Chapter 9
Cheyenne’s POV
After I got home, I had been thinking more on this upcoming war that I was supposed to fight in and if I failed, it would mean the end for my kind. I decided to do some research on the past wars that greatly affected our kind as a whole, with the help of Koa. She was actually very helpful and knew a lot about the history of our kind. Needless to say, I was kind of surprised at how much she knew. I was looking for patterns, who won and how they won and then I noticed the dates of each of the major wars. They were all exactly 150 years apart. Just enough that the stories could be passed down, but 1 werewolf wouldn’t have to live through 2 wars in the same lifetime.
“Well, that’s weird…” I thought to myself, forgetting once again that I was not alone in my head anymore.
“What’s weird Dearie?” Koa’s smooth voice coming back in my head.
“All these wars. They are all right around 150 years apart. Granted they started at different times of the years so they’re exactly 150 years apart but, oh you get what I’m trying to say or am I confusing you like I’m confusing myself now?!” I groaned out loud. Koa softly chuckled and it floated to all the corners of my mind.
“I do understand what you are saying. Don’t over think it. I can tell you that you are the first one to catch on to that little fact as quickly as you did. Others took a lot longer. That’s all I can say at this point. You must figure this out on your own. I can only confirm or deny and try to point you in the right direction. So please don’t ask about the ‘others’.”
Again with the riddles. Damn it! Well at least I know I’m going in the right direction with this and it’s not a complete and utter waste of my time. I started writing down and organizing the most important key facts about each war. I listed out the wars’ names, dates, the packs involved and locations. It was close to 2 hours later before I realized just how much time had passed. It was dark outside; you could hear the frogs croaking and crickets chipping away without a care in the world.
I stretched my arms and legs out in front of me and was getting up to head to the bathroom when I heard someone walking down the hall. I hurried to hide my notes and other items that pertained to the wars. Just as I was shoving the last bit of notes under my blanket there was a knock at the door.
“Cheyenne are you still awake?” It was just Tyler.
“Well, if I wasn’t I am now.” I hollered back.
“Can I come in?” He sounded like there was something wrong and I got this feeling that something wasn’t right.
“Yeah, come on in.” Tyler opened my door and walked in. He had a worrisome look on his face. “What’s wrong? You lose your tree star or something?” I didn’t handle seriousness very well. I was always cracking jokes at the most inappropriate times. Again, momma always said my mouth would get me trouble someday.
Tyler didn’t even look at me, just walked in and sat at my desk, the whole time staring at the floor. What the hell? I straighten up on the edge of my bed and moved closer towards him.
“Ty? What’s wrong?”
“Swear you won’t tell anyone?”
“Have I told anyone about when…” I didn’t even get a chance to finish when his head snapped up and if looks could kill, I would be a pile of ash on the floor right now. I throw my hands up in surrender. “Ok ok. I swear. Want me to pinkie promise?” I ask as I hold my pinkie out. Tyler and I were always close and pinkie promises were our thing and they were sacred. Tyler looked at my pinkie and then wrapped his around it and I swore that this conversation would be kept within these 4 walls.
“I found my mate.” He mumbled at first.
“Excuse me? I think I heard something about a mate?” I questioned.
“I found my mate.” He repeated himself a little louder.
“That’s great bub!” I was excited for him, and I got up to give him a hug when he held his hands up telling me to stop. I’m sure my face said what my mouth didn’t.
“No, it’s not great! I thought my mate was supposed to be everything to complete me?” he looked at me like I had the answers.
“Ty I’m not sure what you’re getting at here. Going to have to help me out.” I plead with him.
“She’s a human.” His head drops into his hands with his elbows on his knees.
“Wolves get mated to humans all the time. I’m still failing to see what the big deal is here.” I tried asking Koa for help, but she did not know anything. Since we have yet to shift, she wasn’t officially connected to the family so she couldn’t talk to Ty’s wolf.
“The problem isn’t that she’s a human. The problem is she comes from a family of known hunters. Specially wolf hunters.” Tyler finally opened up and told me.
“Holy shit! Does she know about you? Is she a hunter?” I questioned.
“No, she doesn’t know about me yet, and I don’t think she’s a hunter.”
An idea suddenly popped in my head, the light bulb moment if you will. I snapped my fingers and jumped up off my bed making Tyler jump in the chair at my sudden movement. He looked up at me with wide eyes.
“I got an idea. Not saying it would work, but it’s better than a couple of the alternatives.” I pause for a moment to gauge his reaction when I see his eyes light up, I continued. “Ok so you obviously don’t tell her you’re a wolf. You play it off that you’re a regular human just like her. You go through the dating life just like humans do. Get the feel for her. Make her fall in love with you. Once you know she does love you and you feel it’s safe enough, then you drop the wolf bomb. But during the time you’re trying to ‘woo’ her, if you find out that she does in fact hunt us, you’re going to have to reject her. But from what I’ve heard, the mate bond effects humans too just not as intense. So who knows Ty. It might actually work out. Selene wouldn’t have paired you two up if you couldn’t handle it.” I played punched him in the shoulder and I finally get a half-assed smirk from him.
“Selene huh? You on a first name basis with the Moon Goddess now or something?” Ty pokes back questioning me. Shit! I really needed to watch what I said around people about that shit.
“Or something.” I pop back and stick my tongue out at him while jumping out of his arm reach.
After sitting and talking through things for another hour with Tyler he finally heads out of my room, and I head back to my bed. I look over at my clock and it’s 1:42am. I groan internally knowing that I had to be up in about 5 hours for class. I lay down and pull my blanket up around my face and within minutes I was passed out.
