life like this. I could feel my eyes reddening. Thus, I quickly dropped my gaze to the floor so that she wouldn’t see it.

Since I turned 17, my vampire power tended to reveal itself, especially when I was angry, and I was usually finding it difficult to control my power. Therefore, before I snapped and caused bad things to happen, without saying anything else, I spun on my heel and stomped towards the spiral staircase located just a few meters from the elevator.

“Where the hell do you think you’re going, Angela?” Mariana demanded angrily.

I ignored her and carried on walking towards the staircase. Luckily, Mariana didn’t run after me.

Slowly, I struggled up the stairs with the heavy bags. After what felt like hours, but was in fact probably no more than 20 minutes or so, at last, I arrived breathless at the top of the stairs. Afterwards, I heaved my bags down the corridor to the prince’s bedroom. Once I reached there, I dropped my bags on to the floor and rapped angrily on the door.

Within seconds, Prince Xavier opened the door. Xavier’s face was etched with annoyance. But he didn’t say anything. He just stood aside and let me enter his bedroom.

I bent down to pick up my bags and carried them into the room.

“What took you so long?” Xavier queried indignantly as he shut the door.

“It’s not my fault that I needed a long to get to your room!” I talked back to him. “You know, I had to pack my things first. And then, I had to climb up hundreds of steps to this floor while carrying my heavy bags.”

“Why didn’t you take the lift?” he asked in annoyance.

“Didn’t you tell me that nobody was allowed to use the lift except for the royal family?” I asked back irritably.

Xavier huffed. “I know it’s against the rules for someone who isn’t from the royal family to use the lift. But since you have to carry heavy bags, so this is an exception.”

“You should have said it to Mariana,” I muttered.

Prince Xavier’s eyebrows lifted. “Mariana? What does that have to do with her?”

“I think I’d better not sneak on Mariana to Prince Xavier because I’m afraid it’ll only make things worse,” I thought.

“Oh, nothing. Just forget it!” I evaded answering his question and chose to change the subject, “By the way, where should I keep my clothes?”

“Just park your bags in my walk in closet floor until your wardrobe is ready!” he commanded nonchalantly.

“Okay.” Without uttering another word, I walked into his walk in closet and deposited my bags on the floor.

Turning around, I intended to get out of walk in closet soon, but I stopped short as realization dawned in.

“Wait! If I keep my clothes in the bag, I will crease them. I can’t wear my clothes if it’s creased, right? So I think I’d better hang my clothes.”

Quickly, I unpacked my bag, then I took the spare hangers, and lastly hung my clothes next to Xavier’s expensive suits.

When I emerged from the walk in closet, I found Prince Xavier standing against the wall, watching me with his arms folded across his chest.

“I only told you to put your bags down in the walk in closet. Why did you take so long?” he complained.

“Can’t you stop grumbling? I also need time to hang my clothes, you know,” I retorted.

My remarks apparently incensed Prince Xavier. “Who says you can hang your clothes in my closet? I told you--”

“I know, Xavier,” I interjected, “But if I kept my clothes in the bag, I would crease them. That’s why I decided to hang my clothes. But don’t worry, I’ll move my clothes as soon as my own closet is ready.”

“Oh Angela! Why won’t you listen to my words? Is it that hard to obey a simple order?” he growled.

“Chill out, Xavier! It’s only a small problem. You shouldn’t make an issue of it,” I tried to calm him down.

Prince Xavier let out a groan of frustration. “There’s no point in arguing with you.”

Walking over to his bed, Xavier perched himself on the edge of the bed.

Talking of bed, I suddenly realized something. Prince Xavier told me to sleep in his bedroom from now on, but the problem was there was only one bed here, so I wondered where I was going to sleep.

“I’d better ask Xavier now,” I thought.

“Where shall I sleep?” I inquired.

Before Xavier could give me a reply, I interrupted, “Don’t tell me to sleep on your bed! Because you know what? I don’t want to sleep in the same bed as you.”

