Chapter 27. A coffee
When we arrived on the pack land, Ela asked me to talk about the matter left unresolved at the boutique.
“Myra, I wanted to talk to you about my proposal, in private.”
Before answering I looked at Nathan for confirmation, even if it wasn’t necessary, because I knew he was just as curious as I was about what it was.
“Only if I am there too”; Nathan answered, looking into Ela’s eyes to study her reaction.
“Agree!” Ela said with a cold smile.
“Can I offer you a coffee at my house?” I asked her, taking the envelope with my dress in it.
“We actually, vampires, don’t drink coffee!”
“Okay, then I’m not going to offer you a coffee, but I’m afraid I don’t have what Vampires like.” Ela burst into laughter.
“I was kidding, I’m sure I can digest a coffee.”
We talked about this and that along the street, until we got to our loft.
While I was making coffee, Nathan went to change and Ela was looking around.
“You have a very welcoming place!” Ela said as she approached the stove where I was struggling with coffee.
“Very small you mean. It’s a gift from my parents.”
“There are two of you, I think this is a perfect size.”
“Yes it’s perfect!” I said with a dreamy smile. That was mine, our love nest, the most perfect thing that existed in the world.
Ela took her place in the armchair, in the meantime Nathan joined her and finally I arrived with the tray of coffee.
“Myra, I am an original vampire, this has many meanings, many facets, among which transformation. I have transformed many humans into vampires. Never on my part, you see, my maternal grandmother was an original vampire, who had more than five hundred centuries. She had grown up in a strict family, where women had no rights, her life was working in the fields with her family, then one day a landowner wanted to marry her. Her parents could do nothing but accept that even though she was still a minor, he was only 16 years old. After the marriage he took her virginity with force and every time he took it she died little by little. Until one day he came home and was angry with no one knows who and who knows why. He beat her to feel better, beat her so hard they thought she was dead and put her in a sack in the garden. It was too late to dig a hole for her body. Luckily for her she passed Gerom, he was an original vampire and my grandmother was in a coma, so her heart was beating very slowly so that humans could not perceive her heartbeat. He turned her into an original vampire. Gerom was the vampire who taught my grandmother some tricks, how to fead, and other things. But he was a restless type, irascible so a trifle made him snap. Once he found himself in a fight but he did not win, he saw him as the protagonist of his own death. My grandmother was left alone, but not for too long. Over the centuries she had lived through tragedies, wars, plagues, great loves including my grandfather. Sorry I’ve bored you, maybe? ”
“Bored is not the word I would have used. Your grandmother’s life is quite interesting, to tell the truth. Who knows how many stories she will have told you!” I told her, placing the empty coffee cup on the tray.
“Every day she told me a new one, sometimes even more than one.”
“I’m sure you could write a whole series of books!”
“Yeah, that’s right. What I’ve been trying to tell you is that my grandmother ever since she met my grandfather has always helped transform only those who wanted to. So my proposal is this: Do you want me to turn you into a Vampire?” Becoming a vampire? I had never thought about this possibility. There were so many pros and cons in my head that they elbowed each other.
“It’s a solution I hadn’t thought of”; Nathan said, anticipating my answer, almost reading what my first thought had been.
“I have to admit it’s a tempting proposition but ...”
“Myra, you don’t have to tell me now, you have plenty of time to think about the pros and cons of my offer. I’m not going anywhere, I’ve come to stay. My offer doesn’t have an expiration date. I don’t usually make these proposals to people I don’t know, that is, it hasn’t even been 24 hours since we met. I don’t know how to explain it, but when you hugged me this morning it felt like ... ”
“You felt like we were linked by a family bond?”
“Exactly, which seems absurd to me!”
“Surely there is an explanation that escapes us”; Nathan said thoughtfully.
“Thanks for your proposal, Ela”; I said without adding anything other than a simple smile.
We kept talking about lighter, funnier stories and finally, it was time for Ela to leave.
During dinner Nathan took Ela’s speech again.
“I think you should give Ela’s proposal a chance.” The tone of his voice and the way this phrase came out of his mouth sounded like he was sure I wasn’t going to give her any hope.
“I will, I promise.”
“We will do it together, if you allow me I would like to help you!”
“I’ll make a list with the pros and cons and we’ll discuss it together later.”
“It seems to me that it is a reasonable compromise.”
I was hoping that having sex with Nathan that night, several times, would have consumed all my energy, leaving me sleeping like a log, but unfortunately it didn’t. The pros and cons kept jumping all over the place without letting my mind rest.
It was three o’clock when I decided to get out of bed, grab a pen and paper and put down those damned thoughts that wouldn’t let me sleep in peace.
When I opened my eyes it was already morning. I was sure of it because the room was full of light.
“Good morning, Little Bird!” Nathan said, kissing me.
“Good morning, my love. How do I ...” I don’t remember being back in bed, I remember I was writing and then ...
“You were asleep with your head on the paper. I couldn’t leave you there. You would have stood up with a stiff neck or worse you could have fallen off your chair.”
“Are you sure it was for that?” I asked mischievously.
“Of course not, there is the selfish side of me that always wants you around. I want you in my bed, my arms yearn for you, I need your warm body under mine, your unique and delicious scent that makes my mouth watering.”
“Now, yes, I recognize you!” Nathan wasted not a single second in reclaiming my lips and immediately after my entire body.
On Saturday there was no school so we spent the day at home alone. At lunch my mother had something ready for us.
“What have you prepared today?” Nathan asked Giulia who brought us lunch every Saturday.
“Baked chicken and potatoes with a side of salad”
“It smells good, thanks Giulia!”
“Not at all, good appetite!” He replied with her sweet smile as he walked away soon after.
When we finished lunch, Nathan carried me to bed in his arms. It had become routine for him to carry me up and down the loft in his arms.
“Have you completed the list yet?”
“Do you know what? While I was writing this night I realized that it is useless to do it because I am already oriented on my answer.”
“That would be?”
“That would be, don’t accept the offer!”
“Myra ...”
“Nathan, Ela’s offer may seem dazzling, but I don’t want to accept it.”
“You’ll be alive.” He said in a pained tone.
“I’ll be a vampire.”
“But you will be alive.” He said repeating his previous sentence.
“But at what price? Have you wondered what it will be like?” He was silent, maybe he hadn’t done it or he didn’t want to say his answer because it was painful.
“Let’s say I ask Ela to transform me into a Vampire. The transformation process implies that I have to die and be reborn as a Vampire, right?” He just nodded his head, maybe he was guessing where my speech was going.
“If I die our Mate bond will break.”
“But still, you will be alive ...”
“I will be a vampire, my perfume will die with me, the vampire perfume will be like a rotting dead to you.” He was trying to hide the grimace of disgust that caused him to think of the stench of vampires.
“I’ll be alive, right ... What if you find your second Mate? Are you really sure you’ll stay with me, knowing what you’ll give up?” He said nothing but shook his head.
“I’ll be alive, it’s true ... but at what price?”
“Myra… everything you said makes sense, but I’d rather see you alive and as a vampire than dead. The decision is yours. I hope you want to think about it again. As Ela told you, you have plenty of time to think about it.” He hugged me tightly in his arms and I lost myself in his scent and the reassuring beating of his heart.
If I became a vampire many things would be different, I would be immortal so I would remain an eighteen year old for eternity, while he would grow old, only to die. True, werewolves live longer than humans, but they are not immortal beings. Our relationship would radically change in all aspects.
I didn’t want to live a life where Nathan wasn’t part of my life.
