Chapter 40

I get home and I am shocked to find Sasha has already arrived. She is in the kitchen preparing dinner which is very strange because I have been cooking our meals for months.

‘Good evening.’

‘Good evening.’ I respond going to get a cup from the cupboard. I get some water from the dispenser to drink.

‘You can freshen up, dinner is almost ready.’

‘Okay.’

I get my things and walk to the spare bedroom where I have been sleeping. If it was in a different setup, I was going to be happy that my wife is finally coming around but then knowing Sasha and the type of person that she is, there is no way that she will ever change.

Pushing everything to the back of my mind, I take a long relaxing bath. Each time I leave the house she thinks that I am going to look for employment but in essence I go to her Aunty’s place where I do some work on my laptop and check on the progress of the farm via video and phone calls.

When I finish bathing, I get into my pajamas and leave my phone on charge then go to the dinning area where food has been set. I sit just opposite her, I must confess that the food smells really nice. Once settled, she waits for me to dish up for myself before she does too.

‘This is really nice.’ I say eating the nshima with katapa in impwa and dry fish.

‘Thank you.’

‘How was your day?’

‘My day was fine. How was yours?’ I ask her.

‘Not too good, I got word from management that I might be getting fired.’

I stop eating and look at her. Sasha loves her job and she works really hard unless of course she has started failing.

‘Why would they do that? Aren’t you one of the most hard working people the bank has?’

She breathes out deeply.

‘I guess I have been making some really bad decisions of late.’

She pauses as if gathering her thoughts.

‘I don’t know what happened to me Leo, I know I was a shitty person but how I am now, that is just above and beyond what I could possibly imagine.’

‘There is always room to change Sasha, we both know that.’

‘Yes there is, but away from you.’

I put the food that was in my hands on the plate and look at her. I guess this is what this kindness was about.’

‘Leo I have been a bad person to you from inception, and you have been nothing but kind. I cant continue dragging you along. You know I have to let you go.’

I smile at the realization of what she is telling me.

‘Leo I am sorry for everything but I think it’s high time that we put an end to this façade of a marriage. I don’t know how we are going to move past these years of our lives but we can’t continue living like this.’

‘Sasha.’ I begin.

‘I don’t know why you think that you can play God in our lives. We are both adults and we were responsible for how we got here, but I have been very patient and kind as you toyed with my emotions. I have been patient with the disrespect and I have been very tolerant. So what makes you think that you get to walk out?’

‘I thought.’

‘You thought right Sasha, I am not happy. I don’t want to be with you. I was never going to make you go through what you made me go through, and if I was going to divorce you I was going to cook some meal and pretend like everything was fine then drop that kind of news.’

I stand up.

‘You were with Gabrial again weren’t you?’

‘What?’

‘You were with him not so?’

‘He is not marrying Lona.’

‘You are so gullible aren’t you?’

‘We have a plan, he is not going to marry her. He will walk out on the day of the wedding and we will get married.’

It takes everything in me not to puke.

‘Sasha how could you? That is your friend.’

‘She is living my life Leo, Gabrial and I need to be together.’

‘So the two of you thought this through right? Did he tell you in his sober mind or he was inside you?’

‘Leo don’t disrespect me.’

‘Disrespect you? Wifey I can never disrespect you more than you have already done to yourself.’

She puts an envelop on the table that I didn’t notice earlier.

‘Please sign these and free me. Gabrial and I have a solid plan. We are eloping together on the day of his wedding to Lona.’

‘He cant even be man enough to just leave?’

‘She can’t let him, so we will go with his plan.’

‘And you think I won’t tell her?’

‘I know you won’t, you are not like us.’
