Chapter 34 Why Don’t You Be Gentle This One Time?
Hendrix actually wanted to make a deal with her? Riley looked at the numbers which kept on decreasing and said listlessly, "You're wrong, I'm not interested at all." Hendrix almost went bananas. He cupped his head with both his hands and gave a whirl. "No way! How would you not be interested? Lydia Saunders wants to steal your man, don't you want to make her feel the same way as you did?"
Riley still kept a calm expression and there was a little of a doctor's astuteness and alert in her eyes. "Mr. George, aren't you behaving too enthusiastic? Your big brother and I will solve the matter between us and you need only to mind your own business."
Hendrix did not want to give his last chance away, he seized the sleeve of her coat and reminded her in a cautious way, "Riley, Lydia Saunders is not just somebody. If you let her do as she wants now, she'll really take your place in the future. I wonder is it because you don't care about the place as the mistress of the George family, or because you don't care about my big brother?" It turned out he was not here only to make a bargain with her, but to inquire about the situation.
The door of the lift was going to open, and Riley let out a profound smile. "I believe our feelings with each other will not be affected by outsiders. If this is your main purpose, Mr. George, I'm busy, and I'll not keep you further company."
Hendrix pulled his hair and slightly let out a smile. He quickly chased after her. The nurses and doctors of the cardiology department kept on greeting her and Hendrix also grinned in return as if they were greeting him too. "Alright, alright, I do have something to ask from you. Big brother wants me to apply for universities, and I need to provide a body checkup, that's why I'm here looking for you." "Hello, Doctor Watson..."
"Good morning, Doctor Watson." Nurses lowered their heads and greeted as both of them passed by. Riley nodded as a reply and continued, "For the blood checkup part you can just let the doctor from the medical department to give you a checkup slip, the result will be out in three days."
"Aren't you a doctor from the medical department?"
Riley looked at him with impatience and said, "Alright."
"Thanks Riley!"
"Call me Doctor Watson."
"Sure, Doctor Riley."
Riley gave him a cold glare. "I'm a doctor here, I hope Mr. George could pay attention to that."
Hendrix had paid his second visit to the office. Serena and Margot gave each other a look. That handsome guy obviously had an unusual purpose! Riley typed on the keyboard and handed Hendrix the printed slip. "You need to be empty-stomached when taking blood. If you've had breakfast today, you can come again tomorrow."
"I've not had breakfast."
"Good."
Hendrix stooped and came close to her ear. "After I've finished taking blood, we should have lunch together." Riley took out a folder to look at the patient report and said gruffly, "I'm busy, it's my turn on duty this afternoon. Don't you need to leave now?"
Hendrix fiddled with the accessories on her office desk and said with a low voice, "Riley, do consider my suggestions. It's not easy to deal with Lydia Saunders." Riley sneered. “I think you're the one who's not easy to deal with. Hurry up and take your blood. The blood-taking room closes at half past eleven. If you can't make it due to the queue that's it."
Hendrix was chased away. Serena and Margot both felt a rush of grievance and annoyance. "How could you not cherish such a good-looking handsome boy? He obviously has his eyes set on you! Doctor Watson, being a cradle-snatcher is nothing, do consider about that."
"Don't you have anything to do? If you don't go finish the report of the department for the end of this month, I'm now as busy as a beaver."
"Hell no, I still have patients to look after. Damn, the handsome guy was chased away by a fierce woman. I'm feeling really depressed now!"
"We won't have chance to seduce such a perfect man like Euan George, it would be good if we have such a young, fit handsome guy! Poor kid, why are you being so foolish, won't it be so good if you get to come into my arms!" Riley pressed down the head of the ballpoint pen and wavered into her thoughts. Euan... Yes, to the outsiders, he was indeed the paradigm of a perfect man. Her smile froze, but so what? The phone which she placed on her desk suddenly vibrated and the call was made from the emergency room. "Doctor Watson, do come here quick, there's a patient needing emergency treatment." "Okay!" She let go of the mouse and rushed outside. "What's the patient's condition now?"
"Systolic pressure is 80, diastolic pressure is 40, and the pulse is 110. He's thirty years old, and has congenital heart disease. His coronary artery seems to be badly injured and he has breathing difficulty. The condition is very urgent."
"I get it."
As Riley reached downstairs and saw the patient, the patient already went into a coma and his face was cadaverous. Riley quickly opened his eyes and from the color of the white part of his eyes, the condition did not look good.
"Doctor Watson, the patient's heart's no longer beating." Upon hearing the patient no longer had his heart beating, the patient's wife suddenly burst into tears and seized Riley's clothes, crying from the rooftops "Doctor, please, you must save him! My husband is only thirty years old, he can't die now! If he's dead, I can't live too! Please! Doctor, I beg you!" The nurses all held her in a hurry and consoled her, "Please don't panic, ma'am. The doctor will try her best, please stay calm first."
"Doctor, you must save him! I'll give you all the money! I beg you!"
