Chapter 30
Chapter 30: I’m So Idle
Julia was slightly taken aback, getting a meal card wasn’t a big deal, but Future Better Technology Company’s administrative director was known for being thrifty. It wouldn’t be a problem for him to get an external employee card, but getting two might require a bit of effort. He was hesitant in his heart, but he readily agreed on the surface.
The employee cafeteria had a dining area exclusively for Penn, and his meals were personally prepared by the chef. However, Penn was down- to–earth and usually just ate whatever was available when he was busy with work, rarely ordering dishes.
But today was different. At noon, he actually ordered a few dishes with a good mix of meat and vegetables.
“How did Mr. Humphery know our tastes? The dishes he ordered are all ones that Serena and I love,” Blair exclaimed. She was a friendly person and was a little nervous when she first met Penn, but after two meetings, she felt that Penn was not easy to get along with, but they were able to communicate naturally.
Penn didn’t answer, he just boiled the dishes and utensils with hot water, and then naturally placed them in front of Serena, who handed them over to Blair beside her.
Julia smiled meaningfully and opened the topic for small talk. “Are Blair and Lawyer Woodsen both graduates of NYU? If that’s the case, they’re like my half–juniors. I was an exchange student at NYU for a year. They say NYU has many beauties, so you two should be goddess- level, right?”
Serena just politely smiled, while Blair opened her mouth and said, “That’s true. Especially my sister Serena. She must have captivated countless senior and junior students when she was at NYU, but unfortunately, they were all mistaken about her feelings because my sister Serena is just an emotionless study machine, naturally dull.”
Julia was very interested and asked, “Really?”
“Really. The funniest thing is, when we were sophomores, a senior student would reserve a seat for her in the library every day and buy her hot drinks, and he did it for an entire year. Before he graduated, he finally mustered up the courage to confess to her. Guess what she said?”
“What did she say?” Julia asked, while Penn also looked at her, waiting for the answer.
“She said, ‘Who are you?“” Although many years had passed, Blair would burst into laughter every time she recalled Serena’s perplexed expression at the time and the senior’s disgusted look after drinking his love potion.
He had reserved a seat for her for a whole year, bought her hot drinks for a year, and she didn’t even remember who he was?
Outsiders think she’s a green tea or a white lotus, pretending to be stupid and taking advantage of boys. Only Blair understands her. She is really indifferent to this aspect, which is maddening, or maybe she simply has no interest in romantic relationships.
Later, after learning about the whole story, she sincerely apologised to the boys and insisted on returning the money she had received for hot drinks that year. She was so straightforward that the boys couldn’t even bring themselves to hate her.
“Things like this happened too often, and as time went by, no boy
pursued her anymore. She’s been single ever since. It’s a shame, I don’t know which man will benefit from her in the future,” Blair said,
hugging Serena with a hint of tenderness.
Julia laughed and said, “It’s okay, you’re Lawyer Woodsen’s best friend. In the future, let Mr. Humphery introduce some more boys to Lawyer Woodsen. All the young talents around Mr. Humphery.”
“Do I look so free?” Blair immediately understood what she meant and said, “Then let me thank Mr. Humphery on behalf of Serena.”
Penn restrained the faint smile on his face and said seriously, “Do I look so free? Let’s finish eating and go back to work.”
The atmosphere suddenly became tense. It was just a joke from Julia, but he took it seriously. Serena was used to his unpredictable moods. As for Blair’s habit of always bringing up embarrassing things about her for fun, she rolled her eyes at her in her heart, but still cooperated with her performance.
The cafeteria chef quickly brought the dishes that Penn had ordered. Blair was careful not to eat too much to maintain her figure, so she took care of Serena the whole time, afraid that Serena would feel uncomfortable in front of Penn and Julia and couldn’t eat.
Serena was really hungry because she hadn’t eaten breakfast in the morning, so she enjoyed Blair’s care. This was their way of getting along. Blair had many friends, and she used to take Serena to dinners with her, taking care of her like she was her own child, pouring water and serving food.
Julia sighed, “Your relationship is really good, it’s rare.”
“Of course, we’re even closer than real sisters.”
As it was the lunch rush at the company cafeteria, and even though they had their own private space. Penn’s powerful aura and his first- time dining with the two girls, one of whom was Blair, rumoured to be close with everyone, made them the centre of attention. Many
employees looked over with curiosity.
Blair was a wild child and the more attention she received, the better she performed. She was also good at using misunderstandings to her advantage, especially since she had been rumoured to have a romantic relationship with Penn. She was the one who benefited from it.
Penn, on the other hand, seemed to be in a good mood as he listened to Blair’s words with a gentle expression.
After the meal, the four of them stood up and walked out of the employee cafeteria. There was a small step at the door, and Serena was careless, almost tripping over. Penn reached out and grabbed her arm.
“Be careful, Lawyer Woodsen,” he said calmly, tightening his grip slightly to help her regain her balance.
“Thank you,” Serena said awkwardly. To her horror, she noticed that some of her foundation had smeared onto his shoulder, which was especially noticeable against his black clothing. She thought about patting it off, but held back. Fortunately, Penn didn’t seem to mind, released his grip, and left with Julia.
Blair watched his back and sighed, “What a pity. Such a good man, but I dare not imagine him.”
Penn was indeed a good man, with wealth and good looks, and a calm and mature demeanour. Even though he had had an intimate relationship with Serena, there was never any flirtatious language or
actions.
In the afternoon, Emma organised a merger and acquisition meeting for
the Future Better Technology Company, discussing the progress of the project, which was not going smoothly. No one could guess Penn’s true thoughts, and it was uncertain which law firm he would ultimately choose to work with.
“Penn’s contact with domestic law firms is likely just a smokescreen. He doesn’t believe in the capabilities of domestic law firms,” Charlie felt that this man was inscrutable. Even though Emma had just won a case for him.
Emma replied, “This possibility cannot be ruled out, but don’t forget that the Hands–free Intelligent Technology Company he wants to acquire is a state–owned enterprise, and many of the country’s policies will favour local law firms. If he doesn’t want to work with local law firms, I don’t think he’ll waste time wrangling.”
“Serena, I heard you went to Future Better Technology Company today and had lunch with Mr. Humphrey and Julia?”