The idea of sharing a bed with Prince Xavier appalled me. I knew that vampire prince’d got a filthy mind. Therefore, I was afraid that he would try to sexually assault me if I were sleeping next to him.

“Who says I’ll ask you to sleep on the bed? You have to sleep on the floor!” Prince Xavier said sourly.

“I can’t believe it! You ask a girl to sleep on the floor? Oh that’s very gallant of you.” I said sarcastically.

Prince Xavier sprang to his feet. “I don’t mean to be rude, okay? But if you sleep on my bed, where am I supposed to sleep then?” he defended himself.

“Of course you’ll sleep on the floor,” I retorted.

Xavier’s green eyes flared angrily. “How dare you tell a prince to sleep of the floor?!”

“Prince or not, you’re still a man and I’m a girl. That’s why you have to let me sleep on the bed, meanwhile you sleep on the floor,” I reasoned.

“No, I am not going to sleep on the floor. If you don’t want to sleep in the same bed as me, you’d better sleep on the floor. On the contrary, if you don’t want to sleep on the floor, you may sleep on the bed with me,” he emphasized.

“No. I’m not going to sleep on the bed, I don’t want to sleep on the floor either,” I said stubbornly.

“Then where are you going to sleep?” he asked in an exasperated voice.

I opened my mouth to answer his question, but Xavier cut me off, “Don’t tell me you want to go back to your room! Because guess what, Little Pet? I will never let you do that.”

I rolled my eyes. “Yeah, yeah, I know a stubborn prince like you will never allow me to go back to my old room. That’s why I prefer to sleep on that couch.” I pointed to a couch with several scatter cushions that was placed by the window.

“Fine. You can kip on the couch, if you like,” he said decidedly.

“OK. That’s settled, then. I’m going to sleep on the couch.” I walked up to the couch and began to pile the cushions at the arm of the couch.

“Why didn’t you tell me earlier that you want to sleep on the couch? If you told me, we didn’t have to bicker, right?” Xavier grumbled.

I spun around to face him. “Don’t blame me! You started it. If you didn’t tell me to sleep on the floor in the first place, I wouldn’t argue with you.”

Xavier snorted with annoyance. “Yeah, whatever. I know I will never win an argument with a stubborn girl like you.”

I grinned triumphantly.

“I’m tired, so I think I’ll turn in early tonight,” Xavier told me.

“As if I care!” I said in a faint murmur.

I was sure that Prince Xavier could hear me, but he chose to ignore it. He flung himrself onto the bed and pulled the covers up to his neck.

“Turn off the lights!” Xavier commanded curtly.

Didn’t want to argue with the annoying vampire prince again, I decided to obey him this time. Crossing the room, I switched the main light off, leaving only the night lights on. After that, I got back to the couch and plumped up the cushions before laying curled up in a foetal position on the couch.

“Night, night, Prince Xavier,” I said mockingly as I shut my eyes. Within a few minutes, I was fast asleep.

Prince Xavier’s POV:

Angela lay down in a foetal position on the sofa and closed her eyes. A few minutes later, her breathing became steady. So I knew that she had just fallen asleep.

After I was certain that she wouldn’t wake up any time soon, I threw back the covers and leapt out of bed. Then, I strode across the room before entering my walk in closet to fetch a blanket.

Returning to my bedroom, I went over to the couch where Angela was sleeping, and finally put the blanket over her.

I wanted to go back to my bed, but something held me back. Instead, I bent forward and reached out my hand to wipe the strands of hair out of her face before placing them behind her ear.

I stared at Angela’s beautiful face. She looked so innocent while she was sleeping. I wished she could be like this too when she’s awake.

“Oh Gosh, what was I thinking?” Shaking my head, I dismissed the thoughts from my mind before I wandered back to my bed.

At last, I climbed into the cold bed and snuggled beneath the covers. No sooner had I closed my eyes than I fell asleep.