"Ma'am, please stay calm. You'll delay the treatment instead."
Riley locked her hands together and pressed against the center of the patient's chest. "The patient's coronary artery needs stents; it's likely that the three coronary arteries have problems. I need a defibrillator!" She then clamped her hands on the defibrillator and stared at the patient's face. "Give me 200 joules." The patient was detached from the stretcher due to the powerful attraction and he fell back hard again. There was still no sign of heartbeat from the screen.
"200 joules again!" The patient's body bounced once again. "Doctor Watson, the patient's heart is beating again, the heartbeat has dropped, Doctor Watson!"
"Contact the surgeons, this patient needs operation." Riley ran and followed the stretcher all the way to the operation room. She then stopped. After a while, the surgeon team who was responsible to do surgery all rushed there and the leading surgeon criticized the nurse held responsible coldly, "Why don't you contact us directly?"
The nurse did not dare to speak due to the criticism. Riley took one step forward and explained in a composed manner, "The patient has heart disease, he used to receive traditional medicinal treatment from the cardiology department, but his condition has worsened now and he needs to have a surgery. I've done a checkup just now, he needs stents for the coronary arteries."
"You can leave the rest to us, thank you Doctor Watson."
Riley nodded. Seeing the door of the operation door closed, she then puffed hard while holding her knees. The white bandage was drenched with blood once more. Having repeated this all over again, she became worried that the wound would leave ugly scar just like what William said.
"Doctor, you have to save my husband, we've only gotten married for three years, and I've just gotten pregnant. The child and I can't lose him...!" Riley's attention was attracted by the patient's family member's cries. She turned and saw the woman who was standing outside the operation room. She was covering her abdomen while holding the glass door of the operation room. Her legs trembled due to lack of energy.
"Ma'am, do sit down and have a rest. Your husband's condition is not that bad, the doctors would save him, don't worry." Riley held the pregnant woman and let her sat on the chair. The woman's face was pale and her eyes had gone red due to crying too much. She grabbed Riley as if she was her last hope and said, "Doctor, thank you, thank you! I thank you on behalf of my child!"
Child? She looked at her tummy gently. The child's age was still too young and she could not see her tummy bulging. "How old is the child?" Having mentioned the child, there was finally a warm look on the woman's face. "It's only two months old... We've gotten married for three years, and I've finally gotten pregnant, but I never expect that..." She cried.
Riley put her hand behind her, she froze and finally caressed her back gently. She consoled, "It's alright, trust the doctors. You have to take good care of the child and you can't be too emotional. Let's wait for the child's dad to come out, okay?"
"Okay...I'll listen to you. I'll not be emotional or nervous. My baby, let's wait for daddy to come out."
Seeing her finally calmed down a bit, Riley took a cup of warm water and gave it to her. "The operation takes a very long time, you shouldn't keep on staying here. Do let other family members come here and take your place instead."
The woman held the paper cup and shook her head. "Both my husband and I are not from here. We've only bought a house after working hard in JD City for so many years, and our family is not here...It's okay, I'll just stay here." She looked up and stared at Riley. There was gratitude and happiness in her eyes.
Having thought of something, she spoke with difficulty and her voice trembled, "Doctor... How much would it cost for stents placement?" Riley thought for a while. A lot of money would be needed after including the stents, medical fee and the hospital admission fee.
She said a number after some estimation. The woman pulled down her face after hearing that, but she immediately nodded with determination. “As long as my husband could recover, I won't mind selling our house."
Riley's fingertips slightly trembled. There were many married couples like them who worked hard together after graduating. They earned money together for the down payment and did not dare to have children because they did not have savings.
To them, the house was all they had. In order to save her husband, and for the sake of her child, the power possessed by the fragile woman was impressive. "We've done millions of this kind of operation, it would be a success, you don't need to worry. Your husband would overcome that, seeing you being so tough."
The woman wiped the tears on her face away and heaved a sigh of relief. "Doctor, you're really a nice person. If you've gotten married, you must be a good wife too." Riley smiled. "I hope so. Do have a rest here; I'll go mind my business."
After leaving the corridor and walked pass a corner, she finally exhaled. Compared to those who had tried hard and struggled to live, she and Euan were many times luckier. Should she really try to learn being a true wife? No matter whether he appreciated or accepted it or not? She sat on the bench and took out her phone with thoughts. Her finger hovered above Euan's number. It was already noon; he should already have his meal.
Yet that seemed too deliberate if she asked whether he had had his lunch or not, she could not do it. What if...she talked about Lydia's pregnancy checkup? Would that be a good excuse? She pondered and pulled her hair. He had not even acknowledged her existence these three years, why should she care so much about him like that? She had disdained the action of flattering someone who was uninterested in herself.
Should she call him or not? Her finger hesitated. Yet the screen of the phone was too sensitive and she had tapped the number by accident. Damn! She had to hang up now! However, the call had gotten through in a split second!00000☐☐☐
