Chapter 26. Ela
Cohabitation as a husband and wife was going well, most of the time. Very often I felt like a burden to Nathan, despite the fact that he had never said or done anything to make me feel like a burden. Sometimes it was nausea, sometimes it was sight, sometimes headache, sometimes dizziness or worse fainting.
Flash back
One day I was angry with Nathan about a nonsense, perhaps it was the fault of the tumor, for my sudden changes of mood. The shed, being a loft, had nowhere to close the door and be alone without Nathan entering. The only place was the bathroom. I entered, locked the door with the key and was finally alone. I was lying in the bathtub, Nathan was asking me to open the door, but I was so angry that I sent him away.
The headache appeared and for a while I tried to fight it, but when it started to be unmanageable, I decided to take a tablet. Luckily for me the medicines were in a small cabinet in the bathroom. I got up from the tub and went to get the tablet. Immediately after swallowing it, I began to feel dizzy and knew I would soon pass out. I wanted to reach the door to open it, I wanted to call Nathan, but I managed to do nothing of everything I wanted to do, I fell to the ground hearing nothing but seeing total darkness.
When I managed to open my eyes again, I was lying on my bed alone, I put my hand on my forehead and then on the back of my neck.
“You’ll get a nice bump!”
“Nathan, you scared me! ” I said, putting a hand on my chest in fright.
“Never as much as you scared me!”
“Sorry, I couldn’t open the door or call you in time.”
“Never lock the door again.” Nathan said with a snarl between gritted teeth.
“I won’t ...” Nathan got up from the chair in the corner where he was sitting, to reach the side of the bed where I was lying. I sat up leaning my back against the head of the bed.
“Myra, you scared the shit out of me ... if it happens again, because it could be arguing, if you need some alone time just say it. I’m going for a walk in the woods, but please don’t lock the door anymore. ”
End of flash back
“Good morning Myra, Nathan.” Rosalinda greeted us. In the last period I had taken advantage of her help, sometimes more than necessary, but my condition was advancing and it would never regress. It sucked in a lot of my energy, but I was going to have this party like it was the last thing I did. Maybe it really was!
“I want to introduce you, my cousin Ela. She is an original vampire, she is from Transylvania. Her maternal grandmother died leaving her alone in the world, so she is here to be with us.”
“Pleased to meet you Ela!” I said holding out my hand to say hello but she didn’t take it.
“My pleasure, I’m sorry but being among mixed supernatural beings is a new thing for me. You are ...“, she sniffed the air and immediately after she added: “you are human.”
“Yes, I’m human, daughter of Alphas. Have you ever been to a mixed school?”
“No. I’ve been to human schools. It was a long time ago.”
“How old are you?” I wondered why vampires were eternal, they only died when they were killed. Despite her young age, she could hide a few centuries of life in her wallet.
“I’ve been 18 for ... ninety-nine years now”; she said with a grin.
“Are you close to celebrating your first century?!” Her face went suddenly sad, was that my question? It was evident that something had upset her.
“Excuse me, is that ... My grandmother always said that. She would have liked to celebrate my birthday in a particular way, but then...“; a tear fell on her face, I could not stand and watch and I asked her: “Can I hug you?” She looked at me for a moment without any emotion and then with a half smile nodded her head.
I don’t know why but when I hugged her I felt like she was part of the family, like my sister. At that moment I knew I wasn’t going to make her feel alone even for a second.
“This afternoon, my friends and I will go in search of a dress for the prom party and I would like to invite you to join us.”
“I don’t know if that’s a good idea, Myra.” Rosalinda said, tightening her ponytail.
“Why do you think this is not a good idea?”
“Because she is an original vampire, you are human, your friends are other supernatural species, so there are many, many, many things that could go wrong.”
“Why don’t you come with us too? It’ll be fun and if something happens, you’re there to calm her down.” Rosalinda turned to her cousin, looked at her for a while and then she said: “Okay, let’s go with you!”
“Yeah”; I hugged Ela once more and went to class with Nathan for the history lesson.
At lunch I introduced Ela to the girls and they were very excited to meet her. Although she had never been this close to other supernatural ones, she was doing great.
When the end of class bell rang, I was very excited. Going shopping with my friends always puts me in a good mood.
They were all gathered in front of the school exit. Andrea had contacted my father with the mental link, who in turn had organized the transport and escort of bodyguards.
“Andrea ...” I told her with a reproachful tone.
“Excuse me but your father is my Alpha, I have to obey his orders. He said that with the attack of the rogues, your protection is increased.”
“He’s right, Little Bird. We haven’t found out who planned that attack yet. You’re under guard until the next order.”
“Okay. If we’re all ready we can go.”
“Let’s go have fun! Abby said in a festive tone.
We got into two SUVs and left for the city, where the mall was located.
Walter, Nathan and the other two guards had divided the boundaries, around me, they were discreet as usual. I didn’t feel their presence as invasive or overwhelming, but I felt protected and free to have fun with my friends.
“From the beginning of the tunnel up to here I have not found anything that caught my attention.” Ela said as Abby turned to look at her.
“Because we haven’t arrived at our favorite boutique yet. You’ll see that you will find what you are looking for.”
“We’re almost there. For Myra’s birthday, for her wedding, we’ve always found the perfect dress.” Aurora said with a sweet smile, remembering those moments lived together.
After a while they arrived at the boutique and the saleswoman greeted them warmly, she had almost become their friend.
“Good afternoon girls, for what occasion are you here today?”
“For the prom party!” Andrea said, looking around.
“At the moment they haven’t delivered spring dresses yet, they will after the sale at the beginning of the year.”
“We are planning the prom party in advance. We will do it on New Year’s Eve.” Rosalinda said, looking at me involuntarily. Perhaps she hadn’t noticed that I had seen her when she had looked at me; there was a mirror that hadn’t made me miss the scene and even if it hadn’t been there, I would still have felt her gaze on me.
“Then in this case I can help you!”
While we were following the saleswoman inside the boutique, Ela approached me and in a low tone of voice said to me: “Myra, Rosalinda told me about your illness. I would like to propose something to avoid ...”
“Here you are girls! This is the collection we bought for the New Year’s Eve party. I’m sure you will find what you are looking for.” The saleswoman interrupted Ela’s speech, which surely would have found some time to do so after the shopping.
I was standing in front of the mirror in the most beautiful dress I’ve ever worn. It was a fiery red satin dress, one-shoulder fitted, above the knee. It made me look sexy, even though the illness had made me lose weight a lot lately. I heard a whistle of appreciation behind me, I turned and saw Andrea with a grin.
“You are a sexy thing, Baby!”
“Do you really think that?”
“Sure honey, why do I hear insecurity in your voice?”
“It’s this monster that’s sucking everything up from me, look how I’ve become.”
“I see you, Myra. You look as beautiful as ever in my eyes.”
“Andrea ... I love you.”
“I love you too much.” We embrace with tears in our eyes.
“And me, can I have a hug too?” Abby asked as she came out of the dressing room, followed by Aurora. I motioned for them to come over for our group hug. In the meantime, I noticed that Rosalinda and Ela had gone out, so I invited them to come closer and join our embrace.
The stronger and greater the embrace was, the greater was the joy and peace that I felt in my heart.
We came out of the boutique all victorious, we had found exactly what we were looking for.
All I could think about at that moment, however, was: what did Ela want to propose to me?
