Chapter 1
I lift my eyes to look at the wall clock, it’s almost 7PM and the office building is quiet. It is probably just me and the janitor like always.
I started working for Maluchi Properties three years ago, I came in as an intern immediately after graduating then six months later I was a confirmed employee. I started off as an an administrative assistant but have worked my way up to be the property manager. I don’t know anyone who does my job better than I do and that is why I feel like I deserve better but I have learnt during my time here that family properties are a bit monopolistic.
A knock sounds at the door and I am forced to look up.
‘Come in.’ I say
The janitor walks in
‘Are you still here ma’am?’
‘You need to lock up?’
‘Yes I do, it’s my daughter’s sixteenth birthday and I promised her mother to be home early.’
I feel guilty but also that means my work will be bulky and that alone will upset Nelson.
‘I will be out shortly.’
‘Okay ma’am.’
I save all my documents in the necessary folders and switch off my laptop, carry everything that I need to use home and leave the office.
My phone rings just before I can drive out, it’s Nelson.
‘If it isn’t my favourite man.’ I say feeling knots in my stomach, I still get like this even after dating him for four years.
He was my senior then and I knew the minute I met him that he would be my mine, I have always set my goals so high and I knew this is one I could achieve.
‘Are you still there?’ He asks
‘Yes I am babe.’
‘We need to talk?’
‘Okay, something serious.’
There is silence on his end, and it’s in moments like this that I know that whatever it is just be serious.
‘Are you driving?’
‘No I am just getting into the car.’
‘Are you seated?’
‘What sort of a question is that? Am I supposed to be sleeping in the car?’
I am getting irritated now
‘Well I am only asking because of the gravity of what I am about to tell you.’
‘Nelson just tell me what this is about because I have had a very long day and it’s still going on.’
‘Kasweka listen to me.’
‘What Nelson? What?’ I say allowing the irritation to get the best of me.
‘We are done Sweka, we are done.’
‘I am tired, I don’t have time for these silly jokes. Just tell me what it is you wanted to tell me.’
‘I am not messing with you, I think it’s high time you and I ended things. We are not compatible any more, we don’t even like the same things any more. You are ever busy, you work day and night and that is not the life I want for my kids.’
I sigh deeply
‘Who is she?’
‘Excuse me.’
‘Don’t make me repeat myself Nelson.’
‘What do you mean who is she? You honestly think I can’t just break up with you? You think you are so perfect and I am the bad guy that I have to cheat on you in order for me to want out?’
‘Just tell me who is she and you can go on with your life.’
There is silence from his end.
‘You know what, don’t even bother telling me. You want to walk out of a relationship that has stood for years, I would rather you chose the right time and the right reasons. You won’t cheat on me and then get to be the one to walk out.’
‘Sweka I don’t want to make this harder than it already is.’
‘You know what, you are such an ass Nelson and I hope you get some STI or something.’ I say dropping the line
I have mastered the art of never showing him my weak side because he always takes advantage of that, and things haven’t exactly been perfect between us but I didn’t see him walking out on me like this.
I start the car, then turn the engine off again. This is when it hits me, my boyfriend of years has dumped me. I was hoping we move to the next stage now of our relationship, we have been looking at wedding bands together for the past months and I was sure he was going to ask me to marry him.
‘Damn you Nelson!’ I yell hitting the steering wheel with force
