Chapter 20
Chapter 20
Silently, Charlotte looked at Zachary with a cool gaze, almost finding amusement in the situation.
“Relax. I’ll make sure you get everything rightfully yours from this marriage,” he assured her. He was implying, of course, that she wouldn’t get anything if she split from Gordon.
With a polite smile, Charlotte retorted, “Well, isn’t Mr. Sullivan generous! What can I do to return the favor?”
Zachary was taken aback by that. Right now, in her mind, anything he offered came with strings attached. Despite her rocky past with Zachary, she held a piece of faith in him. He’d always been decent to her, treated her with respect. She’d fully trusted him as her husband and had let her guard down.
And yet, he’d still let her down.
“Charlotte, back then-”
“Do you know how much Gordon is worth?” Charlotte cut him off, not wanting to delve into old wounds. She was all about the now and getting what was rightfully hers. With a smile and a sidelong look at Zachary, she mulled over his offer. ‘Does Zachary really have any say in my affairs with Gordon?‘

Zachary’s face fell. Leaning close, he lowered his head. To avoid him, Charlotte jolted, but not before Zachary squeezed her chin. “You will get what’s yours, and the money will be transferred into your account. By afternoon, I better hear about that divorce,” he said briskly.
Ignoring any protest from Charlotte, he turned and hurried to his car. With a swift pull away, his car disappeared into the distance. Charlotte stood still with a mocking smile. ‘Same old Zachary. Always play the boss,‘ she thought.
Charlotte didn’t know when Gordon came back, but she saw him at the breakfast table in the morning.
Over a bowl of oatmeal, Gordon quizzed, “Zachary dropped by last night, didn’t he?”
“How did you know?”
He pointed to the front door. “Spotted a bunch of cigarette butts out there. Who else chain–smokes like that?”
‘Well, that is clear–cut Gordon. Always sharp–eyed and thorough. He can put two and two together and figure out it was Zachary from the cigarette butts,’ Charlotte mused.

“Yeah, he did pop around,” Charlotte admitted.
“What did he want?”
“He’s asking me to leave you without a dime to my name.”
Gordon sucked in a breath, stunned into silence. Then he chuckled, “He is quite protective of you, isn’t he?”
Charlotte’s grip on her spoon tightened. ‘Does Zachary treat me differently? I don’t get what Gordon meant.‘
Gordon shrugged off his joking façade. “Because of you, Zachary is trying to get back at me, your hubby.”
Charlotte was baffled. “Revenge? Are you serious?”
“Yup. He’s messing with a few of my business projects. I wouldn’t have guessed he’d mess things up for you,” Gordon said nonchalantly. From his casual mention of “a few projects,” Charlotte realized he must’ve taken quite the hit. What Zachary did must’ve hit him right in the wallet, too.
‘But why would he do such a thing?‘ Charlotte was confused.
