Chapter 3
As soon as I arrived in the hall, I heard Alpha Derick’s mother, Sandra, praising him, “Alpha Derick, I’ve heard that Hadley will be taking the Alpha assessment this year. His qualifications are outstanding, and that’s all thanks to your excellent upbringing. Hadley is fortunate to have you as his father.”
Alpha Derick replied calmly, “Hadley is my son. He must be exceptional to lead the pack and make it stronger.”
Veronica agreed, “Hadley is indeed impressive—strong, well-mannered, and courteous. Everyone likes him.”
Juliet, Alpha Derick’s sister, quickly joked, “Since you like Hadley so much, why don’t you become his stepmother?” Juliet and Veronica had always been close, and she wished Veronica could be the pack’s Luna.
Her remark caused the entire family to burst into laughter, as if it echoed their sentiments.
As I entered the hall, the lively atmosphere immediately shifted, and the guests looked at me as if a fly had just buzzed in.
“Eileen, where is Hadley?” Alpha Derick asked coldly when he noticed I was alone.
I stared at him with a cold gaze. “Do you still care about your son?”
Alpha Derick’s expression darkened, and his tone became sharp. “What are you saying? I am indeed very busy and don’t have much time to be with Hadley, but he is the reason I work hard. He is my only son and the sole heir to the Red Moon Pack. Everything in the pack will be left to Hadley. How could I not care about him?”
“All for Hadley? I thought everything was meant for Veronica.”
For Veronica, he cruelly abandoned Hadley and me on the way to the alpha assessment.
He ignored my desperate pleas and resolutely left to attend to Veronica’s cat.
The thought still pains me deeply.
The members of the Red Moon Pack looked at me as if I were a stranger upon hearing my words. No one expected me, usually so compliant and obedient, to openly defy Alpha Derick.
Alpha Derick frowned, his patience wearing thin. “I didn’t take you and Hadley to the alpha assessment. So what? How long are you going to make a fuss over such a trivial matter?”
Veronica seized the opportunity to provoke me. “Eileen, I know you’re narrow-minded and envious. It’s one thing to cause a scene in front of Alpha Derick, but today is Mrs. Sandra Gildon’s birthday. She just wanted to see Hadley, and Hadley loves coming to his grandmother’s house. How can you deliberately avoid Hadley just to vent your anger? You truly fail as a mother.”
Her words sparked disdainful glances from everyone.
Sandra, especially, was so furious her face turned red. She snapped, “Regardless, the alpha assessment is over, and Hadley will soon be able to handle pack affairs on his own. Alpha Derick, bring Hadley here now. Don’t let him be tainted by this irresponsible woman. Don’t let her ruin my most precious grandson.”
Juliet also gave me a scornful look. “Knowing Hadley was coming, Veronica made his favorite beef pizza. Compared to you, this petty woman, Veronica seems more like Hadley’s true mother.”
For years, I have worked tirelessly for Hadley without complaint, as his mother and as the pack’s Luna.
I gave everything unconditionally, but to the Gildon family, nothing I did could compare to Veronica’s beef pizza.
They actually believed that Veronica, who indirectly caused Hadley’s death, was more fit to be his mother than I was.
How ironic.
So very ironic.
I laughed, tears mingling with my smile.
“Eileen, have you had your fun?”
Alpha Derick was furious. “Hadley is the future alpha of my pack, not a pawn for your jealousy and tantrums. A woman who disregards his preferences and lacks responsibility like you is unworthy of being his mother or the pack’s Luna.”
“Today is my mother’s birthday. If you don’t want to be here, you can leave, but Hadley must attend. He is my son, the next alpha of the Red Moon Pack. Bring him out now!”
I stopped laughing, my eyes red as I looked at Alpha Derick and said, each word deliberate, “I brought Hadley.”
Alpha Derick looked around, asking, “Where is he?”
The other members of the Gildon family also began searching for Hadley.
Sandra even stood up from her seat, squinting as she searched for Hadley. “Where is my precious grandson?”
I pulled the urn from my bag and placed it heavily on the table.
“He’s here!”
