Chapter 55
Chapter 55 Contraceptive Pills
There was sadness in Mr. Satan's eyes. "Once you know the whole truth, you'll understand."
"When exactly are you going to tell me all the truth?"
"When I've dealt with everything."
Back to square one.
All her questions would eventually loop back here.
It was essentially a dead end.
After Mr. Satan left, Emily went to the supermarket as usual to buy groceries for cooking.
Her mind felt empty, aimlessly pushing the shopping cart.
She felt like her rationality was still intact; she compared prices when buying things, selected items skillfully, but everything seemed to move at a slower pace, always taking a few extra seconds to react. Just like now.
The cashier reminded her softly, "Ma'am, that'll be one hundred dollars."
Emily stood there blankly for several seconds until the person behind her in line urged her, and she finally came to her senses. "Oh, okay."
She had already taken out a bank card from her wallet, but after a moment's thought, she pushed it back in and paid with cash from her wallet, then hurriedly left the supermarket.
That bank card was given to her by Mr. Satan before.
Emily found it somewhat melancholic that she seemed to have grown accustomed to having him around all the time.
She was used to paying with his card, sitting in his car always in the passenger seat, even to his indulgence and care.
She once thought she was just accompanying Mr. Satan for a while, and if his beloved woman returned, she would leave. But Mr. Satan had already ensnared her with a sweet net. Everywhere she went, there was his scent. That black hairpin was like a wake-up call, abruptly pulling her out of her sweet dreams.
On her way back to the Hilton Hotel with her shopping bags, she walked into that pharmacy again. "Please give me a box of contraceptive pills."
The pharmacist this time was different from the last one, still asking her if she wanted short-term or long-term.
Emily gritted her teeth. "Short-term, please."
The side effects of long-term contraceptive pills on the body were too significant, and taking them every day might easily be noticed by Mr. Satan.
"Here you go, this one can be taken for emergency contraception within 72 hours."
Emily nodded and took the pill box, then went to the counter to pay.
"Ma'am, we have a promotion on condoms today, very cost-effective. Would you like to buy some?"
Emily shook her head, tugging at her lips. "No, thank you. Could you please give me a glass of water?"
The clerk nodded. "Sure, just wait a moment."
After swallowing the contraceptive pill with water, Emily directly tossed the packaging into a trash can by the roadside. This time, she wouldn't foolishly bring the pills back.
Back at the hotel, she cooked dinner as usual, then went to the hospital to visit her father.
When she arrived, she saw her uncle Bert standing by the window at the end of the corridor, smoking.
"Emily, you're here."
Emily smiled and walked over. "I've brought lunch for you and Dad."
"I have something I want to talk to you about."
Bert led her to a secluded corner, looking serious.
"Is it about my father's condition?"
"The doctor said he's recovering well at the moment, but the burns are extensive. He's likely to have scars in the future, and there may be mobility issues with his joints. But that's manageable. What I wanted to tell you is that Sophia's mother might be coming back..."
"I already know about that, Sophia..."
Emily hesitated for a moment, deciding not to tell Bert about Nathan and Sophia's impending marriage for now. After a pause, she adjusted her words, "Sophia has a good job now, so her mother must be happy for her." Bert's expression darkened. "Emily, how long are you going to keep things from me?"
"...What?"
"Sophia is with Nathan, they're getting married soon. Her mother's coming back for the wedding! Emily, how long have they been together? Why didn't you tell me?"
Bert had a quick temper, and Emily hurriedly reassured him, "Lower your voice, this is a hospital."
Bert gritted his teeth, his gaze sharp. "I never liked Nathan. He's too arrogant and selfish, thinks the world revolves around him. Now he not only betrays you but also causes another girl from our family to break ties with us."
Emily sighed.
Nathan and Sophia getting together might not necessarily have been Nathan's initiative. Sophia had always been eager to marry into a wealthy family; her ambition had shown early on.
Bert was trembling with anger. "Emily, tell me, how did they get involved? I won't let you suffer!"
Emily said gently, "Uncle, I'm not suffering. Actually, the divorce from Nathan is a good thing for me. I have a new job now, and I'm living well."
Emily found it somewhat amusing. This incident had happened not long ago, yet it already felt like ancient history.
Now when she brought it up, she could do so calmly.
Bert observed her calm and
composed demeanor as she spoke, not sounding like she was lying, and gradually began to believe her. "If that's really the case, then leaving Nathan is for the best. Don't worry, you'll find someone who cherishes and spoils you."
Emily smiled faintly. She had found that person, but unfortunately, in his heart, there wasn't just one woman.
