Chapter 19
All the years that Samara and I have been divorced there is no time that we didn’t spare a day in a month to just sit with the kids and pretend like this happy family, at first it was hard because none of us could walk past the pain we had all endured in our own way. But as time passed by we all grew and it hurt less and even though things would never be the same we found a ground on which to be mature around each other.
Today is Moudy’s birthday, she is Ernest’s wife. Samara has never liked her from the word go, she claims she is not a good girl and doesn’t deserve him but I would like to believe that she only despises her because Moudy can’t be controlled by her and if you ask me I feel she is good for our son because she keeps him in check. But then a man with certain habits that he is not ready to let go of despite having a good woman with him will always be like that, and I do feel for her because she has done everything in her power to make things right between them but he always finds himself moving from one extra marital partner to the next.
‘You are welcome daddy.’ She says with a huge smile though I can’t miss the black rings under her eyes
‘Happy birthday child.’ I say handing her a bouquet of flowers and a gift bag
‘Chivalry is your middle name.’
‘You do know there is nothing wrong with being a gentleman right?’
‘You deserve a good girl, allow me to hook you up with one of my friends already.’ She teases and I can’t help but laugh.
I have a good relationship with her and some times I wish it was Vaughn I was with like this.
‘And the absent father is here.’ Samara says walking in on us
Moudy excused herself
‘It’s good to see you too Samara.’
‘Don’t give me that bullshit VK, I was trying to call you some weeks back but there was no response and I am pretty sure you found my missed call notifications and yet you didn’t even have the courtesy to call me back.’
‘I have been busy Samara.’
‘Doing what? Fucking small girls? The same ones you were fucking when married to me?’
‘Actually I have been fucking one girl.’ I respond and I walk away, I would have loved to see the shock on her face but I am better than that.
‘Hey dad, I thought you wouldn’t make it.’ Ernest says
‘You know I have never missed anything.’ I say giving him a manly hug
Nelson and Vaughn walk in and join us, they are in matching outfits and I can almost tell that it was her idea. I feel like breaking his head, I shouldn’t but I couldn’t help it by checking the cameras in Kasweka’s office. I don’t know why I am trying to break my heart by being with her when I know she has a lot to let go off.
‘Good evening daddy.’ Vaughn says coming into my arms, I know this type of affection. It only comes when she wants something but I am a patient man and I will wait for her to drop this facade.
‘Nelson, you have been scarce.’ I say greeting him
We all chat a while before the help tells us that dinner is served, Samara has dropped the shocked act and she is now back to her usual self.
‘So what plans do you have for thirty? Are you ready to give us a grandson?’ Samara asks Moudy in the middle of dinner, I hear folks clutter.
‘Mother.’ Ernest says with disapproval
‘What? You know I am just concerned. The two of you rushed into marriage and there has been no child, I was thinking she was knocked up hence the rush but years later and your house is still quiet.’
‘We will have a child when we are ready.’ Moudy responds trying to act strong but I know she is breaking inside
‘Ready? Ernest is not getting any younger, very soon he will take over the business and he needs to start grooming his son for the business ladder. You want him to be your father Inlaw’s age by the time he starts doing that? Not everyone has his energy.’ She says before clicking her tongue
‘What do you mean not everyone has dad’s energy?’ Vaughn asks
‘Will you tell them or I should?’ Samara asks looking at me
‘Dad what is she talking about?’
I hate Samara right now for doing this, this is supposed to be about Moudy and not a time to bring out our issues.
‘It’s nothing.’
‘It’s not nothing, your father is fucking a younger woman.’
Attention shifts to me
‘Dad is that true?’ Vaughn asks and I hate that look on her face, she looks like my daughter once again. Not this monster her mother has created, she looks like that little girl I saw growing up.
‘Daddy?’
‘Yes baby it’s true, and I am not just sleeping with her. I am in love with her.’
‘How old is she?’
‘It doesn’t matter.’
‘Dad.’
‘Twenty six.’
‘You must be kidding me, your youngest child here is twenty eight.’ Samara says
‘Happy birthday Moudy.’ Vaughn says before standing up and walking out of the house quickly
‘Vaughn!’ I call out rushing towards her and I only catch up with her outside
‘What?’ She asks tears falling
‘I want you to listen.’ I begin but keep quiet instead, she is so broken it breaks my heart too.
‘Someone younger than me really?’
‘It’s not what you are thinking.’
‘Tell me what I am thinking dad, tell me.’
‘Vaughn.’
‘Is that why you left mum? So that you can be with a younger woman? Someone that will reap where she didn’t sow?’
‘What?’
‘I am not accepting her, and I hope she knows that she will be our enemy. We will fight her.’ She says before getting into the car
‘I will talk to her.’ Nelson says to me but I just stand here and watch until they have driven off.
