Chapter 20: Lessons of Shadows
Lyla's pov
You have to be ready for the trouble you are going to face. I recalled Aria words which were the queen mother's, as she said.
Be it queen mother or witch, I didn't really care. All I knew was they were all ancestors of a witches which still had access to the living and could communicate to the living if granted.
The particular witch involved was the one who brought me back from the dead for a purpose.
What I realized about this whole hunter and witch teamwork was that they had the same thing In common. They both hated Ryker. And they were ready to work together.
I was so pissed and at the same time yearn to know the truth about what was going to happen. How could she just tell me something like that without the specifics.
I knew It would have something to do with Ryker but I didn't know what.
In order for me to defeat Ryker, I needed practice and Kyle was the best shot I had.
We had agreed to meet up today.I began to trust Kyle as everyday past. He seemed nothing like his father.
It seemed like Aria also thought the same because she stopped coming to the bayou with me. The only reason she went with me before was because she didn't trust him. It means she trusted him now, even if it was just a little. I made my way through the forest of the bayou trying to get to the spot where me and Kyle usually met.
I heard that the first ray of sunlight was good for the skin. So I had no problem walking right under the sun. I mean, who doesn't want a flawless skin.
When I eventually got there. Kyle stood there waiting. "Today, "Kyle began with his voice which sounded cold. I wondered why he didn't talk about me being late as usual.
"We're going to focus on something beyond raw strength and speed. You'll learn how to own your senses and learn to move with the environment.
I nodded. I was more determined than ever. Since I knew danger was up ahead, it was beat I stayed focused.
I followed Kyle deeper into the bayou. His steps were silent and gentle.
"First lesson, "Kyle said. "Is stealth. In the wild, action, force or combact will not always be an ally. If you rely on then solely, you're are dead."
"Sometimes you have to become one with the ground.' he explained.
I watched as he moved through the forest like a predator. He steps were so silent that even dry leaves made no sound. I was determined to download as he did, maybe even better. "now you try. "Kyle instructed.
I took a deep breath before I began to move. I focused on each step as my legs touched the ground. Just like Kyle did. But I heard a twig from a dry leave, then I knew I failed. "Good start, "Kyle encouraged. "But remember, it's not just about silence. It is also about being aware of your surroundings and moving with it as one.
Kyle closed his eyes while he tilted his hair. I wonder what he was doing."You smell that? "he asked.
I sniffed around. "Smell what? "I questioned as I could not smell anything other than leaves or dead trees.
"There is a deer nearby and you're going to find it. "he said as he try to smell again.
"You know the smell of deers. That isn't weird at all. "I stated but I found it extremely weird.
"That was how I trained myself to always find them. In no time, it just became a part of me."
I didn't know if I should have been proud that he turned out like this all on his own or I should feel bad as he was left on his own.
I inhaled deeply and began to search for the scent of a deer. There was no way I would know that so I just searched for something which didn't turn out to the a tree or grass.
I picked up the scent of something and my senses sharpened. "Now use that to your advantage. "Kyle continued. "Stalk it, but don't let it sense you. This will teach you patience, stealth and precision. Remember be quiet."he added.
For the next hour, I watched the deer and shadowed it but I wasn't tired at all. My movements grew Increasingly silent as I walked towards the dear.
The sounds the deer made, I could hear It all. I got an opportunity and grabbed the deer. It struggled to be free but I was strong enough to hold it.
"Well done. "he said.
I looked at the deer which was still alive. I felt so happy knowing that I caught it myself without any help. I finally let go off the deer since I had no intention of killing it.
"Take a break, then we'll move on to the next lesson. I'll be right back."he said and within a flash he was gone.
I wondered where he went to. He was slightly cold since I came and he hasn't said anything word to me since the day we had a drink together.
Swoosh. And he was back. "This is for you."he said handing me of food.
"What's this for? "I asked in suprise.
"What else is it for? For eating, of course. "he answered.
"I know that. But why did you bring it. I never told you I was hungry."
"I just figured you may be tired after the lesson and besides, you wouldn't say a word even if you were hungry. "he said while looking at me.
"So you just decided to get me food. That's surprising. "I admitted.
He acted all cold to me through the beginning of the lesson. I wasn't expecting this.
"it's your break. Besides I wanted to repay you back for the other night."I looked at him.
I thought he didn't remember because he didn't say anything about it.
"I'm sorry I didn't say anything earlier. But I really appreciate. I didn't know what else to do for you, so that's why I got you food."
He explained.
"I knew It!"I shouted. "I knew you could not just decide you wanted to gift me. "I said smiling.
"You don't have to thank me. Neither do you have to gift me. There was nothing special in what I did. Any friend would have done the same."
Did I just really call him my friend. He was an enemy son. "I just wanted to say that no one has been that nice to me. So it meant a lot and I appreciated it."
