Chapter Chapter seventeen
Freya awoke before dawn, feeling the fog of zeal that enveloped her slowly dissipate. Her mind was a whirlwind of emotions, a hurricane threatening to shatter the memories of the magical three days she'd spent with Crono. Every moment spent with him had been a marvel, but reality was calling, reminding her that she must not falter in her mission.
She blinked several times, hesitating between staying and immersing herself in her companion's comforting embrace, or sticking to her plans. A heavy, melancholy-laden sigh escaped her lips as she also reminded herself that her reaction to discovering the presence of the man who, in her past life, had been her great love, was yet to come.
She cautiously bent down under the pain, not wanting to wake him. Before placing her hand on the handle, she inhaled deeply, letting the scent of her companion permeate every pore of her being. A slow, powerful sigh escaped her lips, like a final caress to the connection they'd shared over the past three days.
She walked almost limply down the corridor to her bedroom and closed the door behind her. She walked over to the bed and lay there, staring at the ceiling as she searched the shadows of her mind for reasons why she couldn't give in and give up. She knew that if she did, she would be destroyed in the same way as in her past life. She felt the need to take revenge on those who had trapped her, she was ready to destroy her companion if need be. The thirst for vengeance consumed her.
Crono awoke when he felt no warmth from his companion. He raised his head and looked around the room for her. He got up and went to the bathroom, but when he didn't see her, he smiled mischievously. There was a gleam in her eyes, a joy in the days of passion shared with his wife. Even if he doubted Agamemnon's innocence, he felt hopeful at the idea of finding his companion. He murmured between his teeth.
"My beast, you are beautiful in every way, sweet and tender".
He returned to the bathroom, took a quick shower, dressed and left the room. He headed for his office and called Dionisio. When she felt him pick up the phone, she asked. "Have you managed to investigate what I asked you to do?"
"Hello, my friend. Our moon let you out of the room," he expressed in a joking tone, seeing that his friend didn't grumble, he continued with a smile, "Yes, I found out some interesting things about your companion's family." "Speak."
"Camellia, one of our tracker wolves and the best at research, has infiltrated Agamemnon's pack. She's uncovered some shady and intriguing things."
"I'm waiting for answers," he demanded again. He had no patience right now, and he wanted to know more about Freya.
"Agamemnon and Pyrrhus hate each other. It seems that Freya's mother was Pyrrhus's companion; Flavia was mistreated by him and rejected him as a companion. Pyrrhus was not a good wolf, and his father realized this, to the point of disowning him as a son and naming Agamemnon as his successor. Agamemnon and Flavia eventually married and gave birth to Freya. Shortly after Freya's birth, her mother was abducted and found dead years later. Apparently, Agamemnon suspects his brother of being behind this tragedy. Worst of all, Freya is the spitting image of her mother. From what you've told me about Pyrrhus' terms for the peace treaty, I now understand why he asked for Freya as a truce." Crono's gaze darkened at this point, feeling the need to keep an eye on his wife. He wouldn't let this man anywhere near her.
"I now understand my wife's obsession. But first, dead, let me touch her."
"He also discovered that years ago, just as Freya turned 15, the alpha's offices were broken into. They captured a she-wolf, and when Agamemnon saw her, he let her go, feeling guilty for leaving her alone without his mate. Turns out he'd been in love with Flavia since childhood, and felt guilty for not feeling anything for the she-wolf who was meant for him, Claudia, who happens to be his mate. Guess where this woman has been spotted?"
Crono clenched his fists, feeling the tension in his jaw as he absorbed the shocking revelation.

"In Kelpie territory."
"Yes, and because she once belonged to the Sith pride and her father was a respected warrior of our Frontier, Claudia crossed without restriction. It seems that Agamemnon is unaware that she is in enemy territory." Crono exhales, his mind feeling a mixture of frustration and worry.
"Tell Camelia to stay with the Sith pack and to keep you informed when Claudia appears in this pack. We need to capture her and make her talk."
"I'm already communicating with her. In fact, we've arranged for her to be at Agamemnon's mansion to keep an eye on him too."
"He hung up the call and brought a hand to his skull to scratch. The situation seemed more complex than he'd thought. Pyrrhus had always considered him a tyrannical profiteer and a traitor. Now he understood why, as the eldest brother, he was not the alpha of the Sith pack. It occurred to him that he was obsessed with Freya because of her resemblance to his mother. This wolf seemed repulsive; to covet his own niece and betray his own brother was the most evil thing he'd ever heard. His gaze tightened and he felt uneasy at the idea that this wolf would seek a way to take Luna away from him.
The days passed, and although Crono spent very little time at the manor, he kept a close eye on his wife's movements. Freya was restless, anxious to know the progress of her husband's investigation into the documents accusing her father. Seeing him arrive, she took courage and followed him into his study.
"Crono, I need to talk to you," he says icily.
Crono noticed the coldness of his attitude. On several occasions, he had wanted to sneak into her room, but so as not to disturb her, he had preferred to hold back. He sat back in his armchair, letting his body rest. It had been a particularly heavy day for him, as he had gone to talk to the wolves of the packs about joining his army. He tried to convince them to attack the orcs, but it wasn't easy, as they were afraid of these creatures.
"What does my lovely wife want? What do you want to talk about?" he said, staring at her.
"I wanted to ask you what you found out about my father's innocence. As I told you, I want to be informed of the progress of the investigation. I need to know everything you've uncovered and who the bastard is who's been feeding you false information to destroy us."
"The investigation is well underway. I need to gather more evidence against the real traitor, but I won't let you get involved in this," Crono says as he examines some documents.
"I want to know who you suspect. For the past year, I've been observing my father's relatives and I haven't found anyone suspicious."
"What's more, I remind you that you're the daughter of the man I suspect of being the traitor of this region, and I don't want you sticking your nose into my affairs," he said seriously, going through some papers.
Freya frowned furiously. Since she'd been reincarnated, she didn't have much patience left.
